It all began at John Rexer's Bohemian artist refuge, Café No Se in Antigua, Guatemala. Opened in 2003, Café No Se became the heart of a thriving expat and artisan community of Antigua. As John's business grew, his interest in mezcal led him to "import" the mystical spirit in very "creative" ways. His customers took to the spirit and to satisfy the growing demand, he was forced to...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Though it’s light straw in the glass, with hardly any color, the flavor is robust and complex. Scented with perky black pepper and spice, the palate echoes the pepper up front, followed by a fleeting meaty umami note midpalate and a long finish that boasts sparks of ginger and cayenne. Aged eight months." (05/2015)

A blanco with a little extra bite, created with the bartender in mind. The distiller's notes: "While shaping the flavor profile for Siembra Valles Blanco, the team at Cascahuin kept coming back to taste the spirit at still-proof. The Rosales family has developed a slow distillation process that yields a Tequila at 92 proof. Lastly, Valles High Proof is rested for 11 months in glass demijohns for a truly unique experience." Now produced using Cascahuin's new Tahona press.

Ocho's tequilas are made by Carlos Camarena, a third-generation Tequilero, and Tequila Ambassador Tomas Estes, and each vintage—yes, these are vintage designated tequilas—comes from a single estate with its own mesoclimate, making them the most terroir-driven tequilas on the market. The NOM 1474 or Tequilera Los Alambiques actually represents the very same facility where the famous Tapatio and El Tesoro are made, the famous La Altena Distillery. This collaboration seeks to distill the purest form of agave to highlight the distinct flavor differences betw...

One of the most vibrant and affordable new mezcales to hit our shelf in years, the Tosba Espadin has the tangy character of the agave on the palate and a healthy dollop of smoke to balance it all out. Tosba is imported by Elisandro Gonzalez-Molina and his cousin Edgar Gonzalez-Ramirez; both who are from the small village of San Cristóbal Lachirioag in Oaxaca. It was their hope to bring the wonderful spirits of their pueblo to the U.S. market and we're very happy they've done so.

El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Inside the handsome, hefty bottle are spice-rack aromas. But the flavors are light and complex, interlacing honey with lime zest, mineral and faint white flowers that float off at the end. A top pick for pitchers of high-end margaritas. (KN)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: Frank Mendez called me one day and told me he'd like to come present his new family project: Gran Dovejo tequila. While Frank and his cousin don't come from a tequila making background, they consider themselves aficionados and feel the same exasperation I do toward ...

Wine Spectator: "Smooth, peppery and clean. Produced by the Orendain family, whose members, according to importer Gimenez, are among the most experienced distillers in Jalisco. (MD)" (05/2003) K&L Notes: The Arette Reposado is my absolute favorite tequila. It isn't the best I've ever tasted, but it is my favorite. Here's why: it smells like fresh agave, despite the barrel aging, which only adds baking spices to the background of the bouquet. It is simultaneously graceful, yet spicy upon the first sip. It balances the bridge between smooth sipper and br...

In 2010, the Cortés family began building a collective of top mezcal distillers from around Oaxaca. As of 2019, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, working in ten different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, each with its own special story. Every bottle i...

The latest addition to our selection of craft mezcals hails from the heart the Mexican highlands in Durango. Made from 10- to 13-year-old piñas of agave cenizo, Burrito Fiestero is entirely handcrafted (with the help of some small but hardy donkeys or "burritos"). Notes from the distiller: "Burrito Fiestero is made out of agave cenizo, endemic to the state of Durango. This maguey takes from 10 -13 years to mature. Once naked from its spikes, it is carried and trasported by donkey down the mountain to begin with the elaboration process. It is here where o...

Wine Enthusiast: "An agricole rhum from Oaxaca, the region better known for mezcal, this is an exciting proposition. The liquid is clear in the glass, with a pungent, funky scent and bold notes of banana and cinnamon on the palate, finishing fiery, though with a pleasing, fleeting grassy exhale. (KN)" (06/2018) Wine & Spirits: "From the misty Mazateca mountains of Oaxaca comes a rum so beautifully expressive of sugar cane that it might just make people forget about agave. Paranubes is made in a high-altitude 'cloud forest' about six hours by car from O...

The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

The excellent newly arrived Bruxo Mezcal is one of the most luscious and approachable mezcal we've ever come across. There's wonderful texture and richness even at 80 proof and quality of the spirit itself is what really stands out. Of course, the mysterious origin and name of this product also add to its mystique. The Hermanos Sanchez Altamirano are 4th generation Mezcaleros learned from their late father Faustino Sanchez. The distillery uses some unique techniques, specifically the use of Hebradora (wood chipper) and Tahona used in conjunction. Agave is roasted in 10 ton stone lined pits over oak for 3 days and rested another 5. Then it is fed in to a wood chipper. The agave fibers are then placed in the tahona pit and crushed by the horse drawn stone. This reduces the workload on the animal and extracts significantly more juice from the flavorful fibers. The jui...
