Rey Campero "Tio Ramiro" Cuishe K&L Exclusive Single Batch Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This extremely rare batch of Cuishe is why we make a point of travelling to visit producers. Originally not for sale, we were able to taste this extremely special batch while at the Rey Campero Palenque in Candelaria Yegole in February, 2020. This batch alone would have made the nearly 4 hour dirt road journey worth the trek. This was distilled by Romulo's father, 'Tio Ramiro' - who taught Romulo how to make mezcal. This superlative batch was destined for family gatherings and celebrations, just resting in a giant food grade tote off to the side of the t...

The follow up to the unbelievable first batch of Huerta Singular, the Las Antenas highlights a completely different terroir with the same goal of creating a completely unique example of blanco tequila. The over-ripe pinto Blue Weber agave for this batch was grown entirely in the mineral-laden caliche soils of Vista Hermosa in Michoacán. The ground is rich in calcium carbonate at the high elevation field. Just over five thousand feet from the sea level, the agave was left to ripen in the field after the quixote was cut resulting in an ultra-ripe "pinto" o...

The Ramos Family doesn't usually have much Arroqueno, but you can see the few massive plants easily as you walk toward as you walk through the fields. The massive sword like leafs tower above all but the tallest Karwkinskii and their ashy color distinguishes them from other A. Americana in the field. The 2019 harvest only yielded about 100 liters and the family consumed or sold about half of it in the 4 months between when it was distilled and when we arrived. One taste and you'll know exactly why. This excellent example of the already well-liked varieta...

In the early spring of 2019, the K&L buying team travelled to Oaxaca to search for incredible small batch examples from Mexico's very best producers. We visited the Ramos family rancho expecting great things. What we found were three exquisite micro batches offering unprecedented flavor and rarity. The creators of Mal Bien Mezcal are building incredible partnerships with their producers. They've become like family and after sitting with the Emmanuel for lunch we ventured into the locked shed behind the house where the family stores their mezcal. This ins...

This 99-liter batch (119 bottles) was distilled from mature agave Espadin and wild-harvested Tobaziche (A. Karwinski). Maestro mezcalero "Tio" Pedro Pascual Hernandez Arrellanes cooked hte Espadin and Tobaziche pinas in an undreground conical oven wiht huamuche firewood for five days. Created by certified Maestro Tequilero Guillermo Barroso Arnaud, El Pintor is an expression of Arnaud's quest to find balance between the art and science of tequila creation. Utilizing highland agave cooked in autoclaves for 10 hours, the clean steamed agave is then fermented with ancestral yeasts from the hacienda that's been cultivated for decades. The tequila is then slowly distilled on very small copper pot stills. The spirit rests in used bourbon barrels for between 3-4 years before a proprietary filtration processes is used to remove the subtle amb...

El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

The Hermanos Sanchez Altamirano are 4th generation Mezcaleros learned from their late father Faustino Sanchez. The distillery uses some unique techniques, specifically the use of Hebradora (wood chipper) and Tahona used in conjunction. Agave is roasted in 10 ton stone lined pits over oak for 3 days and rested another 5. Then it is fed in to a wood chipper. The agave fibers are then placed in the tahona pit and crushed by the horse drawn stone. This reduces the workload on the animal and extracts significantly more juice from the flavorful fibers. The jui...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Elegant nose emits traces of mushrooms, dried herbs and lead pencil with deeper scents of mustard seed, vanilla bean and toffee. Palate is sublimely rich with succulent, brandy/Cognac-like flavors of oak resin, almond butter and tobacco leaf. Finishes Sherry-like and smooth. One of the best Tequilas available. (PP)" (06/2006)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rare extra-aged Tequila that smells more like the agave than the barrel, mixing agave and faint jalapeño aromas. The palate is light, a refreshing mix of agave, fresh jalapeño and bell peppers, while the drying finish shows warming clove, cocoa and chocolate-covered cherry. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: 100% blue agave aged for 36 months in American white oak barrels. Each bottle of this limited production tequila is decorated by hand.

Erick Rodriguez is widely known as one of Mexico's most knowledgable and adventerous bottlers of Mezcal. His tiny shop, Almamezcalera, has become famous among the agave cognicenti and his selections are legendary. We're very lucky to have access to this tiny unusual batch of uncertified mezcal (bottled as aguardiente de agave). Maestro Patricio Hernandez cooks the piñas in a stone oven, then mills the cooked agave using a traditional tahona; to ferment, however, around 30% fresh pulque is added to the crushed agave in a pine vat (a 'tina'), almost like a...

Rey Campero is another stellar discovery in the realm of artisanal mezcal. With a focus on six different strains of native, wild-grown agave. Using double distillation in a copper alembic still, and either earthen or buried ovens for roasting the piñas, master mezcalillero Rómulo Sánchez Parada is producing some of the most inspired, hand-crafted mezcals we've seen in quite some time.

The exceptional Cascahuin Distillery in the city of El Arenal is one of the finest in the Lowland. Not only are they committed to quality like few other distillers in Jalisco, they've been crucial in the re-creation of the ancestral style of tequilas for Siembra Spirits as well as recently constructed a Tahona press on their property. They use only the finest fully mature agave and represent an authenticity that is lost in almost all but a tiny handful of tequila producers. Their extremely rare and limited Extra Anejo is the culmination of years of patie...

This is real deal old school Raicilla like few other products on the market. A blend of 60% Angustifolia Haw and 40% Rhodacantha (locally called Chico Aguillar and Amarillo respectively) cooked under ground in traditional conical ovens. Fermentation is conducted in open air tubs with wild yeast. This is then distilled twice on wooden potstills carved from the sacred Oyamel trunk. The resulting spirit is wild and powerful with unparalleled depth and racing acidity. A unique example of what Jalisco has to offer locally called as "vino", but officially mar...

Another addition to K&L's ever-expanding selection of exclusive tequilas and mezcals, this micro-production, artisanal offering comes from one of the hidden gems of from our searches in the far reaches of mezcal country in Mexico. From the producer: "Rezpiral is a spirits label, project and fair trade practice that brings beautiful selections of the highest quality traditional artisanal single-batch (non-certified) Mezcals into a handful of places in the USA. At the core of the project is the embrace of an ethos that aims to respect and support the mult...

This match of Madrecuixe is distilled entirely from plants harvest in the chalky fields next to the Cortes family home. While biologically similar to other agave Karwinskii this cultivated version is disctinct in flavor compared to others like Bicuixe or Barril. This batch was roasted in the underground ovens at the Cortes distillery for 8-10 days over encino, yegareche, mesquite and palo de aguila wood. Rested for another 5-7 days after cooking before 8 days of natural fermentation in sabino wood. Distilled on two small pot stills withe the refrescadera...

Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) or Candido Reyes makes some of Bruxo's best stuff. His wild harvest Tobala is one of the family's most limited production offerings. The small rare wild agave tend to grow in cooler shaded areas, typically under oak trees. Few other agave feature the incredible finesse and elegance that a solid Tobala exudes, and Tio Conejo is making one of the very best. Exceptional even by Bruxo's wildly high standards.

The powerfully flavored Mexicano Verde (A. Rhodacantha) is named because of the vibrant green coloring of its broad pencas. But the name also perfectly embodies the flavors we get when this rare varietal is distilled: earthy, mineral, vegetal, funky. This batch was roasted in the underground ovens at the Cortes distillery for 8-10 days over encino, yegareche, mesquite and palo de aguila wood. Rested for another 5-7 days after cooking before 8 days of natural fermentation in sabino wood. Distilled on two small pot stills withe the refrescadera and adjuste...

The most traditional method for production in the Miahuatlan area (and all over Oaxaca) is simply to take the agave that's most mature out of the fields and roast them together for an ensamble or "mezcla". This practice of course diminishes the indivdual characteristics of the various plants, but also creates new and unique flavors from the combinations in roasting and fermentation that would never exist when individual plants are processed alone. Victor and his son Emmanuel are 3rd and 4th generations distillers and make use tof the abundance of agave k...
