Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

2017 Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro-Alvarinho Vinho Verde

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Amazing: Fresh white refreshment for $10. Buy a case and you’ll have a savory, salty Atlantic white to drink all summer long. Right now, it’s delicate, with filigreed lemon-lime flavors offering fruit depth before signing off in a crisp, clean finish. Chill it as an early-evening aperitif, a brunch wine for bacalhão fritters or pike quenelles, or a picnic wine for ventresca tuna salad." (08/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Branco Quinta da Aveleda, the Estate white in the Bordeaux-style bottle, not to be confuse ...

2017 João Cabral Almeida "Camaleão" Minho Alvarinho

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Camaleão Alvarinho is very dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. Despite how dry it is, it seems fruity and rich, bursting with flavor. Not surprisingly, this adds some concentration to the blend (Alvarinho tends to produce deeper and richer wines). Showing beautiful purity of fruit and ripeness, this is pretty sexy. As it sits in the glass, it warms up and develops beautifully too, the underlying acidity and freshness coming closer to the foreground. Drink through 2030. 2017 Herdade do Esporão "Esporão" Reserva Branco Alentejo

92 points Decanter: "Really great value for such a rich, classy white: the first wine made by Esporão back in 1985. This vintage is a blend of Arinto, Antão Vaz and Roupeiro from 18-year-old estate vines, partially aged on lees for six months in a mix of French and US oak and tank. Forward aromas of ripe apricot and orange blossom lead on to a weighty, generous palate, balanced by oak spice, refreshing acidity and a long, tangy marmalade finish. (TG)" (02/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "This full-bodied white shows focus, with a vanilla cream underton ...

2017 Soalheiro "Allo" Vinho Verde

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 ALLO (from the AL of Alvarinho and the LO of Loureiro) marked a departure last year for Soalheiro, generally considered to be an Alvarinho specialist (not that they were wholly uninvolved with Loureiro). It is a 70/30 blend of Alvarinho and Loureiro coming in at a relatively modest 11% alcohol (more like a Loureiro than an Alvarinho). Opening with plenty of zip, zing and zest, not to mention a bit of mouth pucker, this is in a livelier style than the pure Alvarinhos. The Loureiro, despite its modest perc ...

2018 Soalheiro Alvarinho Vinho Verde

Delicious as usual, this mouthwatering Vinho Verde is 100% Alvarinho based. A combination of ripe golden stone fruits and fruit cocktail aromas lead to a rich, yellow and gold-fruited palate. Rich and with real flavor authority, the wine still shows loads of freshness and a nicely dry finish, perhaps a bit more so than the ebullient nose might suggest. The grapes are organically grown in the Vinho Verde sub-region of Melgaço and Monçao on granite soils. This expressive, more serious style of Vinho Verde is delicious as an aperitif or accompanied by your ...

2009 Fundacio Oriente Branco Colares

Produced from 9 hectares of vines (at the time, half of the D.O.'s total plantation) purchased from the local land preservation society, this is a fantastic, dry, creamy, white-fruited Malvasia-based wine from the smallest D.O. in Portugal, located right on the coast, where vines are literally planted in holes dug into the sand down to the point where clay subsoil is reached. Given the damp, harsh conditions, which make it difficult to grow and properly ripen grapes (even red wines here often barely reach 12% abv), coupled with the temptation of developi ...

2018 Quinta do Regueiro Alvarinho Trajadura Minho

Quinta do Regueiro makes great wines from their Vinho Verde area vineyards, located a short 10 minute drive from the town of Melgaço. As the name indicates, this is a blend of Alvarinho (a specialty grape of the sub-zone) and Trajadura. Since it is not 100% Alvarinho yet from the Melgaço area, the label cannot state Vinho Verde, though in style and spirit I would certainly group it in that category of Portuguese wines.

2018 Luis Seabra "Xisto Ilimitado" Branco Douro

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Branco Xisto Ilimitado is a 60/20 blend of Rabigato and Viosinho, with 10% each of Códega and Gouveio, all aged for eight months in used French oak. It comes in at 12.3% alcohol this year. This was not quite bottled when seen (about two weeks away), but it is the final blend. Seabra liked his 2018s a lot. This has fine concentration for the level, focus and a fresh feel. It is a tightly wound white with a bright and lingering finish. There's not a great deal of energy, though, and it is probably best drunk on the ...

2018 Sem Igual "Sem Mal" Vinho Verde

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Sem Mal, an unoaked 70/30 blend of Azal and Arinto, is the quirkiest of this winery's new brands. (Colloquially, "sem mal" roughly means "no harm," but if fully spelled out, it means "no malic acid"—the winery's little joke here). This had malolactic fermentation in the bottle, which means "natural CO2 in the bottle from the malo fermentation...CO2 protects the wine from oxidation...No sulfites needed....With sulfites, the malo could not happen in the bottle," said João. It comes in with just 1.5 grams of residual ...

2018 Aphros "Ten" Loureiro Vinho Verde

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fragrant and fruity, this very fresh wine has a strong mineral texture. The freshness gives way to a deeper, rich sense that brings out a more creamy character. It's ripe and rich at the end. (RV)" (08/2014) K&L Notes: Aphros wines are all produced from certified biodynamic grapes, in an area where farming this way, due to the humid climate, is not easy. Proprietor Vasco Croft is committed to biodynamics, and all of the Aphros wines are beautiful expressions of the terroir in the Lima sub-zone of Vinho Verde. "Ten" here refe ...

2017 Dom Diogo (Quinta da Raza) Avesso Vinho Verde

Located in the relatively warmer Basto sub-zone of the Vinho Verde, Quinta da Raza is making some delicious, original examples of Vinho Verde, exploring grape varieties beyond the usual array of grapes in the region. In this case, Avesso grapes add rich stone fruit to the mid-palate, and there is none of the typical Vinho Verde fizz, just pure apricot driven deliciousness !

2017 Quinta da Saudade "Palato do Coa" Branco Douro Superior

Palato do Côa started in 2008, when winemaker Carlos Magalhães and five of his friends acquired 7.5 hectares of old vines alongside 8.5 hectares of new vines. The vineyard is located right in the Upper Douro area, within the Douro region, which is not only the oldest wine region in the world, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. More specifically, the vines are planted in Muxagata, a small village in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. A place that holds one of the best terroirs in the region, combining schist soils with a unique micro climate that resona ...

2018 Maçanita Branco Douro

Importer's notes: "Maçanita’s Douro Branco exemplifies the confluence of richness and elegant minerality that is the hallmark of Douro whites. The indigenous Viosinho provides the backbone to this mineral driven wine, showcasing the slate soil and high altitude plantings that fuel this project. Fermented and aged all in stainless steel, Antonio and Joana very capably maintain the freshness and acidity in this wine, yielding a wine of purity and balance... Bright yellow-gold. On the nose, fresh floral aromas comingle with ripe yellow and green orchard fru ...

2016 Filipa Pato "Nossa Calcario" Bical Bairrada

Having learned from one of the pioneers in Portugal's Bairrada region, her father Luis, Filipa Pato makes wines of extraordinary fruit purity, satisfyingly rich texture, and impressive minerality. This is a beast of a Bical, with an acid forward personality, limestone derived drive, and a quality that should grab the attention of white Burgundy drinkers. Serious stuff!

2016 Quinta do Pinto "Vinhas do Lasso" Colheita Seleccionada

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Vinhas do Lasso Colheita Selccionada white is an unoaked and basically equal blend of Fernão Pires and Arinto sourced from 10 year old vines. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Quite dry, it is still laced with pears and hints of peach. It is quite delicious at the moment, but it isn't all about flavor. Showing reasonable depth for the level and an unevolved feel just now, it is an inexpensive white that provides some finish as well as that flavor in an attractive package... (MS)" (06/2015) Wine Enthusiast: " A bl ...
