1989 Bel Air Lagrave, Moulis

Great value--we tasted this beauty in April 2014 and bought it on the spot. Drink now--quite sweet on the palate. Hard to miss on this one. (Clyde Beffa Jr, K&L)

1989 Joel Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling.

1989 Beausejour Duffau, St-Emilion (1.5L)

According to Robert Parker: "Given the very fine 1989 and outstanding 1990 produced, this property may be on a hot streak. While the 1989 has a promising, understated bouquet of black-cherry fruit, minerals, and spicy oak, it is surprisingly restrained for the vintage. Nevertheless, the ruby/purple color, the velvety, extracted, almost sweet, alcoholic flavors, and good tannins in the finish are clearly reminiscent of a vintage where tremendous ripeness was attained. It is not a blockbuster, but rather an extremely well-balanced, concentrated, impressive ...Read More »

1989 Figeac, St-Emilion (nicked/soiled label/very high shoulder)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. In many ways, the 1989 Figeac was the biggest surprise of the vertical tasting. Hitherto lambasted by critics (including myself I might add), here it seemed to have undergone some Damascene conversion! Generous on the nose, it does not quite offer the fruit intensity of the 1990, but there are lovely warm gravel and licorice aromas, all beautifully detailed. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, sensual in style with Provençal herbs and fennel tincturing t ...Read More »

1989 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
1989 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Owner John Goelet established Clos du Vol in 1972. He bought vineyards in Stags Leap to specifically grow quality Cabernet Sauvignon. He made his first vintage that same year (1972) and pitted his Cabernet against some of France's finest wines in the now legendary 1976 "Judgement of Paris" wine competition in California. Clos du Val's Cabernet (the 1972) was one of just a few California Cabs that were selected by judge Steven Spurrier. The estate is still family-owned.

1989 Inglenook "Reserve Cask" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Now taken over and rebranded by Francis Ford Coppola, Inglenook was one of the last remaining California estates that could trace it's history back to 1900 or before. Along with the likes of Buena Vista, Charles Krug and Beaulieu, Inglenook's older bottlings bring back young memories of our first wine tastings and our first trips to Napa.

1989 La Conseillante, Pomerol Back In Stock!
1989 La Conseillante, Pomerol

97 points Vinous: "The 1989 La Conseillante is one of my favourite vintages from this decade and in recent years has probably matured better than its 1990 counterpart. The most recent bottle confirms this. Even at 29 years of age it boasts an astonishing, exuberant, floral nose with crushed violet interwoven into the plush black cherry and blueberry fruit. There is something ravishing, sumptuous yet not decadent about these aromatics. The palate continues the theme with plush, cashmere tannin, perfect acidity and disarming purity. It has tremendous depth ...Read More »

1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné "La Chapelle" Hermitage (nicked cap, bin soiled label)

100 points James Suckling: "I have always been a huge fan of this wine, with incredible depth and richness of character. Dried meat, game, berry, spice, asphalt and tar. Full body with layers of ripe tannins and spice. It goes on for minutes on the finish. This is a fabulously spicy with black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, black truffles, sous bois and licorice. Decant two or three hours before serving. Purity and balance. This is the legendary 1961 again. 1989 Margaux, Margaux Back In Stock!
1989 Margaux, Margaux

97 points Wine Spectator: "This is about as alluring as it gets aromatically, with singed alder, juniper, bay and charcoal notes out front, hinting at power but turning beguiling as they flow into the core of steeped red currant, dried currant and black tea. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish. Always a great debate vis-à-vis the '90, but the slightly darker profile here gives this wine a lovely bit of extra drama. 1989 Talbot, St-Julien

Jancis Robinson: "Bright bricky garnet. More evidently leafy than the Langoa, and that makes it smell younger, still of blackcurrant leaves and capsicum, even lavender, though there is a light meatiness. Not as long as the Langoa but richer than I expected from the nose. There's still a slight grip in the tannins and I wonder if there always will be. The tannnis may well outlast the fruit. After an hour, more liquorice on the nose and perhaps just a little dry on the palate but not dried out. 17/20 (JH)" (07/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark r ...Read More »

1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (bin soiled label)

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and down the road, some of the more recent vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010 should come close to matching the 1989's extraordinary concentration and undeniable aging potential. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful ...Read More »

1989 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac

98 points James Suckling: "Freshly picked blackberries turn into minty dark chocolate and oozing caramel with domineering eucalyptus on the nose. It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. This is a Mouton I found massive at the time, then elegant and slightly austere years later, but today true to its former glory. Like the amazing 1947, it should not be forgo ...Read More »

1989 Lagrange, St-Julien

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This muscular, thick, unctuous, lavishly-oaked wine may cause raised eyebrows by those looking for something restrained and understated. There is no doubting the hedonistic appeal of this style of wine. The 1989 (the first bottle was corked) is a smoky, tar, cassis, roasted herb, jammy style of wine, with a dense purple color, sweet tannin, and low acidity. It is easy to drink, although the bouquet has not changed since I tasted it several years ago. The wine is soft and fat, but not flabby. It should drink well ...Read More »

1989 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien

91 points Decanter: "The colour remains a deep ruby, with burnt caramel arriving midpalate. Not quite as luscious as the 1990 vintage at this stage of the game, but still full of vigour. There is shape and form to the tannins and fruit that suggests you are in safe hands. Smoked notes of an autumn fireside draw things to a close. Still much to look forward to. (JA)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: 95 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "A deeper colour compared to the ’88 Poyferre with more maturity on the rim. 1989 Palmer, Margaux

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1989 Château Palmer has always been my favourite vintage from that decade after the 1983. The first bottle was unfortunately corked. The second was as it should be: the nose tensile with red berries, sous-bois, potpourri and strawberry pastille - lively and energetic. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant right from the start, silky in texture with plenty of citrus fruit, gently building to a harmonious and detailed finish that lingers in the mouth. 1989 Beau-Sejour Becot, St. Emilion (Previously $250)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted side by side with the 1990, it is interesting how much more tannic the 1989 seems to be. Colored a dark plum with some lightening at the edge, the nose shows notes of compost, melted licorice, oak, and black cherry fruit. The overt oakiness noticeable in its youth has become far more subtle and less aggressive. In the mouth the wine starts off large-scaled, fleshy, and fat, but then some relatively astringent tannins kick in in the finish. This has been a perplexing wine to follow, since it was seemingly softer and ...Read More »

1989 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien

98 points Decanter: "1989 was an early year, with flowering three weeks ahead of usual. Now at 30 years old, a floral aspect curls out of the glass, with touches of roses and peonies, followed on the palate by bilberries and blackberries, with a cigar smoke and eucalyptus finish. It's still vigorous in its tannic structure, but it's soft and supple enough to enjoy today. This bottle was recorked by hand at the winery last year, with five people checking every single one of the 5,000 bottles remaining at the chateau. The wines were topped up from magnums ...Read More »

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1989 Calon-Segur, St-Estèphe (92JG, 90RP). John Gilman: "The 1989 Château Calon-Ségur is a very good example of the vintage that is now into its apogee and drinking with great style. The bouquet is a refined blend of black cherries, dark berries, Cuban cigar wrapper, dark soil tones, a touch of new leather, dried eucalyptus, gentle herb tones and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully resolved, with a sweet core of fruit, lovely soil signature, melting tannins and lovely length and grip on the à point and classy finish. This is not a particularly powerful example of the 1989 vintage, but it is very elegant, complex and drinking with lovely style at age twenty-five. Drink between 2014-2035." (02/2014)
