Del Maguey "Vida" Mezcal (750ml) (Previously $39.00)

Wine Enthusiast: "This clear and light-bodied mezcal has a faintly smoky aroma and a mildly peppery flavor. A potent, alcoholic finish fades into black pepper. The "Vida" is still produced 100% according to the 400-year-old local tradition of small-batch distillation and using nothing but the agave heart and water in the mezcal. Dos Hombres Espadin Mezcal Artesanal (750ml)

Mezcal fans rejoice. Breaking Bad fans rejoice. Dos Hombres Mezcal has arrived. After Breaking Bad wrapped, Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston were pretty bummed out they wouldn't be working together anymore, so they did what any spirit loving person would do and decided to start a Mezcal brand. However, they also learned lessons from some other celeb brands and realized they didn't want to just slap their name on something they liked, but source a quality product from real artisans. Turns out that Bryan and Aaron have quite different tastes when it comes to ...

From Mezcalreviews.com: "Mal Bien Espadin is produced by Don Juan Hernández Méndez in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. He is a fifth generation mezcalero and he follows the traditions and processes that his family has been using for over one hundred years. This mezcal smells of roasted meat, ground corn, and pine tar. On the palate, there are notes of leather, caramelized banana, and barley."

Berta is in her 60s now and has been making Mezcal since she was a child, learning all of her techniques from her grandfather. Madre Mezcal (200ml)

Madre Mezcal hails from the tiny village of San Dionisio Ocotepec. In between Chichicapam and Matatlan, the village is in the heart of Mezcal country. The Garcia Morales family has been growing agave for generations here and they make one of the most balanced and inviting mezcals we've ever come across. A blend of estate grown Espadin and wild harvest Cuishe, the agave is cooked for days over pine. After being pressed in the traditional tahona, the juice is fermented naturally over the course of nearly two weeks and distilled twice in copper potstills. D ...

El Viejo is a special blend of Tobala and Espadin from Union Mezcal. The Union between the producers, farmers, and importers is what this brand is all about. The brand helps support a replanting project for wild agaves through a careful nursery program and replanting the young plants back into their natural wild habitat. The success rate for these agaves is many times higher than for cultivation attempts. It's these type of brands and projects that will help ensure we have Mezcal to enjoy for many years to come. Mezcal Vago is the business creation of Judah Kuper in conjunction with his in-laws in Oaxaca: a family of distillers that has been making mezcal for generations. Vago marks the first time their products have been available commercially, having previously been consumed solely by friends and family. Mezcal Vago Espadin By Emigdio Jarquin Mezcal (750ml)

The newest addition to the Vago family, Emigdio Jarquin's palenque is based in Miahuatlan among the rolling hills two and a half hours due south of Oaxaca City. A specialist in the Espadin varietal of agave, he roasts the piñas for 5-7, which is on the longer side compared to other mezcaleros in the region. After crushing the agave with a large cement tahona, Emigdio distills in a 300L copper refrascador, similar to a copper alambic still, which essentially allows for two distillations in the same pass. [Cannot ship. I first stumbled across the Verde Momento at an excellent bar called Guilty in Guadalajara. This city is vibrant, complex, and cosmopolitan, filled with excellent food and highbrow cocktail stops along side old school saloons, bad tourist traps and well worn corners where some of the world's finest tacos are slung. The "old way" of making mezcal is a loaded term, but in this case Los Nahuales is referring to a method of dilution using the tails of the first run (codas) with the heart of the second distillation. This practice was originally banned by the NORMA regulations governing the production and export of mezcal, but Nahuales has had the prohibition over turned. That means that all certified mezcal that's been diluted has used water to achieve a lower proof, instead of this old method. The tails from the first run are full of life and complexity.
