95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Backward, powerful, and extremely tannic, the dense purple-colored 2003 Mouton-Rothschild, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, fashioned from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, with a finished alcohol of 12.9%, improves dramatically with aeration. With full-bodied, meaty, powerful, dry flavors as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest between 2012-2040+. During its sojourn in barrel, it reminded me of a hypothetical blend of the 19...

100 points James Suckling: "This is an extraordinary Champagne with super density and richness, yet it’s so formed and fresh. Full-bodied with layers and layers of fruit. It’s sort of a beast! But absolutely fascinating and hard to describe. Mind-blowing! Purity and chic. This was a tiny crop of one third from this one-hectare vintage. 1,000 bottles made. Drink or hold." (12/2020)

95 points James Suckling: "I might have a slight preference for this over the 2001 but I can’t make up my mind yet. It seems to have more richness and sweetness, with loads of apple tart, caramel and spice character. The noble rot certainly did its good here. Long, long finish. Beautiful sweet wine. Drink or hold." (07/2013) 95 points Wine Spectator: "This is very sweet and rich on the nose, with toffee, honey and spices. Full-bodied, with thick honey, spice, dried apricot and syrup flavors. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Big botrytis bomb. Love it. ...

94 points John Gilman: "I had some very fine examples of the 2003 German vintage on this trip (in the spring of 2013) and the ’03 Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese was one of the best. The deep, ripe and complex nose offers up a very stylish bouquet of pineapple, pear, orange zest, honeycomb, slate and a nice touch of Chartreuse-like botanicals in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bdoied, complex and just starting to blossom with secondary elements, with a fien core, lovely focus and balance and a long, quite crisp (particularly for ...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is one of the most exciting projects of winemaking consultant Mark Herold. Unfortunately, only 325 cases of the 2003 were produced, and there will probably be even less of the 2004. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was superb from cask, is even more spectacular from bottle. Its dense, opaque black/purple color is accompanied by scents of graphite interwoven with creme de cassis, charcoal, espresso roast, and spice box. This layered, full-bodied, elegant effort possesses wonderful purity as well as definiti...

96 points Wine Spectator: "Loads of honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and spice. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with a refined, spicy character. Pretty wine. Masses of botrytis. This is refined and long, a racy wine compared with the power and muscle of so many others. Beauty among the beasts. (JS)" (03/2006) 93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of dried mushroom. Full body, bright acidity and a volatile undertone. Some spice. Not showing right at first but then opens into a pretty fresh and spicy Sauternes. " (03/2016) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's Internatio...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Il Poggione selects its Brunello from vines that are at least 20 years old, when they've rooted deeply through the subsoil and can weather the intense heat of a vintage like 2003. This brooding wine is all muscle when first poured, with powerful tannins supporting rich plum flavor. It reveals more definition with air, the fruit aspect turning redder (strawberries, cherries) even as the sinewy tannins maintain their firm grip. Classically styled, with immense structure supporting its many layers, this wine will continue to devel...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The estate's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a lovely, pure effort redolent of dark plums, cherries, spices and leather. The tannins are well-integrated, and this medium to full-bodied wine has plenty of density and length to allow for another decade of pleasurable drinking. It is an outstanding effort from La Poderina and oenologist Lorenzo Landi. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018.I continue to be impressed with the wines of La Poderina, which is located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate." (04/08)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Montrose was served blind in Bordeaux on two occasions. Picked between 11 to 26 September, it is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It remains one of the outstanding wines of a very black and white vintage. Without knowledge of the vintage, I was hesitant to suggest 2003, because though there is clearly fruit intensity locked up inside this Saint Estèphe, it is counterbalanced by the estate's trademark masculinity and austerity. So both on the nose and t...

97 points James Suckling: "This controversial wine is fresh and bright still, unlike many of the overrated 2003s. Full-bodied, tight and polished with beautiful intensity and verve. Blackberry and sweet tobacco. Wet earth. Subtle and complex. Straight and direct." (03/2018) 97 points Wine Spectator: "This is a stunner, with the warmth of the vintage marrying ideally with the relative coolness of the terroir to deliver a wide range of vivid plum, boysenberry, raspberry and cherry paste flavors that have energy and drive, carried by a long graphite note ...

2003 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Top Pick!
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2003 was showing spectacularly well, and based on my recollection, I think I may have liked it even more than the 2002, which is the reverse of how I felt a decade ago. One of the biggest (14.6% alcohol) wines made by Screaming Eagle during this period, it boasts an opaque ruby/purple color as well as classic, pure, creme de cassis, cedarwood and hints of Asian soy sauce and forest floor notes. The multidimensional aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, silky-textured, opulent, rich, atypically big wine th...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Riesling Zöbinger Ried Heiligenstein is one of the most fascinating wines I have ever tasted from Willi Bründlmayer. The grapes went through hell in summer 2003, and although they were ripe by the end of September, they were not picked until the end of October in the snow at zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). The resulting wine is full of finesse on the nose. Bottled with 15% alcohol, the wine opens pure, fresh, very delicate and complex, with the obligatory flinty, herbal and coolish yet ripe...

95 points Wine Spectator: "Very clean and focused, with an intensity that belies its delicate profile. Wonderful aromas and flavors of apricot, flowers and slate, with pinpoint balance and a long, almost salty aftertaste. Deceptive and completely disarming in its appeal. Drink now through 2030. *Collectibles* (BS)" (03/2005) 94 points John Gilman: "This 2003 Goldkapsel Auslese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, AP #9, spent three and a half to four years in tank prior to its bottling in 2007. This is a beautiful wine, showing more complexity and refinement t...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Lots of grapey character, with prunes. Follows through to a full-bodied palate, with very sweet fruit and a plummy finish. Soft and round. (JS)" (04/2006)
Price: $59.99

93 points Vinous: "Bright yellow. Aromas of pineapple, rosemary and nutmeg, with some fresh veggie nuances. Large-scaled, plush and densely packed; a very concentrated, tactile, bone-dry wine with terrific breadth and seamless texture, but much more about powdered and wet-stone minerality than fruit in the mouth. Finishes saline and bone-dry. I would have guessed this wine was higher in alcohol but it's not at all tired, despite possessing barely three grams per liter of acidity. No one will ever describe this powerful wine as classic Clos and yet there'...

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 Mas Doix Salanques, Priorat (OWC - 95RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 700 cases of the second wine, the 2003 Salanques, a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 20% Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. It is hard to believe this dazzling effort is made from declassified juice. The stunningly perfumed bouquet of raspberries and blackberries is followed by an elegant, medium to full-bodied, complex, nuanced wine with tremendous purity as well as a multilayered mid-palate and finish. Sweet tannin, fine acidity, and undeniable minerality suggest it will provide enjoyment now and over the next 10-12 years. Situated in the Priorat village of Poboleda, this winery continues to immensely impress. (RP)" (06/2005)
Starting Bid: $191.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (94RP, 92VN, 92W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the smallest crops to be included in the Ridge Monte Bello, only 32% of the production made it into the 2003, which is largely Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. Out of barrel as well as post-bottling I liked this wine a lot, and it has changed very little from when I last tasted it in February, 2010. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with sweet black currant, blueberry, graphite, licorice and toasty vanillin aromas. The tannins are still noticeable in this full-bodied 2003, but seem reasonably well-integrated. Forget this wine for another decade and drink it over the following 30+ years. (RP) 94+" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $250.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Marcassin "Blue Slide Ridge" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (98RP, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Note from 2007 review, re-reviewed with no new note in 2008) The utterly profound 2003 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge is a candidate for one of California’s greatest Pinot Noirs. A full-bodied beauty, it offers up aromas of plums, anise, forest floor, black and blue fruits, and gamy, sweet, aged beef. With unreal complexity, in addition to superb texture, purity, and definition, this is a tour de force in winemaking that confirms the brilliance of this husband and wife team who recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. (RP)" (12/2008)
Starting Bid: $170.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (98WS, 96JD, 96RP, 93DC). Wine Spectator: "Intense blackberry and cherry, with hints of currant. Toasted oak and sweet tobacco too. Roses and other flowers, such as lilacs. Full-bodied, with masses of tannins yet incredibly long and seductive. *#3 2006 Top 100 Wines, Collectibles* (JS)" (03/2006)
Starting Bid: $280.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Domaine Henri Perrot-Minot Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (96WS, 93ST). Wine Spectator: "A sumptuous, powerful red, with plenty of mineral and earth tones alongside the blackberry and cassis notes. Firmly tannic, with a freshness and balance among the elements, this should develop well over the long term. Be patient, it's a monster now. (BS)" (09/2005)
Starting Bid: $120.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée "La Colombière" (92RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced from 60-70-year old vines, the 2003 Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere displays a boisterous nose of red cherries and spices. Medium to full-bodied, intense, and succulent, this admirable wine exhibits a rich, ample personality redolent of candied red cherries as well as raspberries. Opulent yet focused, its character seamlessly lingers for 30 seconds or more in its lush, sweet finish. (PR)" (08/2005)
Starting Bid: $420.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Sloan Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (96RP, 94WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 was made by Martha McClellan and the viticulture looked over by David Abreu. The 2003 Sloan, if slightly less prodigious than the perfect 2002, remains a young wine. Notes of vanillin, espresso roast, blackberries, scorched earth, camphor and hints of charcoal and barbecue meat jump from the glass of this spicy, rich, provocative Cabernet Sauvignon. With a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and adequate acidity, the blend includes 14% Cabernet Franc and 86% Cabernet Sauvignon from this extraordinary hillside vineyard above Auberge de Soleil in mid-Napa Valley. This wine is 2-5 years away from full maturity, and should last for another decade. (RP) 96+" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $175.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Schrader "Beckstoffer To Kalon" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The most backward of this quartet appears to be the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Schrader Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard. With great richness, power and intensity as well as lots of blackberry, creme de cassis, coffee and chocolaty notes, an exuberant fragrance, a certain sensuality and sexiness despite its massive richness and full-bodied, broodingly backward style; this killer Cabernet needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years. It should be drunk over the following two decades. (RP)" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $271.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (95JS, 95RP, 94JD, 94WE, 93ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this spectacular 2003 hits all the sweet spots on the palate. A glorious bouquet of cedarwood, jammy black currants, cherries, licorice and truffle is followed by a dense, opulently textured, full-bodied wine with terrific purity and freshness as well as deep, velvety textured tannins. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 3L-bottle of 2003 Robert Foley Napa Valley Claret (3L) (etched & signed bottle) (OWC - 96RP, 96WE, 95WS, 94ST) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The top wine here is the classic 2003 Claret, a gorgeously proportioned, opaque purple-colored effort boasting a big, sweet nose of smoky meats, creme de cassis, coffee, and dark plums. Dense and opulent, with superb concentration, full body, high glycerin, decent acidity, and ripe tannin, this a superb mouthful of wine that can be approached now or cellared for 12-15 years. (RP)" (12/2005)
Starting Bid: $320.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Lascombes, Margaux (94RP, 91ST, 91WS, 90JS, 90W&S, 90WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This sumptuous, rich, complex Margaux reveals a fragrant nose of cedarwood, spring flowers, spice box, black currants and earth. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannins and a dense, plum/ruby/purple color. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Schrader "Beckstoffer To Kalon - RBS" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (97RP, 92WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The closest to full maturity and farthest along in its evolution appears to be the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To- Kalon Vineyard. Notes of pen ink, creosote, tar, black currants and Christmas fruitcake jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored effort, which is showing less color saturation than its three siblings. Full-bodied and ripe with soft tannins, good freshness and liveliness, there is no reason to defer your gratification. It is an intense, mouthfilling, terrific, young Cabernet Sauvignon that should continue to drink well for 10-15 years. (RP)" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $451.00

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2003 Paloma Napa Valley Merlot (90WS). Wine Spectator: "Impeccably balanced, with rich, vibrant, intense currant, fresh earth, black cherry and blackberry fruit that's well-focused. The tannins and cedary nutmeg-laced oak add a firm edge on the finish. Best to cellar short-term or decant. (JL)" (12/2005)
Starting Bid: $120.00

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Favia "Cerro Sur" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (95RP, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Cerro Sur is primarily Cabernet Franc blended with some Cabernet Sauvignon. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a complex nose of blue and red fruits, graphite, lavender and spring flowers. This highly complex, aromatic, rich, medium to full-bodied 2003 is a showcase for the brilliance of Cabernet Franc grown in Napa. It stands as a beacon to those who are bullish about this grape’s potential. Approachable now, it should continue to drink well for a decade. (RP)" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $80.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Latour, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, (96-98WE), 98WS, 97ST, 97VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Administrator Frederic Engerer says the 2003 is 'the sexiest Latour ever made.' He also described it as 'the 1990 without any brettanomyces.' I loved this wine from the barrel and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a small quantity, enjoying every bottle I have had. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. Dense, thick and unctuously textured, this staggering Latour is undeniably the most sumptuous, opulent wine made here since the 1982 or 1961. Drink it over the next two decades. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (98RP, 98WE, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most backward yet promising wines of the vintage is the 2003 Harlan Estate. Its dense opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of graphite, camphor, creme de cassis, smoky barbecue wood and a hint of forest floor. Similar flavors hit the mouth with full-bodied splendor, a multidimensional mouthfeel and texture, and the sensational finish lasts more than 45 seconds. (RP) 98+" (06/2013)
Starting Bid: $555.00
