A perennial best value in Spanish Monastrell (Mourvedre), the Altos de la Hoya bottling typically has some Garnacha blended in as well. Pre-phylloxera vines, planted to limestone soils in the cooler area of the D.O. yield grapes which are carefully harvested and respectfully vinified and aged to create this delicious value red.
Price: $11.99

Produced from old vines (smaller grapes) the resulting wines are full and flavorful. When drunk young, the flavors of this wine are: Liquorice, morello cherry and blackcurrant; and after 10 years of good keeping they have the aromas of leather, undergrowth, liquorice, truffles, venison.

2014 Château Pradeaux Bandol
Back In Stock!
From the importer: "There is the appellation of Bandol with its plethora of producers, some good, some mediocre; and then there is Château Pradeaux, the unique, inimitable, standard-bearer for this ancient wine-growing district. The Château Pradeaux is situated on the outskirts of the town of Saint Cyr-sur-Mer that lies directly on the Mediterranean Ocean between Toulon and Marseilles. The estate has been in the hands of the Portalis family since before the French Revolution. In fact, Jean-Marie-Etienne Portalis, who inherited the estate in 1752, helped ...

Agnes Cade and her father, Henri Gaussen, cultivate the 14 sunny hectares of Château de la Noblesse, an estate that has been in their family for generations. Their zesty rosé is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Cinsault, and makes a great companion to spicy, saffron-infused dishes. Try it with a Spanish paella for the perfect summer meal.

The 2018 Château de la Noblesse Bandol Rosé has yet to be reviewed, but Josh Raynolds gave the 2017 vintage 90 points along with this review: "Light, vivid orange. Pungent, mineral-accented blood orange and red berry scents, with a subtle floral note in the background. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering raspberry and lavender flavors that are braced by a refreshingly bitter citrus pith note. Shows very good clarity and persistence on the finish, which leaves a dusty mineral note behind."

92 points Vinous: "The 2017 Mourvèdre Enz Vineyard is compelling. Pliant and supple, it demonstrates lovely varietal character, and the 100% whole clusters add striking aromatic lift and freshness without marking the wine too strongly. Touches of rose petal, mint and bright, red-toned fruit grace the silky yet deep finish. A rare Mourvèdre that offers quite a bit of nuance and overall dimension. This is the first wine I have tasted from Caitlin Quinn (who is also the assistant winemaker at Arnot-Roberts), and it is a beauty. (AG)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: ...

2017 Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell (Silver Label) Jumilla
90 points James Suckling: "A full-bodied red with plum, dark-berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Full body, yet shows form and structure. Drink now." (07/2019)

From Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant: "When Lucie "Lulu" Tempier married Lucien Peyraud in 1936, her father gave them Domaine Tempier, an active farm that had been in the family since 1834, near Le Plan du Castellet, just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol. Tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol (a wedding gift from his father-in-law) inspired Lucien to research the terroir of Bandol extensively. Up until that point, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been systematically replanted to higher-yielding varietals. However...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I’ve always loved the Two Acres cuvée from Officer, and his 2017 Two Acres doesn’t disappoint, although I think it’s a small step back from the 2016. Mostly Mourvèdre from deep loam and clay soils, it offers tons of smoked dark fruits, licorice, olive, and plenty of meatiness to go with a ripe, textured, sexy style on the palate." (10/2019) 90-92 points Vinous: "The Mourvèdre-based 2017 Two Acres is creamy, supple and inviting. Soft contours and silky tannins add to the wine racy personality and overall appeal. Labor Day heat sp...

Winemaker's Notes: "The Alder Springs Vineyard is located on a 6,000-acre ranch outside of Laytonville. Stuart Bewley started planting in 1990, farms organically and is working towards transitioning to biodynamics. In addition, his farm is H-2A certified for all temporary farm workers. The grapes were harvested at 23 brix. 1/4 of the grapes were left whole cluster and the rest destemmed on top. The wine was fermented until dry and then pressed to neutral French oak and aged for 7 months. We produced 5 barrels. Tasting Notes: Dusty Blackberry. Crushed sto...

Winery notes: Ron Mansfield farms this vineyard in the Apple Hill region of El Dorado, sitting at 3000ft elevation with cooler nighttime temperatures to preserve acidity. The vines are head trained on a vertical cordon and dry farmed even in the warmest of years. Foot tread and fermented 100% whole cluster this is a wine that is bottled early to be enjoyed during the Fall months. Aromatics of Asian plum sauce with hints of dried strawberry in the background lead to a palate of bright red fruit and mouthwatering acidity.

From Matt Kettmann: "Ian Brand, The SF Chronicle’s 2018 Winemaker of the Year, is quite possibly the most interesting vintner in Monterey County today. The Connecticut-raised, former Bonny Doon cellar rat and one-time assistant at Big Basin is sourcing from so many distinct, often old-vine sites, and spearheading so many different consulting projects. Though quite varied in styles and grapes, the wines are all very energetic, distinctive and extremely fairly priced."

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was also able to taste the 2012 Les Demoiselles with Stephan for this report. It’s a unique blend of 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah that was brought up in 40% new barrels. Still youthful and vibrant, it offers classic notes of ripe red and black fruits, new leather, underbrush, and ample earthy/mineral-like notions. This full-bodied, layered, beautifully texture effort has opened up beautifully since release and is drinking great today. It has at least another decade or longevity." This 100% Mourvèdre is a barrel selection of all the Dirty & Rowdy vineyards and comes from the Monterey, Mendocino, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Amador County AVAs. 99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Mourvèdre is composed of 89% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 2% Viognier coming from the Alta Mesa Vineyard in Santa Barbara County and Larner Vineyard in Ballard Canyon. Seventy percent whole cluster was employed, and the wine was aged for 21 months in French barriques, 50% new. Deep purple-black colored, it slips out of the glass with gorgeous fragrant earth, truffles and garrigue scents over a blackberry preserves and baked plums core plus nuances of chargrill and underbrush. Full-bodied, rich and seductivel...

Jeb Dunnuck writes: "Easily the most widely recognized estate in Bandol, Domaine Tempier has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Today, with the passing of Lucien Peyraud in 1996 and the retirement of sons Francois and Jean-Marie, the estate is run by the tall, energetic and talented Daniel Ravier—who speaks with a refreshing honesty and humility. Looking at the reds, the estate fashions four cuvees, a classic Bandol from a mix of terroirs, and three single vineyards—La Migoua, La Tourtine and Cabassaou. Lying outside the village of Le Beausset, t...
