96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although billed as a joven, this Tequila is blended with a touch of añejo. The end result is extraordinarily smooth, with a very sweet, fruity, almost wine-like nose but a bold, pure peppery flavor that finishes cleanly. The packaging is gift-worthy, presenting the bottle in a gold-and-robin’s egg blue box, like a precious jewel. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Casa Dragones is 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila. Tequila Tapatio "Excelencia" Extra Añejo Tequila (1L)
Top Pick!
The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus. It is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

Siembra Valles Ancestral is a project conceived of a love of history and a desire to know tequila from its roots, celebrating its true identity and a curiosity of what the past once tasted like. With agave untouched by machine, the Ancestral boasts the complexity of nature's flavors and the skills of tequilero ancestry. It begins its journey through time in the pristine blue agave fields nurtured by the Rosales family’s team of expert cultivators, jimadores, and a lowland terroir. The fruitful plants can credit their rich flavors to a pesticide-free land...

5 Sentidos started as the house spirit of the acclaimed restaurant in Oaxaca city "El Destilado" and has become a platform to uplift numerous traditional producers who otherwise wouldn't be able to sell their products on the international stage. There's a stigma in Mexico of exporting uncertified agave spirits, driven by the idea that mezcal's denomination of origin is synonymous with quality. In fact, the system shuts out many traditional producers and allows countless industrial practices that should be considered inferior. That's why many of the great...

The incredible organization began in a little bar in Guadalajara where Pedro Jiminez began to educate about these special spirits. The Tepe comes from Aciano Mendoza a ...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The hand-painted ceramic bottle is gorgeous, but so is what's in the bottle: a blend of three-four- and five-year old Tequilas. Look for a deep amber hue and complex aromas that unfold jalapeño, brown sugar and cocoa. The palate-coating, slightly viscous palate opens with clove and coriander, warming to cocoa, browned butter, and sarsaparilla, and finishes on black pepper and cinnamon. The overall effect almost reads like a Tequila-based amaro. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Grand Mayan is a rare Extra Añejo from the exceptional...

Lalocura Pechuga Mezcal (750ml)
Back In Stock!
Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Eduardo Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master distiller of his family’s label Real Minero, where he combined a lifetime of working under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo with a degree in agricultural engineering, and a philosophy that is all his own.

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

This single batch of Rey Campero mezcal yeilded roughly 264 bottles, half of which remained in Mexico. The other half is exclusive to K&L. Distilled in October 2017, this batch rested for 30 months in glass before being bottled. This extended resting process gives this particular batch an increased sense of smoothness and elegance while carrying all of the robust flavors of Tepextate (A. Marmorata) and Pulquero (A. Atrovirens) agaves. This unique 50/50 field blend was a one time production created by Romulo Sanchez almost 3 years ago. This is one of the ...

The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

Kara Newman of Wine Enthusiast writes: "Need a new spirit to pair with chicken? Pechuga mezcal, a traditional spirit of Mexico’s Oaxaca region, could be worth your attention. After all, it’s made with meat. Pechuga (“breast” in Spanish) is a style of mezcal that involves hanging a piece of raw chicken breast inside the still during distillation. The heat and steam from the process cook the chicken as the spirit distills, killing any harmful bacteria present (no need to worry about salmonella here), allowing the meat’s fat and juices to drip into the mez...

Real Minero "Espadin" Mezcal (750ml)

Real Minero is wildly considered one of the finest mezcal producers. The Mendoza family has farmed Agave for decades but they've been distilling since the 70s and become one of Mexico's most sought after producers. Using clay pot stills, they produce one of the cleanest highest quality products around, but only about 300 liters per month so stocks are tight. It's certified organic, Oaxacan owned and absolutely delicious. Clay pot-distilled mezcal from Eduardo Ángeles, who started Lalocura in 2014 after distilling at his family's Real Minero, that has already attracted a cult following. According to the producer: "Lalocura is produced in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, where Maestro Eduardo Ángeles was born and raised, where he learned to distill from his father, and where his palenque is located today. Like all traditional mezcales made in Minas, the agave piñas are roasted in an earthen oven, mashed by hand, fermented outdoors, and distilled in clay pots. It's a process t...

97 points and 2019 Best Extra Añejo Tequila from the Beverage Tasting Institute: "Gold color. Attractive aromas of cedar, caramel, crushed pineapple, eucalyptus-vanilla, and fine tea with a round, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, complex, very long allspice, lime leaf, dried mango, smoke, and sea salt finish. The massive Arroqueño, a subspecies of the Agave americana, typically takes around twenty years to mature. Grown wild, the varietal was nearly extinct just a few decades ago, but has recovered in recent years, its population regrowing especially in southern Oaxaca districts like Miahuatlán through the efforts of mezcaleros and conservation activists in the region. Coveted for its high concentration of sugars over decades of growth, the mezcal tends to offer a fruity and fragrant approach, balanced with high proof and a rich body. A rare gem to experience...

Harvested after growing 20–25 years in the wild, the Tepeztate grows to be massive; nearly the size of a VW Bug or a Mini Cooper. Found at high elevations, they often grow directly out of sheer rock walls and cliff faces, giving shade to smaller agave (such as Tobala) growing nearby. With huge leaves (pencas) lolling out, their brilliant, red teeth serrating a soft and textured flesh, the Tepeztate is arguably the most varietally consistent agave in distillation. Notes of green bananas, soft flowers, bell peppers, and melons recur in numerous examples, a...

Coming from some of Jalisco's highest elevation fields, the extreme weather, unique terroir, and meticulous farming have converged to create this "little devil." Aged for a minimum of 3 years in new French Limousin oak, as all the 123 tequilas are, the Diablito is certified organic with absolutely no additives. Packaged in a beautifully engraved wooden box, the Diablito wil...

Erick Rodriguez is widely known as one of Mexico's most knowledgable and adventerous bottlers of Mezcal. His tiny shop, Almamezcalera, has become famous among the agave cognicenti and his selections are legendary. We're very lucky to have access to this tiny unusual batch of uncertified mezcal (bottled as aguardiente de agave). Maestro Patricio Hernandez cooks the piñas in a stone oven, then mills the cooked agave using a traditional tahona; to ferment, however, around 30% fresh pulque is added to the crushed agave in a pine vat (a 'tina'), almost like a...

Grown at high elevation (around 5,000 ft), tucked into the countryside surrounding the highly regarded mezcal producing village of San Baltazar Guelavila, this is a benchmark example of classic Tobala. A strong balance between earth, smoke, and sweet yam, with a dry salinity on the finish and a rich mouthfeel. The tiny Tobala, harvested wild at 10–15 years old, yields very low amounts of sugar (and thus, mezcal); it can take up to three plants to produce one bottle.

The “mother” of Agave karwinskii, the large and resinous Madrecuishe grows tall and proud in Miahuatlán. A long, cylindrical trunk (which harvested resembles a huge cigar) is topped with a tall, green bloom of leaves, spreading out from the trunk’s heart. From this trunk or stem, the Madrecuishe carries a lot of fiber alongside its highly concentrated sugars. A balance of fruity and vegetal notes is a hallmark of the distillate, implying everything from leafy green herbs to sweet carrots to raspberry seeds. An ideal example of this beloved varietal.

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...
