2017 Field Recordings "PETS" Paso Robles Petite Sirah

Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

2015 Aaron Wines Paso Robles Petite Sirah

93 points Vinous: "Bright purple. Smoke-tinged cherry and blueberry compote aromas show excellent clarity, and a mocha element sneaks in as the wine stretches out. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering densely packed yet lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of five-spice powder. Shows impressive energy on the broad, chewy finish, which is firmed by building tannins and sharpened by a late jolt of juicy acidity. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The inky colored 2015 Petite Sirah offers classic sweet black and plum fr ...Read More »

2014 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

Wine Enthusiast: "Dried herbs, elderberries, peppercorns and a strong streak of gamy meat show on the nose of this bottling, which is less dense and more nuanced in style than many other Petite Sirahs. The gamy element extends to the palate, giving complexity to the black fruits and sticky tannins. (MK)" (06/2018)

2016 Carlisle Sonoma County Petite Sirah

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The base 2016 Petite Sirah (there's 8% Syrah in the blend) is a serious mouthful of a wine. Black fruits, chocolate, scorched earth and charcoal notes all give way to a big, rich, opulent effort that has plenty of building tannin. I suspect it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for 10-15 years." (06/2018) 90-93 points Vinous: "The 2016 Petite Sirah (Sonoma County) is one of the "Don't Miss" wines in this brilliant range from Carlisle. Inky, deep and pliant, the 2016 is full of Petite character, with notable fru ...Read More »

2008 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Eaglepoint Ranch has been source to powerful red wines for many years, and here’s another one. It impressives for the volume of tannins and fruity ripeness. Swamps the mouth with blackberry and cherry marmalade, bacon, pepper spice and smoky oak flavors that are huge, yet balanced in tannins, oak and acidity. 2015 Odonata "Machado Creek Vineyard" Santa Clara Valley Petite Sirah

Odonata is the insect order encompassing dragonflies, and the name of a small winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Founder Denis Hoey launched the brand in 2004, but kept working at other wineries, including a few organic producers, before focusing on Odonata full time in 2014. The Machado Creek Vineyard is in the Santa Clara Valley and one of a few small vineyards that Hoey manages himself as the main grape supply for Odonata.

1997 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah Back In Stock!
1997 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I do not believe I have ever tasted a more concentrated, essence-like wine than Turley's 1997 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard. Made from 55-year old vines that yielded only 9.8 tons of fruit for five acres, this opaque black-colored wine is the biggest, richest, most concentrated, tannic wine I have ever tasted. It will need at least a decade to shed some of its ferocious tannin, and will undoubtedly last for 40-50 years. Even more remarkable is its purity and overall equilibrium. Despite its Godzilla-like size, t ...Read More »

2016 Halcón "Tierra" Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

93-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Petite Sirah Tierra Theopolis Vineyard is another straight up fabulous barrel sample from Paul Gordon. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by gorgeous notes of black raspberries, lavender, flowers, and honeysuckle. Perfumed, elegant and already surprisingly forward, it still packs tons of fruit and richness on the palate, with vibrant acidity and a great finish." (07/2017) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is raucous and rawboned, exuding a powerful black-pepper aroma and a mouthcoating palate of beef, pepper, ...Read More »

2013 Retro Cellars (Dunn) Napa Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Petite Sirah has a fantastically opulent nose of star anise, cassia and cardamom with a core of blackberry preserves, plum pudding and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and densely packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spices, it has a firm yet approachable frame and long, chewy finish. Praise from Robert Parker: "One of California's most iconic and mystical winemakers, Sean Thackrey has logged in 20 or more vintages of consistently stunning wines that perhaps say it all with the simple quote on his label: -Sean A. The finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2025." (11/2014) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(15% alcohol; aged almost entirely in neutral barrels): Bright ruby-red. 2014 Turley "Pesenti Vineyard" Paso Robles Petite Syrah

96 points Vinous: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard is a real head-turner. Deep, inky and utterly spellbinding in its beauty, the Pesenti takes hold of all the sense and never lets up, in the way only the wines of Paso Robles can. Layers of rich, inky fruit open up effortlessly in an unctuous, breathtakingly beautiful, super-concentrated wine. And the price for such phenomenal quality? A song, especially compared to the prices Paso rock star producers command. (AG)" (12/2016) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Petite Syrah Pesenti ...Read More »

It is an exotic, full-bodied, enormously concentrated wine to drink over the next two decades. Aromas of graphite, acacia flowers, blueberries, crushed rocks, and a touch of pepper jump from the glass of this formidably endowed, full-bodied monster. It is deep, rich, but well-balanced and pure. Petite Sirah remains the most underrated varietal in California. It can provide remarkable drinking for over two decades. This wine is loaded but needs at least 5-8 years of bottle age and should keep for 25+ years. Best from 2020 through 2025. (TF)" (09/2018) 91 points James Suckling: "A ripe and spicy array of mostly red-plum aromas here. This has a round and juicy palate with blackcurrant-pastille flavor to finish. Drink or hold." 2013 Turley "Library Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard (14.4% alcohol) exhibits a deep purple color, sweet cassis, blueberry and blackberry fruit, full body, slightly softer tannins, and more approachability than the Pesenti or Turley Estate. This is the most precocious of the Petite Syrahs but still needs 7-8 years of bottle age. It should drink well for 30-50 years. 2016 Ridge Vineyards "Lytton Estate" Dry Creek Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Petite Syrah Lytton Springs is another fabulous wine in this range. Dense and powerful, the 2016 is endowed with striking depth and tons of character. The Petite tannins are nicely tamed in a wine that offers superb quality and pedigree. Crème de cassis, graphite, lavender and mint are front and center. The 2016 remains quite primary though, so readers need to be patient. 2016 Preston Dry Creek Petite Sirah

From the winery: "Our winemaking philosophy and strategy is based on minimal intervention, relying on the health and balanced growth of the vines to guide the process. Grapes are gently harvested by hand, fermentations proceed naturally without the addition of commercial yeasts or bacterial inoculation, the addition of sulfites is minimal and in some wines it is avoided completely." 2013 Mending Wall "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90 points Vinous: "The 2013 Petite Syrah Palisades Vineyard is so primary it almost tastes like a barrel sample. Inky blue and purplish fruit, spices, new leather and menthol are some of the signatures. Voluptuous and racy, the 2013 will drink well young, although it will be even better once some of the baby fat melts away. If I had to make a list of 'grand cru' sites for Petite in Napa Valley, Palisades would be on it. In the past, this site has produced Petite of real pedigree and class. I imagine that will be the same here in time. (AG)" (10/2015)

Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. This has fruit of steel, with compelling sweetness perfectly balanced by strong acidity. Wonderfully fat and layered but firm, with wild flavors of dark berries and smoked meat. 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential. 2015 Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Howell Mountain Petite Syrah

92-95 points Vinous: "The 2015 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge is the most reticent and tannic of these Petites. Then again, Rattlesnake Ridge sits at 2200 feet atop Howell Mountain, where the rugged landscape yields equally imposing wines. Readers will have to be patient with the 2015, but there is more than enough fruit and overall depth to stand up to the tannins. The light crop has accentuated everything in the wine's fruit and tannic profile." (12/2016)
