The Willett Distilling Company, which has been family owned and operated since 1935, is now the home of Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, Ltd. The Pot Still Reserve is KBD's flagship single barrel product, and while it doesn't carry an age statement, it is of the highest quality. Because it is bottled in single barrel format, the precise flavors change from cask to cask. However, the general style of this bourbon, despite the single cask nature, is one of great elegance. It is bottled in a lovely glass pot still decanter. A very graceful bourbon. It's very su...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Though it needs a little coaxing, this small-batch Bourbon is a fitting tribute to the four Bowman brothers, Virginia militia officers in the Revolutionary War. Give it some time and a splash of ice water, and the aromas and flavors open up. Look for sweet notes of almond, cocoa and caramel, plus the clove and nutmeg notes that build on the finish." K&L Notes: Distilled three times on a pot still like an Irish whiskey, Bowman Distillery in Virginia has been quietly churning out elegant Bourbon whiskey for years. Purchased by ...

Whisky Advocate: "Finished 2 years in Quady Black Muscat barrels. Deep amber, ruby hues. Richly sweet, with raspberry preserve, pipe tobacco, dark chocolate, prune, honeysuckle, vanilla, and black tea. Dry leather finish cuts through the sweetness. Unique and peculiar. (JH, Spring 2017)" Wine Enthusiast: "Made with a blend of straight Bourbons, this whiskey has a mild vanilla and resin scent. On the palate, flavors run to vanilla, cedar and citrus. Adding water brings out distinct cinnamon and peach notes, before fading into vanilla. (KN)" (07/2015) K...

90 points Whisky Advocate: "While the nose showcases primarily grain aromas, including cracked corn and peanut shell, it also has notes of white pepper, dark cherries, brown sugar, and Hershey’s chocolate syrup—a harbinger of things to come. The palate is a chocolate lover’s dream, rich and tantalizing without heaviness. There’s also mint, cinnamon, cashew butter, and well-integrated oak; time and water bring out sweet orange. It finishes with milk chocolate, toasted nuts, and lingering cinnamon. (SSB, Fall 2020)" K&L Notes: A.H. Hirsch is a legendary n...

Old Forester's well regarded BIB is an ironic modern day recreation of the whisky the founder George Garvin Brown fought so hard to keep from being legal. Nonetheless, the passage of the bottled in bond in 1897 encourage Brown to raise the proof of his special whisky to 100 proof to avoid unnecessary taxation. This is a re-imagining of the whiskey from that tumultuous period.

Bond & Lillard was a trusted name in the pre-Prohibition whiskey industry. Distilled and bottled and at the Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY, this Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is aged a minimum of seven years in timber warehouses and is charcoal filtered. This filtration process simulates the aeration process that happens in the barrel, converting more aggressive congeners to esters that end in more elegant top notes. The result is a lighter colored and flavored bourbon with more floral notes. As the judges at the 1904 World’s Fair decla...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A collaboration between iconic heavy metal band Metallica and the late Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, this is a blend of American whiskeys, on average aged about seven years, and finished with sonic aging in ex-brandy barrels—yes, that means Metallica’s music was played to the whiskey. Look for bold honey, vanilla and golden raisin, drying into a spicy, slightly fiery black pepper and clove finish." K&L Notes: This was one of Dave Pickerel's final whiskey projects and Metallica's first. It began with a commitment from the b...

The Woodford Reserve 146th Derby bottle features the work of Louisville artist Richard Sullivan, a former Atlanta Braves baseball player. Sullivan’s stunning watercolor image is of thoroughbreds as they thunder toward the finish line, with the famed Twin Spires of Churchill Downs in the background. Will this become the most sought after Derby bottle ever? It probably depends on whether or not the rescheduled race is actually run on September 5th or not. Even if it does...

Whisky Advocate: "An aroma you can really chew on, this comes at you big and bold, its dried cherry, fig, and caramel flavors woven with pipe tobacco, licorice, and saddle leather. The jolt of sweetness and spice on the palate pour on and on. Water helps to temper the heat and release even more flavors, with currant, chocolate, and drying oak on the finish. Sourced Indiana bourbon finished in oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximenez, and Cognac casks. (JL, Summer 2018)" K&L Notes: The ultra limited-release bourbon from the Washington D.C. craft distillery that's b...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made using barrels from three different warehouses, a throwback to a pre-1870 blending technique intended to ensure consistency, this is a surprisingly light and delicate Bourbon. The aroma evokes coconut, plus a surprising floral note. The palate also shows coconut, spice, dried apricot and vanilla. Sip or mix. (KN)" (07/2015) K&L Notes: From Old Forester: "In 1870 George Garvin Brown created Old Forester on Louisville, KY’s, famous Whiskey Row. In honor of that milestone year in bourbon history, we have crafted a tribute –...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: " The bouquet has a dry, grainy aroma which is accented by peppery/spicy scents. The palate entry is surprisingly sweet and corny, considering how dry the aroma is; the midpalate point is deep, corny sweet, sap-like and a bit syrupy. Ends up well and balanced, with a backnote of dried red fruit (raisins, prunes). *Superb/Highly Recommended* " (12/2007) K&L Notes: The Michter's name has been synonymous with great whisky since the 1950s. While the famous whiskey is no longer distilled at the Schaefferstown Distillery in Penn...

Splash in ginger ale for a highball and sip all night long. *Best Buy* (KN)" (07/2015) Whisky Advocate: "Interesting that the label says 'Artfully Aged,' yet there’s no actual age statement. Jacob and Abner Taub were whisky makers and bootlegged during Prohibition. They ended up getting caught transporting flavoring elements that were deeming to be part of the whisky making process. The bootlegging charge landed the brothers behind bars. Six years later, Franklin D. Roosevelt pardoned the Taub brothers. They were able to reignite their family business with their brother Martin and help launch Baltimore Club brand whiskey. Now the new generation of the Taub family is at it again. The first release of Jacob's Pardon is a blend of 15 year old A...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Nice bouquet that includes defined aromas of buttered corn-on-the-cob, sawdust, freshly sawed pine, cedar, baking spices and dried fruit. Entry is vividly spirited and potent but not harsh or overpowering; the midpalate highlights corn meal, breakfast cereal, orange rind, dark chocolate and toffee. Sophisticated, yet powerful and assertive. *Best Buy*" (12/2008) K&L Notes: The classic Jim Beam expression - big spice, lots of cinnamon and clove notes, with great richness cutting through the high proof.

This Bourbon offers lots of fruit on the palate--orange, apricot, tropical fruit--that finish long, with caramel and a bracing burnt-orange peel note. (KN)" (09/2014) Wine Spectator: "The dry, spicy, almost austere nose has a promising note of corn, and it delivers on the palate: sweet corn, berries and apricot, a touch of leather and cinnamon, with a bright, spicy finish. According to Whiskey Advocate: "Although Louisville’s Kentucky Peerless Distillery uses sweet mash to create its rye and bourbon, Baker and Heist believe that Wilderness Trail was the first Kentucky distillery to embrace the process as the sole mashing technique. (In fact, Baker and Heist assisted Peerless in selecting their yeast strains and designing their sweet mash process.) As with clean steam, sweet mashing—rather than the practice of sour mashing, where a small amount of fermented mash is included in the following batch—is meant to produce a softe...

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a high-proof marriage of casks that brings more power and spice than some of the other more mellow WT expressions. It's woodier with more of the charred oak influence, but it handles that oak quite well. The finish leans more towards the herbaceous, but if you hang on until the end, there's a lovely toffee and caramel note that sings a late swan song. Very fun whiskey that goes down way too easily.

It's rare that wine finished bourbon actually brings something to the table. The complexity of Daviess County's underlying combination of wheat and rye mashbills gives enough of a canvas for the gentle finishing in Cabernet casks to really paint a beautiful picture of soft oak tannin and dark red fruit on top of the bourbon without overwhelming it.

After Fred Minnick placed Woodinville Bourbon 3rd in a blind tasting behind Michter’s 20 and Pappy 23, people took notice. We’ve been singing Woodinville’s praises since they launched in CA nearly two years ago and that early relationship has afforded us unprecedented access to single barrels. When barrels are made available for CA, we get the first shot at tasting them and can secure the cream of the crop. Everything that goes into the single barrel program is a standout barrel to begin with, but the two we’ve selected are superlative. Everything was go...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Finished in the barrel with specially seared oak staves, this bourbon is a new classic. In the glass, it sports a bright maple color, and lively, spicy aromas and flavors of oaky vanilla and tropical fruit touched with clove, ginger and allspice. (KN)" (07/2013) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "This is original 'red wax' Maker's Mark that received additional aging in barrels containing internal 'seared' French oak staves. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This luxurious Bourbon shows layered and dense flavors that run to the darker and drier side: cocoa, espresso, clove and allspice, all wrapped in beautiful caramel and butterscotch aromatics. At 100 proof, the alcohol deservedly feels intense, so best to temper this with a bit of branch-water or ice. *Top 50 Spirits 2013 & Best Buy* (KN)" (07/2013)

Whisky Advocate: "This bourbon is named for the Special Forces horsemen, known as the horse soldiers, who served in Afghanistan. The nose starts earthy and herbal, with notes of leather, licorice, and light smokiness. Drying oak on the palate, with bitter orange and herbal notes, roasted walnuts, and burnt cinnamon and brown sugar. A finish of orange, bitter chocolate, and espresso beans. Water coaxes out raspberry and honey blossom. (DF, Summer 2019) " K&L Notes: *96 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* An incredible story of heroism und...

Slightly drying on the palate, it offers bright butterscotch and apricot melting into caramel. Brisk and well structured, this Bourbon holds up well to dilution and would work well in mixed drinks. *Best Buys* (KN)" (11/2015) K&L Notes: The beast is awakening! A new Kentucky sourced NDP with some solid juice and a film industry themed package. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aged for eight years--twice as long as regular Jim Beam--this Bourbon offers rich caramel aroma and flavor. Though it's a little fiery from the first sip, moderating the heat with water brings out a saline lick that makes for a salted caramel impression, fading to vanilla on the long finish. *Best Buy* (KN)" (07/2015)

Whisky Advocate: "Plenty of color, and the nose says it ain’t lying. Sharp warehouse oak aroma puts an edge on an authoritative nose of honey, Indian pudding, spicy hard candy, and old-fashioned root beer, the not-too-sugary kind. Fiery and bold on the tongue as oak roars from start to finish, but the sweetness builds sip-by-sip: cornbread, buckwheat honey, King syrup, and a teasy bit of citrus peel. Long finish as the oak dies down. At this price, let’s keep it our secret. Sourced whiskey. (LB, Fall 2015) " K&L Notes: Made by Kentucky Bourbon Distiller...
