2015 Fratelli Barale Barolo
Top Pick!
Monica Larner writes: "One of the oldest estates in the Langhe, Fratelli Barale was founded in 1870, shortly after the Barolo denomination was created with the help of Marchesi Falletti and founding father of modern Italy, Count of Cavour, Camillo Benso. Sergio Barale and his daughters manage the estate today. The various expressions of Barolo are all aged from two to three years in botte grande."

91 points Decanter: "Richly aromatic with apple and lemon curd notes. A soft, well-integrated mousse is complemented by notes of lemon sherbet Blind tasted by Fabio GiavedoniAndy Howard MWAlessandra Piubello(at The Institute of Masters of Wine, 29 Nov 2018) " (11/2018) K&L Notes: San Venanzio has won many awards over the years. At K&L they get the coveted "Guido" award of two thumbs up and three stars for value. On the nose, there are generous notes of apples, peaches, tropical fruits and pear blossom. It’s wonderfully balanced and elegant, with a plea...

2016 Fèlsina "Fontalloro" Toscana (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "Amazing aromas of licorice, wet earth, orange peel and lavender. Full body, tight and super compact and polished. Goes on for minutes. Clearly great. " (06/2019) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far. This is a very elegant vintage, with more volume in the mouth and precise notes of tar, licorice, camphor ash, resin and Indian spice. In a race between the highly competitive 2015 and 2016 vintages, I give a slight advantage to this wi...

2013 Il Valentiano "Campo di Marzo" Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
91 points James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberry and oyster shell follow through to a medium to full body, silky tannins and a bright finish. Not the most complex wine but delicious. Drink now." (11/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Il Valentiano 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Campo di Marzo is a densely enriched expression of Sangiovese. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, plum and dried fig. There is barbecue spice and sweet tobacco as well. Three years in oak has shaped the volume and the rich texture of the wine. The wine is a bit edgy o...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba Le Rose offers a sweet and floral bouquet with rose hip, dried fig and cherry pie. The Dolcetto grape loves a hot vintage, and that's exactly what it got in 2017. Winemaking is simple (the wine completes malolactic fermentation in oak) in order to preserve that succulent and rich quality of fruit. This wine puts the dolce (or "sweet") in Dolcetto. (ML)" (08/2018)

2015 Silla Il Piaggione Chianti Classico Riserva
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Spectator: "Perfumed, this red features ripe black cherry, blackberry, black currant, violet, iron, loamy earth and sanguine aromas and flavors. More approachable than its peers at this stage, with fine structure, if a little less density. Long finish. Drink now through 2032. (BS)" (07/2019)

2016 La Massa "La Massa" Toscana
Back In Stock!
93 points James Suckling: "This shows some really impressive, herbal complexity, spanning a whole spectrum of rosemary and pine needles, before tile, crushed stones, blackcurrants and bay leaves enter the picture. The polish to the firm yet generous tannins captivates, as does the precision to the acidity and long finish. " (07/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 La Massa is a terrific blend of 65% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon available at an accessible price. Alicante Bouschet was used in the blend until last ...

Fabiano and Valentina are the next generation owners of one of the oldest properties in Montalcino. The local Brunello grapes (Sangiovese Grosso) are world-renowned known for their rich flavors and ability to age beautifully. Rosso di Montalcino DOC – 100% Sangiovese. The typical meal in this part of Tuscany always starts with the Rosso (Red) and ends with the Brunello, followed by a Vin Santo. Rosso is the second growth of Brunello and still very enjoyable! Medium body, peppery, fresh in acidity; pairs well with antipasti with Lardo di Colonnata, mild ...

2016 Fratelli Barale "Serraboella" Barbaresco
Top Pick!
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rose, wild berry and leather aromas mingle with menthol and a whiff of truffle. The firmly structured, focused palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, star anise and game alongside taut, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Best 2022-2028. (KO)" (10/2019) 93 points Vinous: "Barale's 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is gorgeous. Rich, translucent and super-expressive, the 2016 has so much to offer. Macerated cherry, plum, lavender, spice, sage and new leather are all vibrant in the glass. Medium in body and plaint, the 2016 is a ...

2015 Fratelli Revello Barolo
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "The dark-berry, strawberry and charcoal aromas are impressive. Full bodied and totally integrated with wonderful presence and composure of fruit and tannin balance. Lovely finish. Lingers." (01/2019)

92 points James Suckling: "Very attractive melon and nectarine aromas. The palate is ripe and generous, but with lively acidity that keeps it straight and clean. Quite a rich finish. Drink now. " (08/2018)

2014 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Wild herb, perfumed berry and pressed rose aromas lift out of the glass along with a whiff of eucalyptus. Smooth, delicious and balanced, the lithe palate has great tension, doling out juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and baking spice backed up by vibrant acidity. Silky tannins give it extraordinary elegance and linear structure. It won't take years to come around but it also boasts good midterm aging potential. *Editor's Choice* (KO)" (02/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like most producers in ...

2015 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "The sliced plums and peaches are plentiful here on the nose. Full-bodied and dense with round and rich tannins and a long, long finish. Shows structure and intensity. Serious Brunello. Better after 2022." (10/2019)

2015 La Massa "Giorgio Primo" Toscana
Top Pick!
97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine blew my mind. The 2015 Giorgio Primo is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. I'm told that the percentage of Merlot will increase in 2016 (to a majority role) but will diminish by a large margin in 2017 because that hot vintage was so difficult on early-ripening varieties. The bouquet is nothing short of explosive, with inky black fruit followed by pencil shaving, chalkboard, wet river stone and all the other beautiful mineral notes that I so closely associate with Panzano in Chianti....

Antonio Galloni writes: "I was once again deeply impressed with the wines I tasted at La Ca' Nova this past summer. Of all the estates I visit regularly, La Ca' Nova may very well have the most untapped potential. The quality of the wines notwithstanding, prices remain incredibly fair."

Ettore Spina and his wife, Enrica Bandirola, owners of Sesta di Sopra, planted a new vineyard to Sangiovese in 2005. It has the same Galestro soils as the others, perfect for taming Sangiovese's natural vigor. Unfortunately, in Montalcino all of the Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino vineyards are all registered and controlled, and they aren't allowing any more to be added right now, so the wine that comes from this new vineyard has to be designated an IGT (Indicates Geographic Tipicity). (Greg St. Clair, K&L Italian Wine Buyer)
Price: $16.99

This delightful Pecorino displays exactly why the indigenous Italian white grapes provide such a fantastic value when it comes to crowd-pleasing versatility. First floral, especially redolent of acacia and apricot blossom, it then segues into ripe peach and apples on the palate with an engaging juxtaposition of acidity and a slight honeyed character. Perfect for hard cheeses and aperitif drinking.

2014 Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino
Top Pick!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Tenuta di Sesta 2014 Brunello di Montalcino opens to an evolved appearance that showcases dark garnet saturation. However, this expression is also thicker and slightly more concentrated compared to many of its peers in this vintage. In 2014, the wines are lighter, generally speaking. You get a bright bouquet with crisp aromas of wild berry, blue flower and spice. The thinness of the vintage is apparent to the palate. This is a compact and streamlined Brunello with medium length. Some 30,000 bottles were made....

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus, grilled herb and nuts delicately guide the nose. Round and delicious, the medium-bodied palate delivers baked yellow apple, creamy white peach, ginger and white almond alongside tangy acidity. A juicy note of candied lemon drop lingers on the close. *Editors’ Choice* (KO)" (07/2018)

2015 Massolino Barolo
Back In Stock!
93 points James Suckling: "Very fresh and attractive Barolo with abundant red cherries and a wealth of sweet, rose-petal aromas, too. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and juicy core of fruit in the red-cherry zone. The tannins are velvety and long. One of the more approachable 2015s. " (01/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the bread-and-butter wine for the folks at Massolino, and great care is taken to make sure they get it right year after year. The 2015 Barolo is almost all fruit from Serralunga d'Alba (this township makes up...

92 points James Suckling: "Red cherry compote, dried herbs and spices. Full body, ripe and juicy tannins and a succulent finish." (07/2018)

90 points Wine Spectator: "A broad, supple version, displaying ripe plum, cherry, licorice and stony flavors. Grainy tannins shore up the finish, with an overall impression of balance and brightness. (BS)" (10/2019) Decanter: "Pleasant and complex floral aromatics. Ripe cherry fruits with an almost jammy character on the palate. (panel tasting) " (06/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "This has aromas of underbrush, charred earth, leather and a whiff of cured meat. On the linear, no-frills palate, dusty tannins accompany licorice, espresso and sour cherry. (KO)"...

95 points James Suckling: "Wow. What a nose of pure blueberries, rose petals, lavender, crushed minerals, elderflower and so much vivid orange and candied citrus peel. Full body, electric acidity, firm and wonderfully polished tannins and a long, mineral finish. Drink in 2021." (07/2018) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This opens with aromas of ripe berry, crushed herb, scorched soil and dark culinary spice. Mirroring the nose, the firm full-bodied palate evokes juicy Marasca cherry, black raspberry, star anise and clove. Taut, tightly knit and noble tanni...

This has been the #1 selling Italian wine for more than two decades at K&L! You can't get that kind of continued success without a supremely fantastic quality-to-price ratio. The southern Tuscan coast is a wonderful location for winemaking, with stable temperatures and a solid history of quality, yet no fame and fortune. Incredibly priced bargains come out of the region, and the proof is in the bottle. This wine is wonderful, soft, forward and easy-to-drink Sangiovese with an enticing mixture of cherry, plum and earth. Eminently drinkable.

Wine Enthusiast: "Honeysuckle, honeydew melon and white-peach aromas follow through to the somewhat sweet palate along with a note of glazed orange zest. Fresh acidity lifts the rich candied flavors. (KO)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: The Bronca sisters grow their own fruit on steep hillside vineyards, then make base wine and perform the secondary (sparkling) fermentation on non-vintage batches three or four times a year to ensure freshness. Low yields and hillside-grown fruit ensure that the wine has good concentration and acidity. This one's a clean, crisp a...

2017 Cantina Andrian Trentino-Alto Adige Pinot Grigio
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "This is a stunning Pinot Grigio for the difficult vintage with a ton of ripe melon, candied orange and just a hint of raisin bread. Ripe, concentrated and mouth-filling, but beautifully balanced with a very long finish that’s deep and lively." (11/2018)

94 points James Suckling: "This is a fantastic white with sliced apple and lemon as well as flint. Full body. Rich and flavorful but shows delicious acidity. You want to finish the bottle yourself. Drink now. Screw cap." (10/2017) 90 points Vinous: "Bright straw. White peach, nectarine and white flowers on the enticing nose. Bright, juicy and fresh, with lipsmacking acidity nicely framing the crisp citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Very lively but harmonious acidity extends the mineral flavors nicely on the long, zesty back end. Great everyday table wi...

92 points James Suckling: "A pretty, refined red with floral, citrus and plum aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. Drink now and enjoy." (11/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "Plum-cake, French oak, rose and leather aromas lift out of the glass. The oak aroma carries over to the palate, along with dried cherry, licorice and espresso. It's rather austere, with tight close-grained tannins that grip the finish. (KO)" (03/2019)

Abbazia is a monastery founded in 1142 by the Augustinian Order of Canons Regular and which produces a range of white and red wines from both estate vineyards at the abbey and from smaller growers near the town of Novacella in the Isarco River Valley. White grapes are grown at the abbey and red grapes such as Schiava, Pinot Noir and Lagrein come from near Lago di Caldaro and the town of Bolzano. According to the winery, the Schiava is "Bright pale ruby, fruity on the nose, with aromas reminiscent of summer fruits and cherry; succulent, gentle and fruity ...

96 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried fruit, mushrooms, violets and roses. Full body, very fine tannins and a wonderful finish. Shows so much intensity and clarity. Gorgeous red. Drink or hold. " (12/2018) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Thanks to that dark garnet hue, you recognize this as Brunello just as soon as this beautiful wine pours from the bottle. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Duelecci Est showcases that sultry and sophisticated appearance that you get with Sangiovese that has been expertly aged for six long years. The ...

94 points Vinous: "Inky-purple. Captivating, broad brushstrokes of tar and licorice complicate aromas and flavors of dark plums, black cherry and cassis. Very clean, vibrant, dense Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that boasts lingering floral and mineral elements on the juicy finish. The best Italian release of Emidio Pepe’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in a long time (this wine is made from younger vines than the Old Vines selections available in the US). Really well done. (ID)" (09/2018) K&L Notes: *Natural Wine*

2016 La Monacesca "Mirum" Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: " A complex, quite flinty verdicchio with a ton of citrus fruit and pears and a rather succulent but not heavy palate. In fact, the finish has a nice lightness of touch and some real finesse. Drink now." (08/2018) K&L Notes: The Matelica region of the Marche is one of the most unique growing zones in all of Italy; it is a north-south valley in the middle of the Apennine mountain range that once was a salt lake. The orientation of the valley closes it off from the warm coastal waters (the opposite of the west coast of the US) a...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mature berry, sunbaked earth, underbrush and eucalyptus aromas lift out of the glass along with whiffs of clove. On the full-bodied palate, taut, polished tannins support fleshy black cherry, ripe cranberry and a hint of dried herbs. (KO)" (07/2019) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "id ruby. Very mineral and brooding with an undertow of ripe fruit. Plenty of concentrated, ripe cherry and strawberry fruit and muscular yet finely built tannins. Long, firm finish that is elegant at the same time. Could do with a little more age. (WS)...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rich, fruity and enticing, this sweet vermouth is warmed with notes of fig and dried cherries, and just faint hints of spiced gingerbread and bitter orange peel. Drinkable solo as an apéritif, or use it as a cocktail-mixing favorite. (KN)" (04/2014) K&L Notes: Carpano's Antica Formula, from the original recipe developed by Antonio Benedetto Carpano in 1786, is a sweet vermouth of the highest quality. This distinctive and powerful aromatized wine should be considered a standard component in any respectable bar. It can be serv...

2015 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
Top Pick!
97 points James Suckling: "This understated Brunello delivers dried cherries, cumin, terracotta, rust and bark. The full-bodied palate presents an intricately detailed tapestry of finely interwoven tannins, interspersed with compressed, vibrant cherries and gilded in colorful, gleaming acidity. The finish is vivacious and polished and very long. Drink in 2024." (09/2019)

90 points James Suckling: "A very pretty and fruity barbera with flavors of cherries and raspberries, as well as a hint of vanilla highlighting the medium body. Fresh acidity, too. A delicious wine. Drink now. " (06/2018) K&L Notes: The Barbera grapes for this wine were grown in vineyards dating back to the early 19th century. It's a vibrant ruby red in the glass with a dry, full body. Thanks to the long growing season in this northern part of Italy, the wine develops gorgeous acid that makes it a perfect accompaniment to roasted and braised meats.

95 points James Suckling: " Love the dried-flower and pie-crust aromas to the sliced-apple character. Full body. Very fruity and vivid. Flavorful finish. Excellent. This will change your mind about Pinot Bianco. Drink now. " (04/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I admit that after I tasted this wine for work, I brought the remnants of the bottle up to my Roman terrace (on one of the first warm days of early spring) and polished off the rest of the bottle with friends. The 2016 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is just that k...

91 points James Suckling: "A pretty sangiovese with red cherries and cedar. Medium body, fine tannins and a fruity finish. Drink now." (07/2018) K&L Notes: Founded by Mauro Pacini in 1983, Fattoria Lecciaia is an estate that combines traditional practices with modern technology. Located in the Vallafrico area, bordering the oldest and most prestigious vineyards of Montalcino, the estate extends over 60 hectares with vineyards, olive trees and oak trees, with 15 hectares dedicated to the Sangiovese Grosso grape which produces Brunello di Montalcino.

2016 Sesta di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino
Back In Stock!
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The folks at Sesta di Sopra are releasing this wine later than usual. The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino (with 8,400 bottles made) is a terrific expression that acts and tastes like a full-fledged Brunello. The wine opens slowly in the glass, revealing budding complexity as it does. It shows bright berry intensity with grilled herb, pressed violet and potting soil. The mid-weight finish is elegant and tight. (ML) 90+" (02/2019)

Tenuta La Fortuna's Fortunello bottling is 100% Sangiovese grown in Tuscany. Vintages are aged for four months in French oak barrels and typically show aromas of raspberries and cherries, with deep chocolaty tones lingering on the finish. This tastes significantly more expensive than it is!

2015 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva
Top Pick!
96 points James Suckling: "Aromas of plums, cherries and hints of green olives. White truffles and deep earth, too. Full-bodied, so layered and beautiful with a fabulous texture and ripe tannins. It is so pure and minimalist in the end, showing the effect of traditional, hands-off winemaking. Don’t miss this. Decant before serving. One for the cellar. " (01/2019) 94 points Decanter: "Castello di Monsanto is in a warm pocket but the vineyards are well-ventilated by sea breezes and temperatures fall sharply at night. The Bianchi family uses autochthonous...

92 points Vinous: "Deep ruby-red. Very perfumed aromatic nose of sweet spices, red cherry and blueberry. Suave and polished, with a multilayered quality to the fruit and mineral flavors present. Closes long and floral with a welcome nuance of ripeness. (ID)" (08/2019) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Graphite and baking spice aromas wind through rich and ripe boysenberry coulis flavors in this fresh and well-knit red. Medium- to full-bodied and elegant, with fine tannins and accents of brown bread and tangy, iron-laced mineral. (AN)" (10/2019)

Dario Ermacora was one of our first Italian direct imports. His wines have always been textbook, classic, and archetypal for Friulian whites: understated, balanced, with a long finish. His winery is in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, or the Eastern Hills of Friuli, a few scant kilometers from the Slovenian border. Most of Friuli is a flat, glaciated plain running from the Julian Alps down to the top of the Adriatic Sea, but on the eastern border the topography changes. In the Colli Orientali a series of horseshoe-shaped glacial moraines dot the landscape...

98 points James Suckling: "Extremely perfumed, showing lots of rose, lavender and dark-berry character. Full body with intense density and chewiness that gives the wine great structure. Lots of flavor and focus at the finish. Needs five to six years to finish. Drink in 2024." (01/2019) 97 points Vinous: "The 2015 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is ample, full-bodied and rich on the palate, and yet retains its explosive floral lift and brightness, two of the signatures that are such calling cards of Barolos from this Monforte site. A rush of sweet red cherry, ...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Delicately scented, this elegant white offers enticing aromas of orchard fruit, alpine herb and a whiff of wet stone. Polished and fresh, the palate doles out creamy yellow pear, ripe apple and almond while a hazelnut note lingers on the finish. KO" (08/2019)

2013 Bersano "Mantico" Barbaresco
Top Pick!
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Subtle aromas of leafy underbrush, leather, truffle and red berry come together on this while the full-bodied palate delivers juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, baking spice and grilled herb. Chewy tannins provide the framework while a note of star anise closes the finish. (KO)" (10/2016) 90 points James Suckling: "This shows delicate aromas of rosemary with red licorice and dried berries. This is delicate and light-bodied with almost no tannins, good freshness and a nice, fruity finish. Really enjoyable." (11/2016)
