Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are yet more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, for example. In Bolivia they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Seeing that Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, the Singani spirit distilled from it takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vib...

Suau is a Spanish producer on the island of Mallorca producing premium brandy, traditionally aged in the microclimate of their underground cellar, using the traditional solera system and under the same conditions the company once did 160 years ago. The eight year old expression is soft and smooth, easy to sip, and one hell of a bargain. It's perfect for entry level cocktails like the Sidecar or can be sipped straight for a seamless satisfaction.

91 points Wine Spectator: "An intensely juicy version, with raspberry and plum flavors that show pepper and slate accents. Features grippy tannins on the finish, with crunchy minerality. (KM)" (04/2019) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "This grows in Uruguay’s coastal hills, where Alejandro Bulgheroni invested in planting more than 1,000 parcels of vines. Working with consulting oenologist Alberto Antonini, the team fermented this wine in cement vats, then aged it in stainless steel and oak uprights. It’s tannat in a bright, spicy, accessible style, with an u...

Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

Produced at a Leeds certified winery, with the well regarded Alberto Antonini at the helm, Bodega Garzón's Albariño shows the great potential this grape may well have in Uruguay. Delicious stone fruit flavors with hints of lemongrass are just about pitch perfect for this popular Spanish grape variety. Recommended.

Made with "soft" water from Lake Bolmen in southern Sweden, known for its arctic purity, neutral corn spirits five-times distilled that lends sweetness to the gin and a blend of classic botanicals including juniper, coriander leaf and cardamom. The blend creates a gin with a warm, nutty spice punctuated by the addition of citrus (lemon, bergamot, lime and bitter orange) and sarawak black pepper, for a clean, refreshing gin with no funky aftertaste or astringency. Beautiful! Skip the tonic water with this gin; it's perfect unadulterated.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp and classic, this gin is ideal for martinis. A light cucumber aroma leads the nose, opening up with more cucumber and juniper on the palate, finishing smooth and brisk on nutmeg and coriander accents. (KN)" (08/2016) K&L Notes: Miller's Gin is handcrafted and made in very small batches. It's then transported by ship to Iceland. Here, in the small village of Borgarnes, on Iceland's remote west coast, lies the Selyri spring, source of some of the purest water to be found on earth. This spring water is blended with the s...

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of the most iconic Trappist beers, this pours a gorgeous golden-orange color, with a large, frothy off-white head that lingers. Bottled with brettanomyces, you can immediately pick up on the wonderfully complex, dry, funky earth and barnyard notes, with additional aromas of orange peel, green apple, gingered white tea, yeasty spice and freshly baked bread. The medium-bodied mouthfeel boasts bright, fizzy carbonation and refreshing acidity, making the palate seem light and approachable. It finishes dry and spicy, with flavo...

One of the best known Quadrupels available on the market today, the St. Bernardus Abt 12 has earned its place in the spotlight. Based on one of the original recipes from the Trappist Monks of Westvleteren, which was given to the cheese-making abbey of St. Bernardus. (From WWII until 1992 the beer was sold under the names Trappist Westvleteren, St. Sixtus and Sixtus.) The beer is dark and full-bodied, with a fruity nose and complex palate striking the perfect balance between malty, bitter and sweet.

Dancing pink elephants? No this beer is not like watching Dumbo under the influence of psychedelics, but it is intense. Made by Huyghe-Melle, the oldest still-active brewery in Ghent, Belgium. Their best known brew--and perhaps one of the best-known Belgian beers in all the U.S.--is the Delirium Tremens, a blonde ale with mouth-coating malt flavors, bitter peppery notes and bright, complementary fruit.

"Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is a prestige beer from De Dolle Brouwers, brewed for Christmas. It has a very potent beer (12% alc/vol). It has been boiling for many hours, brewed with pale malt with white candy sugar in the kettle. The Nugget hops gives an extra bitterness to balance the extreme sweetness due to the density. The taste triangle is completed with some acidity of the fermentation. It is a very interesting beer to age. We have samples of every bottling we have done so far and aging hasn't decreased the quality of this beer. Keep some samples ...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "It would be easy to mistake this gin for a raspberry-flavored vodka. With a distinct raspberry note in the aroma, this gin offers notes of lemon peel and black pepper, rounding into a raspberry note on the clean finish. (KN)" (08/2015)

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "An earthy, dry, clean, and bean- and cane-like aroma with delicate scents of cocoa bean, vanilla bean, and brown sugar. The palate entry is bittersweet, concentrated and beany; at midpalate the flavor profile becomes sweeter and more like vanilla extract. The bean intensity reaches its bittersweet zenith in the high-flying aftertaste. Chic, racy, and delicious. *Superb, Highly Recommended*" (06/2006) K&L Notes: Distilled and bottled on the island paradise of Mauritius. The locally grown cane matures on volcanic soils, whi...

From the Importer: "This is exciting stuff - Alain stumbled upon some beautifully exposed vineyards while bicycling in the Zenata region of Morocco, and ended up starting a relationship with the domaine who owned it (Domaine des Ouled Thaleb). Alain is in charge of making the wine, which he has crafted into a fruit-forward but definitively Old-World style (i.e. modestly extracted, balanced, aromatic)."
Price: $19.99

According to the brewery: "Named after atom bomb test grounds, designed by a French car engineer - the bikini was to many a disturbing and degrading creation and, fortunately for others, a symbol of emancipation. This attractively light bodied, seductively well balanced, and very drinkable Sour Bikini is anything but a sissy beer."

"The Gueuze Tilquin à l’ancienne (6.4% alc / vol) is a spontaneous fermentation beer obtained from the blending of 1, 2 and 3 years old lambics. Unfiltered and unpasteurized, it is re-fermented in the bottle for a minimum period of 6 months. The lambics used were fermented and matured in our own oak barrels at the blendery. They are made from worts brewed by Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon. The taste is tart and dry but has a certain roundness that makes this Gueuze à l’ancienne particularly accessible for non-experts. It will also delight fans o...
