2017 Apaltagua Pinot Gris Reserva San Antonio Valley

From one of our most consistently under the radar producers of varietal wine in Chile, this Pinot Gris is delicious: brightly fruited yet with some textural weight, it most resembles Williamette Valley Pinot Gris in style. Very much worth a try to enjoy as an aperitive or with a pan seared fillet of salmon and sauteed greens with garlic.

Drink now. " (03/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I had never tasted the Cab Franc, but they started in 2009. My first encounter was with the 2013 Cabernet Franc, which bears the subtitle Reserva Especial; it is a fresh and fruit-driven, quite varietal and spicy effort, with freshly cracked black peppercorns and contained ripeness. 2015 Manos Andinas Reserva Pinot Noir Casablanca Valley (Previously $13)

Featuring fruit from 10 different growers in the area (including two from the Leyda Valley a bit to the south), this is a wonderful Pinot Noir for the price. Casablanca Valley has similar conditions to much of the central coast of California: abundant fog in the mornings and in the afternoons, plentiful sunlight, and vineyards that are well situated to grow Pinot Noir.

(02/2018) K&L Notes: Alberto Siegel produces this delicious blend in Chile's Colchagua Valley, an area long known for the quality of its terroir, particularly for Carmenere. 2015 Vina Gonzalez Bastias "Pais en Tinaja" Maule Valley

Located in the western Maule Valley, in the midst of Chile's coastal range, so far removed from any city that the only way to arrive is via a slow train (top speed 20 mph!) and a canoe trip across the Maule River! Needless to say, viticulture on this special 4 hectare vineyard is organic, with biodynamic preparations made on site. The vines are primarily 200 year old (you read that correctly, 200 years old!) Mission vines, with a smattering of very old (but slightly less old) Moscatel Negra. Following harvest, this wine is literally hand pressed. Hands a ...Read More »

De Martino has arguably undergone one of the more radical transformations the wine world has seen in the past five years. The second largest owner of organic vineyards in Chile, with 740 acres in production, De Martino is stepping up to the plate in other ways as well: the winery is 100% carbon neutral and beginning in 2011 they have stopped purchasing new oak barrels. 2014 Laberinto "Vista Lago" Mezcla Tinto Colbún

Rafael Tirado owns one of Chile's truly original properties in the tiny, high elevation section of Maule Valley called Colbún. Some of the vines are literally planted in a "laberinto" (labrynth) formation, which in Rafael's words would force him and anyone else working the vineyard to slow down and think! This particular cuvee is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, and it is delicious. Savory dark fruit still manages to come across as fresh and comparably lithe on the palate.

2014 Viña Quebrada "Domus Aurea" Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the best, most classical Cabernet Sauvignons from Maipo, the 2014 Domus Aurea contains some 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. This wine is always balanced and elegant. In a dry year like 2014, they think the key was sensitive irrigation without excess to keep the plant with enough water supply to get through the summer without stress. 2017 Laberinto "Cenizas de Laberinto" Sauvignon Blanc Maule Valley

Year in, year out, this is among my favorite Sauvignon Blancs from Chile, always with a sharp palate and a restrained character with a texture that makes me think of rocks rather than grapes.
