91 points James Suckling: "Aromas of cranberries and hints of lemon follow through to medium body. Clean and easy with a fresh finish. Drink now. Screw cap." (04/2019) K&L Notes: From the importer: "William Cole Vineyards lies deep within Chile’s prestigious Casablanca Valley—often called 'Chile’s Burgundy.' This cool climate vineyard near the coast, which is comprised of over 129 contiguous hectares, provides a long, warm growing season with cool nights to develop excellent acidity. Owned by the Martin Weinstein family, the winery specializes in cool ...

Wine Enthusiast: "Light, featuring juicy peach and kumquat flavors that finish with lemon-lime notes and herbal flourishes. (KM)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: From one of our most consistently under the radar producers of varietal wine in Chile, this Pinot Gris is delicious: brightly fruited yet with some textural weight, it most resembles Williamette Valley Pinot Gris in style. Very much worth a try to enjoy as an aperitif or with a pan-seared fillet of salmon and sauteed greens with garlic.

Located in the Guarilihue district of Chile's Itata Valley, Rogue Vines is one of the relatively recent producers to make expressive, organically farmed, minimal intervention wine. Cinsualt is abundant around these parts, and oftentimes dates back to the 1940s so they are nicely mature. *Natural Wine*

95 points Decanter: "Decanter Gold Medal Winner 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards, 50% Carmenère, 25% Carignan, 25% País Tasting notes: Heady and lifted with layers of wild strawberry and inviting cherry, while the palate is laced with beautiful crunchy fruit and super silky tannins." (05/2019) K&L Notes: A blend of 50% Carmenere, 25% Carignan and 25% Pais

Neal Martin writes: "Vina Koyle is one of best-known wineries in Colchagua Valley. It was founded in 2006 by Alfonso Undurraga Mackenna along with his three sons when they acquired 1,100 hectares in Los Lingues, located in the foothills of the Andes."

At Calcu, they are convinced that the next big thing in Chile is Cabernet Franc. God bless 'em if they think that Cabernet Franc will ever explode in popularity the way that Argentine Malbec recently has, or that Pinot Noir has in the past decade. Nonetheless, we love Cabernet Franc, and this one shows great varietal character with some unexpected richness as well. Calcu was one of the first Chilean wineries to obtain the Wines of Chile sustainability certification.

Rafael Tirado owns one of Chile's truly original properties in the tiny, high elevation section of Maule Valley called Colbún. Some of the vines are literally planted in a "laberinto" (labrynth) formation, which in Rafael's words would force him and anyone else working the vineyard to slow down and think! Grown in volcanic soil, this Sauvignon Blanc trends toward a Loire Valley style: salty minerality, lively citrus flavors and lees-driven mouthfeel that only the world's best Sauvignon Blanc brings to the table, like Dagueneau, Edmond Vatan...in other wo...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Truquilemu Vineyard reveals the wild and somewhat rustic character of the Carignan—a little earthy, with a touch of smoked meat. It's very tasty and has the granite texture on the palate. This year they started using some stems in the vinification, an innovation that continued in 2016. 5,230 bottles were filled in November 2016, as they always like to age their single-vineyard reds for two winters before they are bottled. (LG)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: Derek Mossman is up to some truly interesting things o...

2017 Apaltagua "Envero" Carménère Gran Reserva Colchagua Valley
Back In Stock!
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Gran Reserva Envero is mostly Carménère with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Apalta. It matured in French and American oak barrels for ten to 12 months. It has an herbal, spicy and balsamic nose with a soapy touch. The palate is soft and polished, with moderate acidity. (LG)" (04/2017)
Price: $14.99

James Suckling: "Plenty of fresh apple and lemon aromas, but the tannins at the finish take a bit away from its charm. Drink now. " (03/2018) Wine Spectator: "A fresh and minerally version, with well-knit flavors of green apple, ripe citrus and lemongrass. Crisp acidity lingers alongside hints of verbena on the finish. (KM, Web only-2017)" K&L Notes: A leading producer of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in Chile's coastal Casablanca Valley, Matetic has once again produced a tasty, textbook Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose, bright citrus and stone fruits c...

2016 Arboleda Carménère Aconcagua Valley
New!
The 2015-2016 season started with a dry winter. The winter rains began in mid-July and total precipitation for the season was 9% higher than the historical average. Budbreak and flowering, however, both occurred within the historical averages. The summer temperatures were higher than normal in January and February, resulting in ideal conditions for ripening. This Carmenere reached its harvest date during the last fortnight of April and produced wines with soft yet complex tannins and a long, elegant finish. This bright garnet-red Carmenere presents a pl...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Cerro Basalto Cuartel G2 is a new red blend from the plot they call G2 in their basalt hill, where 2.6 hectares are planted with high-density Carmenere and Cabernet Franc, a blend that I started to see this time. It had an élevage of 18 months in 225-liter French oak barrels and has 13.6% alcohol. 2016 is a cooler year, and they harvested the grapes quite early. The majority here is Carmenere, but there are no green aromas. Instead, it's spicy and peppery and has the elegance I find in some of my favorit...

93 points James Suckling: "A perfumed and pretty wine with medium body, firm and silky tannins. A blend of carmenere, syrah, cabernet franc and petit verdot. Lovely now to drink." (05/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red blend 2012 Lien was 44% Cabernet Franc, 40% Syrah, 10% Carménère and 6% Petit Verdot with 13.5% alcohol and aged in French oak barrels for two years. This is a good example of how they can keep the poise, balance and elegance (and moderate alcohol level) in a vintage like 2012. It has a mix of aromatic herbs, spices ...

Wine Enthusiast: "Damp, earthy berry aromas come with a note of orange peel. On the palate, this is aggressive at first, then it goes heavy and syrupy. Black cherry and berry flavors are not distinguished, while this is drilling on a finish with cherry Lifesaver notes. Tasted twice; this note is based on the better of two samples. (MS)" (07/2019)

Produced from old vine Semillon in the Itata Valley, from the prized Guarilihue district in particular, this is a waxy, richly textured, slightly savory and delicious white with loads of personality. Derek Mossman is up to some truly interesting things on the Chilean wine scene. Whether it's dry farmed Maule Pais, old vine Cinsault, Maipo Cabernet, or a singular Carignan, the man is making very interesting wines and raising the qualitative bar. He focuses on terroir and maximum fruit expression with his wines. By identifying some of Chile's most interesting vineyards (and working very minimally in the cellar to allow the fruit to shine), Garage Wine Company is producing some great examples of authentic vino Chileno.

Bright, crisp, dry Pedro Ximenez (yes, they do grow this grape perhaps best known for sweet Sherry in other regions and countries as well!), the Mayu comes from Chile's Elqui Valley, an area known for great soil complexity, with calcareous and granitic elements.

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Ribera del Notro Blanco has a higher percentage of Moscatel in the blend than the initial 2016 vintage, because this year he used part of the Sémillon to bottle separately. It shows more Moscatel character but has good complexity, as some of the Moscatel developed flor and the Corinto fermented with the skins. The complexity is more evident on the palate, which has good depth, tasty flavors and a long finish, with a lot more than a pure Moscatel. (LG)" (10/2018)

2017 Errazuriz "Las Pizarras" Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa
New!
97-98 points James Suckling: "A white with a beautiful center palate of fresh apple, pie crust, cream and hints of lemon. Medium-to-full body, with a wonderful density and tension. Restrained power. Driven finish. Mineral and stone in the aftertaste. Drink or hold on release." (03/2018) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Chardonnay is really fascinating, and it's even sharper, more restrained and with higher acidity than the 2016 that I tasted next to it. Winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig is really push...

Produced from primarily old vine Cabernet Sauvignon (planted in 1970, some of the oldest in Maipo) as well as Cab Franc, this bottling is always one of Chile's finest, and very reasonable priced for the quality, consistency and ageability.

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of tar, dried strawberries and some fresh herbs follow through a medium body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy finish. Drink now." (03/2018) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the slightly more expressive nose is compositionally similar to the Alazan but with more obvious floral components. The very round and pliant lighter-weight flavors are utterly delicious while offering good if not special persistence and depth on the dusty but not really drying finale. This should drink well almost immediately." (10/2017) Wine ...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Cota 500 is pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Cachapoal from a warm year that saw an early harvest of the alluvial vineyards. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in used French barrels for 11 months. The wine is 13.7% alcohol, and it seems to have some more acidity than the previous year I tasted. It feels very fruit-driven, with the oak perfectly integrated with the fruit, and it has classical notes of graphite. There is a stony sensation on the palate that is more a texture than a flavor. 24,000...

2017 Arboleda Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa
New!
Founded in 1999 by Eduardo Chadwick, Arboleda's focus is not only on producing great wine, but also preserving the biodiversity of their beautiful property. The Aconcagua Costa area, just north of Chile's Casablanca Valley, has seen a real rise in interest amongst growers, producers and others in the trade in Chile, for good reason. Here, there is a cool coastal influence, a diverse array of slate and granite soils, and seemingly limitless potential for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

94 points James Suckling: "Blackberry and blueberry with rose petal and dark herb aromas. Full-bodied, dense and fruity. Long and intense finish. Drink or hold." (05/2017) K&L Notes: The Bayo Oscuro is a matter of lot selection and blending. All of the Syrah comes from a fairly small geographical area—planted only on the highest slopes, in decomposed granite with northwestern exposures to capture as much sun as possible. Syrah ripens late in our vineyard and we need every advantage in order to get the grapes ripe, particularly in the colder vintages. A...

100 points James Suckling: "The aromas of blackberry leaves and iodine are wild and exotic here with mussel shells and earth underneath. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with powerful tannins that show muscle. It’s structured and powerful. Dense and very, very deep. Don’t touch this until 2025." (08/2019)

100 points James Suckling: "There is a subtle complexity on the nose with currant, berry, fresh herb and wet earth aromas. Cut fresh flowers, too. Full body, dense and powerful. Incredible character here with such purity and polish. It goes on for minutes. Formed, sculptured yet soulful. A monumental wine for Chile. Unbelievable. More powerful than the 2014 which was 100 points. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2022." (11/2018) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Despite the warm and dry character of the year, I find the 2015 Clos...

From the producer: "Escarlata is a joint project between the Calcu winery and Global Vineyard Importers. It is a red blend produced from 100% estate fruit in the Colchagua Valley. 98 points James Suckling: "Aromas are lifted and bright in this wine with loads of blackberries and blueberries. Full body, velvety tannins. Gorgeous texture. Very pure fruit. A bright and more fundamental Seña than last vintages. Restrained at the end. 55% cabernet, 20% malbec, 12% petit verdot, 8% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc. September 2018 release. Needs three or four years of bottle age." (03/2018) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The truly excellent 2016 Seña could very well be the finest wine produced at this estate that started as a jo...

99 points James Suckling: "The aromas of blackberries, cedar, sandalwood and black tea are compelling. Black olives. Rosemary and sage undertones. Full-bodied, rich and powerful Seña with impressive and powerful tannins, yet harmony and balance. Fruit-forward. Lightly chewy. Fresh and energetic wine in a hot year. Broad-shouldered." (08/2019) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "They explained how the 2017 Seña was produced with "grapes that were handpicked in the morning and transported to the winery in 12-kilogram boxes for a careful inspection ...

The second largest owner of organic vineyards in Chile, with 740 acres in production, De Martino is stepping up to the plate in other ways as well: the winery is 100% carbon neutral and beginning in 2011 they have stopped purchasing new oak barrels. That year they purchased 140 tinajas, the traditional Chilean clay vessels that resemble amphorae, in varying shapes and sizes. They also invested in 5000L Austrian (Stockinger) foudres and continue to seek out Chilean foudres made from the indigenous oak known locally as "raulí." Though their Maipo Valley "c...

Concepción native Roberto Henriquez is one of the leaders in the small, but growing, insurgency of southern Chilean winemakers making bright, very low alcohol, minimal intervention wines from indigenous grape varieties in areas such as Itata, Maule, what is occasionally referred to as the Secano Interior and Bio Bio. This particular bottling contains fruit from 200 year-old (you read correctly, 200!) Pais vines. *Natural Wine*

The Migrante is a uniquely South American blend, 70% Malbec and 30% Pinot Noir, produced from a single 0.9-hectare vineyard and vinified with native yeasts. Aged for 10 to 11 months in concrete before bottling, the wine displays deep black fruit and herbal notes typical of Malbec with a lithe, supple structure thanks to the Pinot Noir component of the blend. It's truly a style of wine that is made nowhere else but in South America. From the importer: "Julio Donoso and Andre Ostertag started Montsecano in 2005. They planted 4 hectares of Pinot Noir in las...

100 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that simultaneously defines elegance and power. Complex aromas of blueberry, black currant, and black licorice. Full-body yet refined and beautiful with stunning length and complexity. It has a transparency that shows such greatness and beauty. Half the normal production. Has an energy and brightness. Chile's first perfect wine and well deserved. Better in 2020." Medium-to full-bodied with refined and polished tannins that are all together and so focused. Really integrated and melted together on the palate. Compact and very linear. Please give this two or three years to come completely together, but it’s already breathtaking."
