1996 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac Top Pick!
1996 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac

Jancis Robinson: "Quite dark crimson. Savoury, evolved, rather toasty nose. Round and mild and easy to like. (JR)" (02/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very good example of this estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this [is a] seductive Lynch-Moussas. 1996 Joël Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Impressively saturated ruby-red color. Complex aromas of black raspberry, kirsch, Valrhona chocolate, smoke and gunflint. Tactile and quite concentrated; really dense with extract. Ripe acidity gives the deep flavors lovely clarity. A real fruit essence: the wine somewhat chewy tannins and alcohol are hidden by fruit. (ST)" (12/1998) K&L Notes: Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, unmarred by the ...Read More »

1996 Lokoya Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon Bin soiled Label

95 points Wine Spectator: "Enormously complex and detailed, with rich, concentrated, earthy currant, anise, mineral, sage, plum, cedar and spice. Unfolds gracefully, turning elegant and polished. (JL)" (11/1999) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Aromas of smoky roasted plum and cherry cough drop. Full, sweet and thick, with unusual clarity of flavor for the vintage. This retains its compelling sweetness through its very long aftertaste. Lush, unaggressive tannins hit the palate quite late. 1996 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a pronounced smoky, espresso bean, and kirsch-scented nose. Round, dense, rich, full-bodied, and open-knit, its low acid flavors are undeniably appealing. Black olives make an appearance in the wine's aromatics as it sits in the glass. (RP)" (01/2000)

1996 Dominus "Napanook Vineyard" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is the first release of Napanook, the second wine from Dominus. It has lovely, approachable fruit in the red-cherry, red-plum spectrum; the finish is medium length and silky. It’s tasting very good now, and should improve in bottle over the next three to five years. The blend is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 13% Petit Verdot. 1996 Falesco "Montiano" Lazio

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Montiano (100% Merlot) was bottled unfined and unfiltered, after aging in French oak casks. Sadly, there are only 500 cases produced. It boasts an opaque purple color, followed by a knock-out nose of blackberry liqueur intermingled with smoke, pain grille, and chocolate. Full-bodied and thick, with a voluptuous texture, layered richness, superb purity, and a finish that lasts over 30 seconds, this is a profoundly concentrated and complex Merlot to drink now, and over the next 10-15 years. Large-scaled, supple and voluminous; muscular but not hard. Lovely ripe acids. Really opens nicely in the mouth. From the Pinot Fin, which comes through in the wine's finesse and suave tannins. This seamless, full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured, opulent, and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. Delivers a round, clean, pure mouthfeel of vibrant, focused red berry and blackberry flavors. Superb balance, as it walks a tightrope among the relatively high acidity, ripe tannins and delicious fruit. Worth cellaring. 1996 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Haut Bailly is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. It has an attractive bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles, briary, a touch of gravel and dried orange peel. As I commented a few years ago, this is a 1996 that is not as immediate as others, but seems to find its voice with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a soy-tinged opening. This is well balanced and quite rounded in the mouth, quite masculine and perhaps having dispensed with some of the f ...Read More »

1996 Araujo "Eisele Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Jeurg Richter’s pre-Climens lunch. This is far more classier than the Hill of Grace ’94 poured alongside. The nose is stout and correct, wonderful precision here with blackberry, blueberry, tobacco, cedar-wood and a touch of cassis. Very sleek and appealing. 1996 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild, Pauillac

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild is aging in wonderful fashion, to wit, a straight down the fairway Pauilliac. Now at 20 years of age, it has developed a fresh and very brine-scented bouquet with plenty of undergrowth and bell pepper aromas. You could almost imagine a bit of Loire Cabernet Franc in here! The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, impressive body and backbone, likewise more than enough freshness on the structured finish laced with white pepper and bell pepper. I noticed a more pronounced tobacco scent developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the 1996 d'Armailhac, spicy with cracked black pepper, Hoi Sin, bay leaf and Asian spice notes liberally sprinkled over the finish. (JS, Web Only-2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. One minute it’s all cherries and smoke; the next it heaves up a great draught of currants, cocoa and cedar. It’s a big wine but deceptive; the tannins are airy and lilting, there’s charm and underneath, enormous complexity. It’s best left alone for a few more years, but it’s really very lovely now." 1996 Chateau St. Jean "Cinq Cépages" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Wine Spectator: "Few things in wine are as frustrating as experiencing difficulties with a great bottling that you’re long on. That’s been the case for me with the 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 1999. With a 95-point rating, 11,000 cases made and a $28 price tag, it was one of the easier picks we’ve made over the years. The wine is surprisingly powerful and structured for a 1996, as well as dense and backward. This intense, impressively-endowed Chateauneuf needs several years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2012. (RMP)" (02/1999) Wine Spectator: "Fairly racy, but also shows vanilla, mocha, smoke and toasty accents. 1996 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan

94 points John Gilman: "The 1996 Haut Brion is less hermetically sealed than the 1998, and is beginning to hint a bit at its secondary layers of aromatic complexity, though it still remains a very young wine. The bouquet is deep and classic, as it jumps from the glass in a mélange of black cherries, dark berries, Cuban tobacco, incipient notes of the black truffles to come, and a fine base of Graves earth. I assume that the 1996 saw the same amount of new oak as the 1998, but there is little sign of the wood at the present time. On the palate the wine is ...Read More »

The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. 1996 Joseph Drouhin Volnay Santenots
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Joseph Drouhin Volnay Santenots. Stephen Tanzer writes: "The Drouhin reds, especially those wines from their own vines (as opposed to their negociant bottlings, from purchased grapes and/or wine), are consistently supple, perfumed wines that impress more with their precise, complex aromas than with their sheer palate presence in early tastings. Yet these gently extracted wines can offer surprising longevity, strong evidence that balance is the key to graceful aging in bottle. After the fruit is sorted on a table de trie, then destemmed and crushed, it is moved into the fermenters without being pumped. Vinification is done in a combination of small wood vats, small vertical stainless steel vats and larger stainless steel fermenters."

1996 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot (97RP, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Merlot (3,000 cases) is a worthy rival. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc tips the scales at a heady 14.6% alcohol. Could it be better than the 1997? The wine is opaque black/purple-colored, with a knock-out nose of plums, black cherries, chocolate, raspberries, licorice, and toasty new oak. Viscous in the mouth, with superb purity, this is a riveting, mind-boggling Merlot that sets a new reference point for this varietal in California. Bid on this bottle of 1996 Rochioli "Three Corner" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir (93RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Rochioli's Pinot Noirs are at the top of the qualitative pyramid for this varietal in California, competing favorably with the Pinot Noirs made by Marcassin, Martinelli, and Kistler. The dense, deep ruby/purple-colored 1996 Pinot Noir Three Corner Vineyard (125 cases) reveals a sweet black raspberry-scented nose with high quality pain grille notes, and intriguing Asian spice scents. Sweet and ripe on the attack (from fruit maturity, not sugar), this full-bodied, dense, lushly-textured Pinot Noir is an infant in terms of development, but it promises to drink well young, and last for 7-8 years." The bouquet develops incrementally, offering up aromas of black raspberries, cherries, cigar box, licorice, and leather.
