2017 Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro-Alvarinho Vinho Verde

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Amazing: Fresh white refreshment for $10. Buy a case and you’ll have a savory, salty Atlantic white to drink all summer long. Right now, it’s delicate, with filigreed lemon-lime flavors offering fruit depth before signing off in a crisp, clean finish. Chill it as an early-evening aperitif, a brunch wine for bacalhão fritters or pike quenelles, or a picnic wine for ventresca tuna salad." (08/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Branco Quinta da Aveleda, the Estate white in the Bordeaux-style bottle, not to be confuse ...

Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

1977 Graham's Vintage Port

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. 2016 Quinta do Crasto "Flor de Crasto" Douro

This is the producer's tank-aged, entry level offering, and a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. In April 2014, Mark Squires, writing in Wine Advocate, said of the new label: "When we last left off – in Issue 211 – discussing new Portuguese releases and how enticing many fresh, un-oaked, entry-level reds were at great prices, this was not yet here. Add it to the group, because as time goes on it is performing that function well. (Include Crasto’s regular Tinto, too, which sees only nominal oak.) It has a Beaujolais-like feel to i ...

There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development. (JM, Web Only-2017)" 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mouthfilling and round, without any sharp edges, but this wine remains extremely firm and dense, with several decades of life ahead of it. Croft "430th anniversary" Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 430th Anniversary Ruby Reserve Port is a blend of various grapes and field blends to reach an average age of 2.5 years old. It comes in with 90 grams of residual sugar. Although a non-vintage wine, this is a one-off, a single bottling for the 430th anniversary. This is chock-full of lifted fruit and flavor. Bright, fresh and pretty delicious, it is an easy drinker that nonetheless has some structure, although that is not the point. It is, of course, lighter styled, perhaps even a bit lighter than a Fonseca Bin 27. T ...

2017 Soalheiro Alvarinho Vinho Verde

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Alvarinho is dry (3.5 grams of sugar and 6.5 grams of total acidity) and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. Colloquially known as the "classico," the flagship unoaked Alvarinho, is typically one of the finest values in Vinho Verde. It ages effortlessly. It's concentrated and structured. Plus, with 100,000 bottles produced, there's enough of it to make it a little easier to acquire than some specialty bottlings. Sourced from 25-year-old vines, this shows off that bit of "Soalheiro Green," as I like to call it, th ...

One of the country's (and in fact, one of the world's) first modern white made with temperature controlled fermentation, this delicious wine is a field blend that is fermented with yeasts selected from their own vineyards and then given six months of ageing on the lees. Delicious stone fruit flavors are fresh and persistent, delivering loads of personality and terrific value. 1977 Taylor Vintage Port

98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in ...

2017 Soalheiro "Allo" Vinho Verde

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 ALLO (from the AL of Alvarinho and the LO of Loureiro) marked a departure last year for Soalheiro, generally considered to be an Alvarinho specialist (not that they were wholly uninvolved with Loureiro). It is a 70/30 blend of Alvarinho and Loureiro coming in at a relatively modest 11% alcohol (more like a Loureiro than an Alvarinho). Opening with plenty of zip, zing and zest, not to mention a bit of mouth pucker, this is in a livelier style than the pure Alvarinhos. The Loureiro, despite its modest perc ...

2013 Quinta do Popa Douro

A blend of mainly Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (tempranillo), Quinta do Popa's latest Douro release is a fine reflection of a cooler vintage, a wine that is relatively high toned and bright compared to the norm of richer, more darkly fruited wines in this warm region. That said, the winery typically does produce a more elegant style, as indicated by their large portion of Touriga Franca (as opposed to Touriga Nacional) grapes. A delicious, stylish Douro for drinking now.

" (01/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977. 1985 Taylor Vintage Port

93 points John Gilman: "I have had this wine a number of times out of half bottle over the last few years, and it is a lovely drink in the smaller-sized format. However, in 750 ml. it is not even remotely near ready. The nose is deep and still rather reticent in this size, reluctantly offering up a fine mix of cassis, black cherry, tobacco, a bit of tar, violets, smoke and spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and very well-delineated, with a rock solid core of fruit currently buttoned up tight behind a wall of ripe tannin. The finish is long ...

Sourced from 90+-year-old vines, this was pretty brilliant when last seen. This quality for $40 makes it a pretty nice deal. It is why smart consumers always look at regions that are not quite as famous. This shows fine concentration, controlled tannins and some licorice on the finish, probably an oak artifact. Drink now. (JM)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Sweet, woody, spicy fruitcake and cinnamon reveal themselves on the nose. The latest release in Taylor's 50-year Colheita program, this doesn't show a lot of energy, and it has a little bitterness on the finish. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. A classic summer red, as I like to call such wines these days, this is on track to be the best regular Alento that Luis has produced. 2018 Quinta do Regueiro Alvarinho Trajadura Minho

Quinta do Regueiro makes great wines from their Vinho Verde area vineyards, located a short 10 minute drive from the town of Melgaço. As the name indicates, this is a blend of Alvarinho (a specialty grape of the sub-zone) and Trajadura. Since it is not 100% Alvarinho yet from the Melgaço area, the label cannot state Vinho Verde, though in style and spirit I would certainly group it in that category of Portuguese wines.

Passion for the traditional indigenous grape varietals of Bairrada and Dão lead Filipa Pato to start her own project in 2001. This project consists of working on a total of 12 hectares of vineyards scattered in various plots throughout the Bairrada region of Portugal. Utilizing biodynamic farming practices and minimal-intervention winemaking, Filipa and her husband, Belgian sommelier and restaurateur William Wouters, produce Vinhos Autênticos Sem Maquilagem – ‘Authentic Wines Without Makeup.’
