2017 Tania & Vincent Carême "Terre Brulée" Chenin Blanc Swartland

91 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty yellow apple, mirabelle plum and white peach flavors are gilded with honeysuckle and verbena notes. Shows good length on the finish, with a pretty whiff of shortbread. Chenin Blanc. Drink now. (JM)" (09/2018) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a quiet vintage of the Carêmes’ South African chenin blanc, the fruit off 40-year-old dry-farmed vines grown on shale and granite. Fermented with ambient yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and wood tanks (a small portion ferments in barriques), it feels broad and earthy, with an ...Read More »

92 points Vinous: "Bright medium ruby. Pungent, pure aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and herbs. Dense, saline, concentrated and juicy but silky and fine-grained too. Dark berry and violet flavors show terrific energy and definition, with pepper and herb notes providing additional lift. A touch of smoked meat adds another dimension but this wine stands out most for its terrific purity of fruit, inner-mouth perfume and building, subtle length. 2017 Waterkloof Circumstance "Cape Coral" Mourvèdre Rosé Stellenbosch (Biodynamic) (Previously $17)

A perennial staff and customer favorite at K&L, this is one of our best-selling and most-raved-about rosés every year. Hand-picked from biodynamically farmed, old Mourvèdre vines in a cool coastal sub-region of Stellenbosch, it's a fresh, elegant wine that does a fantastic impression of Bandol (which is also predominantly made from Mourvèdre), but at a fraction of the cost! Waterkloof is a stunning property working with very natural, non-interventionist methods. The wines are pure, expressive, and precisely balanced. 2014 Meerlust "Red" Stellenbosch South Africa

Winemaker Notes: "52% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot. The wine has an intense, dark purple colour with a violet rim; bright and vivacious in the glass, youthful. The nose is expressive with powerful cassis, plum, exotic spice and hints of floral aromas. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with intense flavours of crushed black fruit, cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate. The tannins are soft and silky, the acidity fresh, the flavour profile focused and linear. The wine has a persistent and long-lasting aftertaste."

Graham Beck Sparkling Wine South Africa

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Brut, which carries six grams per liter of residual sugar and was disgorged December 2016, is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It has a fresh lime and sea spray bouquet, well defined with a light honeysuckle aroma. The palate is well balanced with citrus peel on the entry. It might not be as persistent as other South African MCCs, but it is bounding with freshness and delivers a tangy orange-pith finish. 2018 Radley & Finch Chenin Blanc Western Cape

Sourced from across the broad Western Cape region of South Africa, Radley & Finch offers this Chenin Blanc at an attractive entry-level price. Grapes were sourced from both bush vines and trellised vines primarily in the Agter Paarl and Swartland regions. Winemaker Thinus Kruger primarily utilized indigenous yeasts in a particularly slow fermentation to develop complexity. The result is a citrusy and yellow fruited profile with hints of spice and grain. It is ready to drink right now, but will fill out and add complexity for a couple of years.

2016 Patatsblanc Colombard Chenin Montagu (Previously $20)

90 points, Christian Eedes: "Patatsblanc arose when Reenen Borman, the winemaker behind the celebrated Chenin Blanc from Patatsfontein in Montagu, decided that some of the Colombard on the property was too good to pass up and so devised a Colombard-Chenin Blanc blend intended to be accessible but not facile. The 2016, consisting of 88% Colombard and 12% Chenin Blanc, has just been released. The vineyards are mostly bushvines growing in granite and slate soils, sourced from a number of traditional farmers. Chenin Blanc is the backbone and structure of this blend. The Little J Red is a bistro red blend consisting of 86% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, and 4% Grenache. This is an unprentious, generous wine made from a selection of vineyards in mainly the AgterPaarl area (part of the Paarl appelation). The predominant soils are Malmesbury Shale. These soils have a surprisingly good moisture retention capability which allows for dry-land farming in this relatively warm and dry area. 2016 Rustenberg Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is the starting point for most newcomers to the wines of South Africa. It is familiar yet exotic. Here are large, perfectly tended estates, as you would find in regions throughout the fine wine growing world, but they are framed by the dramatic and ancient Drackenstein mountains, and sometimes views of the False Bay. Winemaking in the region and at Rustenberg dates back to the late seventeenth century. Their cellars have been in continuous production since 1892—how many Old World producers, let alone New World producers, can say that?

The palate is fresh on the entry with hazelnut, Chinese five-spice and smoky flavors, well balanced with satisfying depth and length on the finish. This is an excellent wine from winemaker John Seccombe, who has been producing some lovely, quite cerebral wines since his debut in 2013, cut ...Read More »

2017 Sadie Family Old Vine Series "Pofadder" Cinsault Swartland South Africa

95 points Vinous: "The 2017 Pofadder is pure Cinsault fermented in concrete tanks and conical foudres for 12 months. It has a clean, precise bouquet of tart red cherries, black currant leaf and a touch of chai tea. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity, gentle grip and a slightly brittle-textured but very penetrating, beautifully defined finish. I agree with Eben that this is one of the most elegant Pofadder I have tasted. (NM)" (08/2018) K&L Notes: Cinsault Whole-clusters are placed in wooden open-top fermenters, with 1 or 2 p ...Read More »

From the importer: "The hefty Cinsault component will ensure excellent aging and enough suppleness for drinking young. Perfumed, peppery, spicy, smokey aromas, with ripe red fruit notes. The palate is supple, smooth on the entry but with enough grip and freshness to finish dry and refreshing."

2016 A.A. Badenhorst "Ramnasgras" Old Vine Cinsault Swartland

93 points Wine & Spirits: "This cinsault comes from dry-farmed vines planted in the 1950s at the Badenhorst cousins' ranch in Swartland. It's farmed organically, the grapes fermented in whole bunches in open-top wooden vats, then aged in large barrels, presenting a deliciously fresh, fragrant red with lasting notes of forest strawberries. There's a red-fruit glow to the smooth tannins, firming up the wine's gentle richness, placing it with anything from pork rilettes to a crown roast." (06/2018) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Light and breezy in feel, with ...Read More »
