The story of Monkey 47 gin is romantic: in 1951, a British man named Montgomery Collins moved to Germany's Black Forest and opened a guesthouse named "Zum wilden Affen"--the wild monkey. Now considered a renowned gin drinker, Collins's taste for the spirit was unknown until renovation work at the country guesthouse led to the discovery of a weighty old wooden box containing a bottle and a letter. The dusty bottle had been labeled and decorated by hand, showing a sketch of a monkey and the words "Max the Monkey--Schwarzwald Dry Gin." The accompanying lett...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Warm with orange and spice notes, this gin is earthy and woodsy, finishing with a hint of bitter orange peel. The pride of Australia is now available here at K&L! After sweeping Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits competition and wowing serious fans of gin around the world, Four Pillars is bringing its incredible gins from Down Under to the U.S. Utilizing "four pillars" of success (quality German copper stills, pure Yarra Valley water, unique Australian botanicals, and love, of course), the team of Aussies has created what we think are the best portfolio of high-quality, serious gins we've ever tasted. At a whopping 58.8%, the Navy Strength gin is a bold an...

Four Pillars "Faultline" K&L Exclusive Gin (750ml)
Top Pick!
When our first batch of Four Pillars Faultline Gin ran out, we were all devastated. Initially conceived as a one-off project, the FP Fautlline turned out to be one of our most popular gins ever, both among staff and our customers. After months of trying to find a substitute, we conceded that the first go around was just too good and needed to be remade to the exact same specs. The initial batch was put together by David Driscoll, K&L Buyer Emeritus, wanting to build on the clean citrus notes and the creamy texture that are the calling cards of Four Pilla...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sweet-tasting and citrusy, this has a light herbal aroma. It shows distinct cucumber and lavender notes on the palate, and it should lend itself to spring and summer cocktails. (KN)" K&L Notes: Uncle Val’s is a small-batch botanical gin inspired by Zio Valerio’s love of gardening and native Tuscan cuisine. The botanicals are not only Uncle Val’s favorite cooking ingredients, but also happen to make an exceptionally unique and smoothly delicious gin. Producer note: "Uncle Val’s presents a complex and subtly pleasing sensation ...

Fynbos is an abundant floral system unique to the South African landscape that includes over 9,000 species of plant within its natural habitat. It is from this singular botanical phenomenon that Inverroche gently and sustainably procures the botanical foundation for their gins. Not only is this a well-crafted classic gin with vibrant juniper notes, citrus edges, and aromatic complexity - it is all that and a singular distilled expression of the complex and vibrant ecosystem of Fynbos! There's just nothing else like it. Inverroche Distillery was founded ...

The exceptional Ford's Gin is one of the most versatile London Drys on the market. Distilled at the exceptional Thames Distillery by master distiller Charles Maxwell and the famous Simon Ford. They start with a base of Italian juniper and coriander seed, and the recipe is expanded thoughtfully to include bitter oranges, lemon and grapefruit peel. Subtle jasmine and orris add a soft floral quality, while spicy angelica root and cassia bark give it some structure. I've always noted a smidge of cucumber, but the distiller won't cop to it. Anyway, the mixtur...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot-still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Anise leads the mild aroma of this unusual gin made with 'Californian botanicals,' including Baja limes, fir tree, sea kelp, mint and almonds. The palate is slick and slightly viscous, with a lemony, faintly saline note that winds into a brisk, cooling finish that suggests an ocean breeze. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: This new uniquely Californian gin is the brainchild of chef and culinary TV personality Marsh Mohktari. He set out to make a one-of-a kind London Dry style gin that exhibited the wonderful bounties of the great S...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp and classic, this gin is ideal for martinis. A light cucumber aroma leads the nose, opening up with more cucumber and juniper on the palate, finishing smooth and brisk on nutmeg and coriander accents. (KN)" (08/2016) K&L Notes: Miller's Gin is handcrafted and made in very small batches. It's then transported by ship to Iceland. It took a year longer than they thought it would, but after labeling conflicts with the TTB and a bit of arguing over what exactly the Bloody Shiraz gin was (a liqueur? a sloe gin?), they finally settled on "flavored" and got the darn bottles onto American soil. The name "Piùcinque", which means "plus five" in Italian, comes from the first recipe that was used to create this gin. Once the balance of the ten botanicals were defined, the next task was to work on their intensity. As the team was analyzing different combinations, they only found one with the perfect alchemy. This bottle was tagged by the master distiller with the wording "plus five" (as there was a greater intensity of five of the ten botanicals) and from this the name Piùcinque was naturally born. The flavors of sage, bergamot, and ginger are what ...

Yet somehow, it all comes together: the opening salvo is spicy and bold with anise, pepper, and clove, before moving to a waxy lemon peel and juniper midpalate and finishing dry and dusty with suggestions of cocoa powder, coriander, and spicy grains of paradise. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Distilled from corn and finished with raw honey, this barrel-aged bottling is billed as a “modern day adaptation of Old Tom Gin,” a sweetened style. It has a burnished rose gold hue and the scent mingles honey and juniper. It's slightly sweet up front, with brisk pininess midpalate before it fades into vanilla and a surprising brush of peach. (KN)" (08/2015) K&L Notes: The Tom Cat Gin is one of the best barrel aged gins we have ever carried. The gin is pure, elegant and focused. Made with a single botanical -- juniper -- and...

This is NOT a rosé gin. It is a rose gin - as in the Irish rose. It's naturally colored and it's NOT sweet. You may have seen the disgusting "pink gins" out there jammed with artificial flavors, sweeteners, and color, but get that out of your mind. This is the real deal. The gin starts out as the Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin and then a variety of freshly picked rose petals ranging from the Wild Irish Rose to large fragrant Heritage Roses and the ancient prized Damask Rose all come together in the still and afterwards in a maceration to make this natura...

This smooth and well-balanced gin is a good choice for making a berry-forward cocktail like the classic bramble. (KN)" (04/2013) K&L Notes: Eleventh-generation heirs Carl Jr. and Bob Nolet collaborated with their father, Carolus Nolet Sr., to create a fresh take on gin that appeals to a new generation of gin drinkers. Wine Enthusiast: "One of a trio of new gins from this artisan distiller, this gin's claim to fame is that it was inspired by a hike on Mt. Tam, and the distiller describes it as akin to 'drinking a martini in a pine forest.' Some will find the juniper essence too strong, although it also reads as clean and bracing, and it's laced with a peppery finish. Botanicals include Douglas fir, fennel, bay laurel and sage. A portion of the profits from the gin are donated to support California wilderness. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: Distiller's notes: "An ode to t...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The 20th anniversary of this robust spirit, the first craft gin distilled in the U.S. after Prohibition was in 2016. The aroma mingles juniper and citrus; the palate also shows plenty of lemon curd sweetness and peppery spice (cubeb, grains of paradise, pink peppercorn), finishing spicy with white peppercorn and coriander seed. It is 'foraged from what grows in the mountains,' says the producer of this Irish gin's botanicals. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: This incredible Irish gin is a true terroir-driven product. They have a full-time forager (actually out foraging every day) and everything they pick goes into the still fresh, not dried. The result is a sustainable and intensely flavored gin. Look for the trademark faint yellowish-saffron tinge and herbal scent, with assertive pine and anise flavors and a tart lemony touch. Serve this overproof gin tamed with ice and lots of tonic. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: Old Raj Gin is distinctive in that it contains a measure of saffron, the rare and costly spice derived from the crocus flower. The recipe for Gothic gin was created and inspired by the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, Spain. All of the botanicals are handpicked and sourced from the finest organically grown sources. While there is a strong juniper backbone, the gin really showcases an amazing texture and creative selection of botanicals. There is a slight menthol characteristic and a spicy background of peppercorn. The texture is sublime. It's a wonder in a Martini, but equally at home in a G&T or Negroni. Don't be afraid to use this gin liberally, it mixes great. In fact, it's the q...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer describes this gin made from raw honey as “dancing the line between an Old Tom and a London Dry style.” We'd say it edges closer to Old-Tom gins, thanks to its surprising sweetness and understated juniper. Look for notes of candied lemon peel, vanilla, white pepper, and a whisper of spicy cinnamon. A touch viscous, it's unusually mouth coating for a gin. Mahon, like Plymouth, is one of the few gins to have a geopgraphical designation. Gin de Mahon is made on the island of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands which can be found to the East of the Spanish peninsula, and has been in production there since the 18th century. It can only be made from two ingredients: juniper and alcohol. For that reason, the Xoriguer gin is one of the purest juniper flavored gins available. By the 20th century, a number of brands began to emerge such as Xoriguer, increasing the popularity of the gin across all of the Balearic ...

Gin was first made by Bordiga in 1889, and this gin is made from the original recipe. Only four main botanical flavors are used, some from the Occitan Alps, hence the name. The four are angelica, juniper, cardamom and a secret ingredient (with traces of orange and lemon peel). Occitan Gin has traditionally been made exclusively from juniper that grows wild (not cultivated) in the Maritime Alps, near Cuneo, which are some of the highest mountains in Europe. This combination of altitude and maritime influence enriches the essential oils of the juniper berr...

We just picked up an exciting new local distiller called Venus Spirits, located in nearby Santa Cruz. Sean Venus has taken over the old Sarticious space and installed his own 600 liter Spanish alembic still to make a number of interesting concoctions. It's a snappy, fresh, citrus-oriented spirit at a very good price point. The creaminess of the gin is quite lovely and the lavender comes strong on the finish. 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This gin has a fierce following, in part because of its quirky brand personality (see the Monty Python-esque website) and aggressive marketing among bartenders. But it lives up to the hype.
