1989 Beausejour Duffau, St-Emilion (1.5L)

According to Robert Parker: "Given the very fine 1989 and outstanding 1990 produced, this property may be on a hot streak. While the 1989 has a promising, understated bouquet of black-cherry fruit, minerals, and spicy oak, it is surprisingly restrained for the vintage. Nevertheless, the ruby/purple color, the velvety, extracted, almost sweet, alcoholic flavors, and good tannins in the finish are clearly reminiscent of a vintage where tremendous ripeness was attained. It is not a blockbuster, but rather an extremely well-balanced, concentrated, impressive ...Read More »

1989 Coutet, Barsac

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ex-cellar bottle served at Chateau Coutet. The ’89 Coutet is clear with a bright amber hue. The bouquet does not quite have the definition of either the ’98 or ’01 tasted alongside, with notes of dried mango, apricot, quince and a touch of cooking apple. The palate is vibrant and full of energy, displays superb balance and delineation: dried pineapple, mango, a dash of ginger and a saline tang right on the finish. One has to admire the harmony and the precision of this ’89 that should age gracefully over the next ...Read More »

1989 Talbot, St-Julien

Jancis Robinson: "Bright bricky garnet. More evidently leafy than the Langoa, and that makes it smell younger, still of blackcurrant leaves and capsicum, even lavender, though there is a light meatiness. Not as long as the Langoa but richer than I expected from the nose. There's still a slight grip in the tannins and I wonder if there always will be. The tannnis may well outlast the fruit. After an hour, more liquorice on the nose and perhaps just a little dry on the palate but not dried out. 17/20 (JH)" (07/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark r ...Read More »

1989 Raymond Lafon, Sauternes

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 exhibits aromas of honeyed pineapple/tropical fruit and toasty new oak, as well as an exotic, flashy perfume that is not as pronounced in either the 1990 or 1988. The 1989 exhibits less botrytis than the other two vintages. The wine possesses an opulent, full-bodied, exotic, lavishly rich personality, moderate sweetness, and huge quantity of extract, glycerin, and alcohol in its finish. The wine is also extremely young and unevolved. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025. (RP)" (01/1998) 90 points Stephen Ta ...Read More »

1989 Doisy-Védrines, Sauternes

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Doisy-Védrines vertical at the château, the 1989 Château Doisy-Védrines sports a similar colour to the 1990 with big fat tears in the glass. The nose is more introverted than the 1990, perhaps a little tertiary with honey, marmalade, fig and barley sugar. The palate is medium-bodied, more viscous than the 1990, very rounded, smooth and seductive with almost lush honeyed fruit, marmalade and quince. There is a lot of botrytis underpinning the rich, sensuous finish. It represents a serious Barsac for ...Read More »

1989 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien

92 points Wine Spectator: "Delivers lots of tanned leather and spices, with very ripe fruit, from dried strawberry to raisin, turning to jam. Full-bodied, offering a very fresh palate of exotic fruit, currant and raisin as well as silky and polished tannins. So long and beautiful. Why wait? But it has a long life ahead. (JS, Web-2010)"

1989 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien

96 points Wine Spectator: "Very ripe, with raisin and dried fruits on the nose. You can smell the sun-dried grapes. Full-bodied, delivering firm tannins and a very fresh palate. Long and flavorful, offering currant, berries and all sorts of dark fruits, but turns lightly earthy and floral. This is a thoroughly complex wine. Just starting to really open into the mature 20-year-old wine it is, but such a great life ahead of it. Muscular. (JS, Web Only-2010)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby (a far less saturated color than the 1990, for ...Read More »

1989 Figeac, St-Emilion

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. In many ways, the 1989 Figeac was the biggest surprise of the vertical tasting. Hitherto lambasted by critics (including myself I might add), here it seemed to have undergone some Damascene conversion! Generous on the nose, it does not quite offer the fruit intensity of the 1990, but there are lovely warm gravel and licorice aromas, all beautifully detailed. The palate is silky smooth on the entry, sensual in style with Provençal herbs and fennel tincturing t ...Read More »

1989 Lynch Moussas, Pauillac

Wine Spectator: "Pretty, and enjoyable now. Good dark-ruby color. Plum and berry aromas have cassis and floral undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a long, fresh and fruity finish. (JS)" (05/1999)

1989 Lagrange, St-Julien

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This muscular, thick, unctuous, lavishly-oaked wine may cause raised eyebrows by those looking for something restrained and understated. There is no doubting the hedonistic appeal of this style of wine. The 1989 (the first bottle was corked) is a smoky, tar, cassis, roasted herb, jammy style of wine, with a dense purple color, sweet tannin, and low acidity. It is easy to drink, although the bouquet has not changed since I tasted it several years ago. The wine is soft and fat, but not flabby. It should drink well ...Read More »

1989 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien

91 points Decanter: "The colour remains a deep ruby, with burnt caramel arriving midpalate. Not quite as luscious as the 1990 vintage at this stage of the game, but still full of vigour. There is shape and form to the tannins and fruit that suggests you are in safe hands. Smoked notes of an autumn fireside draw things to a close. Still much to look forward to. (JA)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: 95 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "A deeper colour compared to the ’88 Poyferre with more maturity on the rim. But it has a glorious nose that leaps from the glass: ...Read More »

1989 Beau-Sejour Becot, St. Emilion

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted side by side with the 1990, it is interesting how much more tannic the 1989 seems to be. Colored a dark plum with some lightening at the edge, the nose shows notes of compost, melted licorice, oak, and black cherry fruit. The overt oakiness noticeable in its youth has become far more subtle and less aggressive. In the mouth the wine starts off large-scaled, fleshy, and fat, but then some relatively astringent tannins kick in in the finish. This has been a perplexing wine to follow, since it was seemingly softer and ...Read More »

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (95WS, 94RP, 94ST). Wine Spectator: "What a nose here, from crushed mulberry to tanned leather to tar. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins that are soft and caressing, like cashmere. This is so tight and powerful still; it seems to be holding back.
