1977 Taylor Vintage Port

98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in ...

1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

96 points Wine Spectator: "Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins. (JS, Web Only-1989)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. 1977 Warre's Vintage Port

94 points James Suckling: "The Warre was beautiful now. It showed lots of dried fruits and Christmas cake character on the nose and palate. Medium sweet. It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink. " (06/2016) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Deep garnet. Very pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of honey and toffee. Turns to custard. Full-bodied, sweet and fresh. Firm tannins, with elegance and balance. Will age for a long time, but ready. Generous, but subtle. (JS, Web-2008)" 92 points Robert Par ...

1994 Taylor Vintage Port

100 points James Suckling: "This is, to date, the greatest Vintage Port ever from here. It overwhelmed me years ago when I tasted it from barrel, but only now is it crossing gradually into its drinking window. The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. A full-bodied, medium sweet and sublime Vintage Port, showing forest fruits and freshly picked blackberries on the palate in the form of a creamy, focused and tannic texture." 1985 Graham's Vintage Port

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. (RP)" (01/1989) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Very youthful. Will improve for a long time. This ...

1963 Taylor Vintage Port

97 points Wine Spectator: "A big wine with superb balance, a shining example of this exuberantly fruity vintage. Deep ruby, with violets and coffee on the nose, full-bodied, with dried cherry flavors and plenty of tannin, balanced and long on the finish. (JS)" (12/1989) 96 points Vinous: "The 1963 Taylor's Vintage Port is lucid in colour, very well defined with wild strawberry, Clementine, leather and tobacco scents, one of the few to contain a floral element. Shows plenty of grip, presenting a long, full finish, filled with Asian spice and raspberry tart accents. Rich and chocolaty. One for the ages. Best from 2030 through 2060. *#1 Wine of the Year 2014 - Highly Recommended - Collectibles* (KM)" (02/2014) 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Dow Vintage Port was made from no less than 44 separate ferments from finest fruit sourced from Quinta do Bom ...

(RP)" (01/1989) Jancis Robinson: "Mid crimson and slightly grey. Very sweet and round and slightly raisiny. Slight rustic edge but very ripe and round and lively with a certain freshness and punch. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. Everything glides with grace through the finish, like a gently wafting plume of white smoke off of burning incense. 1970 Graham's Vintage Port

94 points John Gilman: "I drank quite a bit of the 1970 Graham’s over the course of the 1990s, but had not crossed paths with a bottle in several years until this most recent example. The wine is superb in 1970, as it displays a bouquet of voluptuous complexity, offering up scents of black cherry, plum, cedar, fresh mint, chocolate, a bit of tobacco leaf, and lovely, estery floral topnotes. 1965 Taylor Fladgate "Very Old Single Harvest" Tawny Port

97 points Wine & Spirits: "It’s tempting to look for house style in Tawny Port, especially among the British firms who make a point of defining a style for their Vintage selections. Taylor’s Vintage, blended from several estate vineyards, is defined by the old vines at Quinta do Vargellas, a Douro Superior site that produces tense, muscular and firmly mineral wines. It's a very deep blue-black colour with an expressive, super-ripe nose of plum, mint and bergamot which springs from the glass. The palate is rich, velvety and voluptuous in typical Graham’s style. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1934 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Riserva Velho. The little-known region of Colares enjoyed a brief time in the sun in the first few decades of the 20th century, as it was one of the few European wine regions to escape the ravages of phylloxera, thanks to its sandy soils and coastal climate. The also little-known Ramisco varietal is and was the resident grape for the region's winemakers. Gomes da Silva & Filhos is undoubtedly the most famous and most widely available producer from this region, with vintages from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s routinely wowing collectors and geeks across the online wine community (just check out the threads on Cellar Tracker and Wine Berserkers to get a sense of what these wines are capable of). Based on their track record, these are some of the longest-lived red wines in the world, period, full stop. These 1930s bottlings should be the ultimate testament to the impeccable stature of the region known as "Portugal's

Dow's style tends to be more backward, but this opaque black/purple-colored wine reveals a huge, powerful, intense palate, with gobs of flesh and viscous fruit. There is considerable tannin in the finish. It is a massive port with no indication of excessive alcohol in the finish. A magnificent young, dry-styled vintage port that just goes on and on in the mouth, it should last for 20-30 years. 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port (100JS, 100WS, 95JG, 93RP). James Suckling: "Vintage Port doesn't seem like the right wine in the middle of the summer but I had an Amarone producer for dinner the other night in Tuscany and he had never drunk a wine from his birth year. He was lucky enough to have been born in 1977 - a great Port year! I found a bottle of 1977 Fonseca in my cellar - probably my last. It was absolutely gorgeous. I gave this fortified wine a perfect score in its youth and I think it has finally evolved into its perfection as a mature vintage Port. Here is the tasting note. 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port: This is in total balance now with such harmony. What amazing aromas of berry and flowers. Full and sweet, the tannins are complete dissolved. The fruit is perfect. This goes on for minutes. Drink now. But it will go forever." (08/2016)

During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading.
