2017 Field Recordings "PETS" Paso Robles Petite Sirah

Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

2017 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

Located in the Mendocino appellation of Yorkville Highlands, Halcón overlooks Anderson Valley and the Pacific beyond. It's one of the highest vineyards in California. 2015 Odonata "Machado Creek Vineyard" Santa Clara Valley Petite Sirah

Odonata is the insect order encompassing dragonflies, and the name of a small winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Founder Denis Hoey launched the brand in 2004, but kept working at other wineries, including a few organic producers, before focusing on Odonata full time in 2014. The Machado Creek Vineyard is in the Santa Clara Valley and one of a few small vineyards that Hoey manages himself as the main grape supply for Odonata.

2015 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

Winery Notes: "Otty Hayne planted the Hayne Petite Syrah in 1953 while he was home from college visiting his grandfather. All head-trained, dry-farmed and organic, this Petite Syrah is one of the most unique wines in California. Powerful and inky in its youth, the wine becomes more feminine and refined with age and will outlive us all."

2015 Aaron Paso Robles Petite Sirah

93 points Vinous: "Bright purple. Smoke-tinged cherry and blueberry compote aromas show excellent clarity, and a mocha element sneaks in as the wine stretches out. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering densely packed yet lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of five-spice powder. Shows impressive energy on the broad, chewy finish, which is firmed by building tannins and sharpened by a late jolt of juicy acidity. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The inky colored 2015 Petite Sirah offers classic sweet black and plum fr ...

2014 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

94-97 points Vinous: "A deep, powerful wine, the 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is also the most explosive of these Petites. Inky dark fruit, wild flowers, graphite and savory herbs all raced across the palate in a wine endowed with pure energy and concentration. This viscerally thrilling Petite is going to require patience, but it is pretty special, even today. (AG)" (10/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard was the most closed down and tightest of all of Turley’s Petite Syrahs. It has a dark ruby/purpl ...

2008 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "All five of Turley’s 2008 Petite Syrahs (they do not spell it “Sirah”) are extraordinary, and I could probably write the same tasting notes for each. My favorites include the Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard, followed by the Pesenti Vineyard, which shows more chalky graphite characteristics. They all possess huge aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and ink, massive fruit concentration, enormous body, and a lot less alcohol than the Zinfandels (a character of this varietal). 2006 Robert Foley "Muscle Man" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep, saturated ruby. Wild, superripe black fruit, meat and pepper aromas perked up by a violet topnote. Supersweet and lush but with plenty of tannic support for the powerful, slightly raisiny dark berry flavors. At once denser and sweeter than the Pepperland, but with no shortage of energy. The huge, dusty tannins coat the front teeth. A chewy, no-holds-barred Petite Sirah that's worth laying down. (ST)" (05/2009) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Intense coffee, spice and cola notes are thickly full-bo ...

2010 Eighty Four Napa Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Wine Spectator: "This is dark, bold and highly aromatic, yet retains a sense of restraint and grace. Sandalwood, white pepper, dried lavender and rosemary give in to ripe, juicy huckleberry and blueberry flavors. The tannins are both mouthfilling and plush. The finish just goes on and on. Drink now through 2030. (MW)" (12/2015) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is big boisterous wine from Elias Fernandez and Doug Shafer that has been given some nice time in bottle after four years in new French oak. It's a viscous, black-as-night kind of exper ...

92 points Wine Spectator: "Wonderfully aromatic and full of personality, with fresh black and white pepper notes defining the zesty wild berry, mineral and savory flavors. Full-bodied, with tannins that are firm, gripping and taut. (MW)" (02/2009) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. 2009 Switchback Ridge "Peterson Family Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Winemaker Bob Foley has earned a reputation for iconic California wines with stints at Pride Mountain, Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, and his own Robert Foley label. This 100% Petite Sirah is an homage to one of his favorite varietals, as Wine Folly put it: "Foley has a clear passion for alternative grapes such as Charbono and Petite Sirah and makes incredibly rich red blends..." According to Foley, the 2009 is "a blueberry and boysenberry pie! So ripe and jammy you could spread it on an English muffin! A huge wine with intensely concentrated fruit that is ...

2010 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In many ways, Turley’s 2010 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most exotic and beguiling of these wines. Melted road tar, black olives, juniper berries and menthol all jump from the glass. A huge, full-bodied wine, the Rattlesnake Ridge boasts serious complexity and nuance. The tannins are also pretty fierce at this stage, so patience is a must. Still, there is no denying the 2010 is special. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. (RP) " (12/2013) 93 points Vinous: "The 2012 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard is laced with a compelling array of pomegranate, orange peel, spices, new leather, white flowers, cloves and dark red/black cherries. All things considered, the 2012 offers an attractive interplay of expressive fruit and structure, although the pure visceral thrill of the best vintages isn't quite there. ...

2013 Retro Cellars (Dunn) Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and densely packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spices, it has a firm yet approachable frame and long, chewy finish. (TF)" (09/2018) 91 points James Suckling: "A ripe and spicy array of mostly red-plum aromas here. This has a round and juicy palate with blackcurrant-pastille flavor to finish." 2015 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

92-95 points Vinous: "The 2015 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most reticent and tannic of these Petites. Then again, Rattlesnake Ridge sits at 2200 feet atop Howell Mountain, where the rugged landscape yields equally imposing wines. Readers will have to be patient with the 2015, but there is more than enough fruit and overall depth to stand up to the tannins. The light crop has accentuated everything in the wine's fruit and tannic profile." (12/2016)

It is an exotic, full-bodied, enormously concentrated wine to drink over the next two decades. The finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2025. (MW)" (11/2014) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: " Bright ruby-red. Aromas of black fruits, licorice, mocha and nutty oak. 2014 Jaffurs "Thompson Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Petite Sirah

From the producer: "The 2014 Petite Sirah maintains incredible darkness, power, and purity of fruit. Petite Sirah likes to get ripe, and 2014 was a consistently warm and sunny vintage. It has gobs of dark cherry and black fruit flavors, spice and licorice aromas. Approachable as a young wine, it will also reward additional cellaring."

2016 Gehricke Sonoma Valley Petite Sirah (Previously $27)

From August Sebastiani, Proprietor: "Growing up in Sonoma, we spent a lot of time exploring the local countryside: finding our way through neighboring vineyards owned by old friends and family. I remember the excitement of discovery and freedom while, as a young boy, I thoroughly studied our small town and its outskirts. I remember old dusty roads that led to forgotten vineyards and properties… Gehricke is a tribute to one such road. Today, we explore rural, premium wine sub-regions throughout Sonoma County, selecting fruit from the finest vineyards. We ...

It requires 4-5 years of cellaring and should last for three decades. (RP)" (12/2013) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, deep ruby-red. Juicy but very tightly wound, with exotic but reticent dark fruit flavors lifted by peach pit and pepper. Finishes impressively long, but with serious tannins that call for at least a few years of aging. Like the Pesenti and Turley Estate examples, this should evolve nicely for at least 12 to 15 years. With coaxing, it offers up scents of pepper, incense, blackberries, and crushed rocks, but the wine is extremely tannic and impenetrable. Forget it for a decade at least.
