The creators of Cazadores Tequila are back with this wonderful, value reposado. The Bañuelos family, one of Mexico's most succesful tequila producing families, sold their label to Bacardi but never their recipe. This is the original, and the reason Cazadores is so well loved. Its attractive agave spice and well balanced use of oak make this bottle good enough to sip, but you don't have to feel bad if it ends up in your "agave cocktail."

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a bold, vegetal aroma marked by bell and jalapeño pepper. The palate is fairly spicy up front, with black pepper and jalapeño sparks against a vegetal core. The mineral-laced finish is clean and bracing. (KN)" (05/2017) K&L Notes: El Tesoro de Don Felipe Tequila began in 1937 when the brand's namesake founded the still traditional distillery in Los Altos (the highlands) of Jalisco, Mexico. The methods implemented by Don Felipe de Jesús Camarena remain intact today, including traditional hornos (ovens) and tahona whe...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is very pale in the glass, but with a zesty, savory aroma that suggests fresh oregano and basil. The palate melds that herbaceousness with hints of almond and lemon cream, plus cinnamon and white pepper on the elongated finish. Sip or mix. (KN)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: Siete Leguas, named after the horse belonging to Pancho Villa, is a Highlands tequila from Atotonilco El Alto. Agave piñas are harvested, cooked in ovens, and then pressed by either a mule-driven tahona or shredded by more contemporary techniques. The ag...

NOM 1416 is well known to produce high quality distillate. This anejo is rich and smooth on the palate with plenty of vanilla and baking spices on the finish. Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. Their small community of Mengoli de Morelos happens to have some of Oaxaca's best distillers. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as fo...

It can hardly get more pure than this--basically, this is Fortaleza Blanco direct from the still. Distillery tasting notes: "Aromas of fruit, baked fully-ripened agave, green olive, and earth are invitingly present. Slightly brighter and a touch more rustic than the regular blanco, the accents of butter, olive, earth, black pepper, and vegetal qualities in the flavor are enhanced because it comes straight from our small copper pot still, without adding water prior to bottling."

Coveted for its high concentration of sugars over decades of growth, the mezcal tends to offer a fruity and fragrant approach, balanced with high proof and a rich body. A rare gem to experience...

Grown at high elevation (around 5,000 ft), tucked into the countryside surrounding the highly regarded mezcal producing village of San Baltazar Guelavila, this is a benchmark example of classic Tobala. A strong balance between earth, smoke, and sweet yam, with a dry salinity on the finish and a rich mouthfeel. The tiny Tobala, harvested wild at 10–15 years old, yields very low amounts of sugar (and thus, mezcal); it can take up to three plants to produce one bottle.

The “mother” of Agave karwinskii, the large and resinous Madrecuishe grows tall and proud in Miahuatlán. A long, cylindrical trunk (which harvested resembles a huge cigar) is topped with a tall, green bloom of leaves, spreading out from the trunk’s heart. From this trunk or stem, the Madrecuishe carries a lot of fiber alongside its highly concentrated sugars. A balance of fruity and vegetal notes is a hallmark of the distillate, implying everything from leafy green herbs to sweet carrots to raspberry seeds. An ideal example of this beloved varietal.

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Though it's made with ancho chiles, this liqueur is modest on the spice scale. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey.
