2017 Field Recordings "PETS" Paso Robles Petite Sirah

Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

2004 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Petite Syrah reveals a black/purple color as well as notes of graphite, smoke, blackberries, blueberries, creme de cassis, a liqueur of mineral-like intensity, and huge tannin and concentration. A meaty effort, tasting almost like a liqueur of bloody steak is the 2004 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years. 2016 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

93-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Petite Sirah Tierra Theopolis Vineyard is another straight up fabulous barrel sample from Paul Gordon. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by gorgeous notes of black raspberries, lavender, flowers, and honeysuckle. Perfumed, elegant and already surprisingly forward, it still packs tons of fruit and richness on the palate, with vibrant acidity and a great finish." (07/2017) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is raucous and rawboned, exuding a powerful black-pepper aroma and a mouthcoating palate of beef, pepper, ...

2015 Odonata "Machado Creek Vineyard" Santa Clara Valley Petite Sirah

Odonata is the insect order encompassing dragonflies, and the name of a small winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Founder Denis Hoey launched the brand in 2004, but kept working at other wineries, including a few organic producers, before focusing on Odonata full time in 2014. The Machado Creek Vineyard is in the Santa Clara Valley and one of a few small vineyards that Hoey manages himself as the main grape supply for Odonata.

2015 Aaron Paso Robles Petite Sirah

93 points Vinous: "Bright purple. Smoke-tinged cherry and blueberry compote aromas show excellent clarity, and a mocha element sneaks in as the wine stretches out. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering densely packed yet lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of five-spice powder. Shows impressive energy on the broad, chewy finish, which is firmed by building tannins and sharpened by a late jolt of juicy acidity. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The inky colored 2015 Petite Sirah offers classic sweet black and plum fr ...

2014 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

Wine Enthusiast: "Dried herbs, elderberries, peppercorns and a strong streak of gamy meat show on the nose of this bottling, which is less dense and more nuanced in style than many other Petite Sirahs. The gamy element extends to the palate, giving complexity to the black fruits and sticky tannins. (MK)" (06/2018)

2014 Sean Thackrey "Sirius-Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino County Petite Sirah

Sean Thackrey is a Marin County based winemaker who has been doing it his way and to great success since 1980. Praise from Robert Parker: "One of California's most iconic and mystical winemakers, Sean Thackrey has logged in 20 or more vintages of consistently stunning wines that perhaps say it all with the simple quote on his label: -Sean A. Thackrey, Vintner, Bolinas, California."

2007 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Super-ripe black fruit aromas complicated by exotic peach pit and floral nuances (this vineyard has a handful of white muscat vines intermixed). Juicy but very tightly wound, with exotic but reticent dark fruit flavors lifted by peach pit and pepper. Finishes impressively long, but with serious tannins that call for at least a few years of aging. Like the Pesenti and Turley Estate examples, this should evolve nicely for at least 12 to 15 years. With coaxing, it offers up scents of pepper, incense, blackberries, and crushed rocks, but the wine is extremely tannic and impenetrable. Forget it for a decade at least. It will be another legend for Petite Sirah, but unless you are a patient connoisseur, few people will ever get to see it at its best. 2014 Turley "Pesenti Vineyard" Paso Robles Petite Syrah

96 points Vinous: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard is a real head-turner. Deep, inky and utterly spellbinding in its beauty, the Pesenti takes hold of all the sense and never lets up, in the way only the wines of Paso Robles can. Layers of rich, inky fruit open up effortlessly in an unctuous, breathtakingly beautiful, super-concentrated wine. And the price for such phenomenal quality? A song, especially compared to the prices Paso rock star producers command. (AG)" (12/2016) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Pesenti ...

Blackberry jam, violets, tar and spices are some of the many notes that flow from this deep, full-bodied wine. The huge, creamy finish saturates every corner of the palate. The Pesenti is one of the more expressive, powerful 2010s at Turley. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. The finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2025." (11/2014) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(15% alcohol; aged almost entirely in neutral barrels): Bright ruby-red. 2010 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In many ways, Turley’s 2010 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most exotic and beguiling of these wines. Melted road tar, black olives, juniper berries and menthol all jump from the glass. A huge, full-bodied wine, the Rattlesnake Ridge boasts serious complexity and nuance. The tannins are also pretty fierce at this stage, so patience is a must. Still, there is no denying the 2010 is special. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. My favorites include the Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard, followed by the Pesenti Vineyard, which shows more chalky graphite characteristics. At once powerful and refined, the 2013 captures the essence of this great site on the northern edge of St. Helena." (12/2014) K&L Notes: Turley Wine Cellars makes thirty-four wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. It is an exotic, full-bodied, enormously concentrated wine to drink over the next two decades. However, they also reveal less intensity and potential for development beyond 20 years. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential. This is a beauty that has deep ruby/purple color and notes of violets intermixed with asphalt, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. This wine should be more approachable than these other Petite Sirahs over the next 2-3 years, but last for at least two decades. 2016 Carlisle Sonoma County Petite Sirah

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The base 2016 Petite Sirah (there's 8% Syrah in the blend) is a serious mouthful of a wine. Black fruits, chocolate, scorched earth and charcoal notes all give way to a big, rich, opulent effort that has plenty of building tannin. I suspect it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for 10-15 years."
