1996 Lynch-Moussas, Pauillac

Jancis Robinson: "Quite dark crimson. Savoury, evolved, rather toasty nose. Round and mild and easy to like. (JR)" (02/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very good example of this under-achieving estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this seductive Lynch-Moussas should drink well at a young age. (RP)" (04/1999) K&L Notes: In February 1 ...

1996 St. Clement "Oroppas" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

Wine Spectator: "Elegant and refined, with a pretty core of spicy plum, black cherry and currant, picking up smoky, toasty oak nuances, finishing with a lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot." (10/1998) K&L Notes: Oroppas, which comprises some of the winery's top vineyard lots, has been a successful part of St. Clement's portfolio since the 1991 vintage.

1996 Cardinale Napa/Sonoma Counties Bordeaux Blend

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Cardinale is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, of which 62% came from Napa and 38% from Sonoma. Just under 3,000 cases were produced. It is also a top rank wine, and a star of the vintage. A saturated purple color is followed by licorice, cedar, fruit cake, and black currant aromas. Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, with low acidity but high tannin, this young, muscular classic should have fabulous aging potential.(RP)" (01/2000) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cell ...

1996 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a pronounced smoky, espresso bean, and kirsch-scented nose. Round, dense, rich, full-bodied, and open-knit, its low acid flavors are undeniably appealing. Black olives make an appearance in the wine's aromatics as it sits in the glass. (RP)" (01/2000) K&L Notes: Praise for Silver Oak from Robert Parker: "Silver Oak wines are supple, explosively fruity, and deliver copious quantities of glycerin, extract, and richness wrapped in generous qua ...

1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge, Pessac-Leognan (1.5L)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. With a dark ruby/purple color, it displays a beautiful presentation of blackberry and cassis fruit nicely dosed with subtle new oak. On the attack, the wine is sweet and pure, with striking symmetry, and a compellingly balanced mid-palate and finish. Although not as big as some blockbusters from this vintage, it is extremely complex (both aromatically and flavor-wise), and impressive for its restraint, subtlety, and impeccable balance. 1996 Beringer "Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is still young and precocious, but don’t judge it too quickly. Let it air in your glass, and watch how it changes. One minute it’s all cherries and smoke; the next it heaves up a great draught of currants, cocoa and cedar. It’s a big wine but deceptive; the tannins are airy and lilting, there’s charm and underneath, enormous complexity. It’s best left alone for a few more years, but it’s really very lovely now." (02/2001) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Tangy, seductive aromas of b ...

1996 Robert Mondavi "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Explosive, somewhat feral, highly aromatic nose of cassis, roast coffee, game, smoky oak and chocolate; shows a very strong torrefaction aspect. Lush, rich and deep; has a pliancy and degree of early personality I find in only the very best young California cabernets. Subtle notes of chocolate and tobacco contribute to the wine appeal. Finishes fairly tannic but very long. Distinctly more layered than the '95. (ST)" (11/1999) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Caberne ...

1996 Clark-Claudon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clark Claudon's 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark purple color, followed by a classic, Bordeaux-like nose of cassis, lead pencil, and smoky new oak. A wine of considerable complexity and elegance, with outstanding purity, richness, and nicely integrated wood and tannin, this is a classic, backward yet promising, symmetrical Cabernet that can be drunk early in life, or cellared for 15+ years. Impressive! (RP)" (08/1999)

1996 Grace Family Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1L)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby-red. Expressive aromas of black cherry, brown spices and cocoa powder. Sweet and rich in the mouth; a step up in density and length from the above wines. Finishes long, with a burst of kirsch flavor. Tannins are in harmony with the wine. (ST)" (05/1998) K&L Notes: An unusual, highly collectible bottle from Napa Valley's Grace Family Vineyards, known for their charitable organizations as well as great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. 1996 Vineyard 29 (Grace Family) Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full ruby-red. Plum, raspberry jam, blackberry liqueur, and spicy, smoky oak on the nose; slightly syrupy in the style of the vintage. Plump and soft in the middle, but given shape by a slight edge of acidity..." According to the Wine Spectator: "...herb, chocolate, bell pepper and currant flavors, this turns supple and polished, finishes with a leathery currant flavor. Best from 2000 through 2007. 700 cases made." (09/99)

1996 Chateau St. Jean "Cinq Cépages" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Wine Spectator: "Few things in wine are as frustrating as experiencing difficulties with a great bottling that you’re long on. That’s been the case for me with the 1996 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 1999. With a 95-point rating, 11,000 cases made and a $28 price tag, it was one of the easier picks we’ve made over the years. Since this Sonoma County wine was so delicious and readily available, I bought two cases so I could share the wine experience with friends as often as possible. For the first decade or s ...

1996 The Terraces Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Wine Spectator: "harply focused, with a ripe, rich, complex beam of currant, black cherry, herb, olive, anise, cedar and spice, finishing with firm but supple tannins and a lingering aftertaste. " (10/1999) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red-ruby. Spicy aromas of blackberry, sandalwood and leather. A juicy, nicely balanced midweight whose cool flavors show a restrained sweetness and good penetration. Not as oaky as recent vintages of this release. Finishes with good length and slightly dry (wood?) tannins. " (11/1999)

Dark ruby-colored and medium-bodied, with notes of black cherries, spicy new oak, leather, and earth, it is an elegantly-styled wine to drink over the next 10-12 years. 1996 La Jota Howell Mountain Selection Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Select is a beautifully rendered wine with an opaque plum color, and knock-out aromatics of cedarwood, cassis, cigar box, and roasted Provencal herbs. With more structure than the 1997, it is a jammy, rich, concentrated, full-bodied wine that can be drunk now or cellared for two decades. This beauty remains one of the better values in great California Cabernet Sauvignon. (RP)" (12/1998) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruggedly tannic, with an earthy streak running through ...

1996 Oakford Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Has the usual mid-Napa aromas of cassis, smoke and oak. Flavors are similar, ripe and fruity, verging on jammy. But the tannins are ultrasoft and creamy, yet complex and lacy. Provides sheer pleasure now or you can age it. From consulting winemaker Heidi Barrett. (WE)" (12/1999) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A very seductive wine. Rich in flavor, finesse and polish, with ripe, juicy plum, blackberry, cherry, tar, tea, spice and pretty toasty oak. Not overdone, but complex and elegant, with fine, detailed tannins. Drinkable now. ...

1996 Leoville Barton, St-Julien

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. This seamless, full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured, opulent, and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. 1996 Mayacamas Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1996 Mayacamas Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (94JG). John Gilman: "The 1996 Mayacamas cabernet is the current “library release” from the winery and it is a superb vintage for one of California’s finest First Growths. The wine is comprised of a blend of eighty-three percent cabernet sauvignon, twelve percent merlot and five percent cabernet franc in this vintage, and offers up simply stellar complexity on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a beautiful, blossoming blend of sweet black cherries, cigar ash, complex soil tones, still a touch of youthful bell pepper, fresh herbs, tobacco leaf and a distinct topnote of espresso. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and just beginning to really blossom, with fine mid-palate depth, ripe, well-integrated tannins and great length and grip on the impeccably balanced and soil-driven finish. Just a brilliant bottle of wine in the making. Drink between 2014-2050." (10/2010)

More deft and cedary than the bigger boned 1986 vintage (also tasted), this is light delicate and elegant. Again, ink and spice on the nose, with stunning cedar and blackcurrant fruit with a touch of undergrowth, graphite and cigar box. Beautifully fresh with sublime melting tannins. (JS)" (11/2015)
