One of a few notable Bordeaux chateaux established by an Irish immigrant, Chateau Phelan-Segur was formed in the early 1800s by wine merchant Bernard O’Phelan of Tipperary. The estate grew to be one of the largest in St-Estèphe before being sold in 1883 to the Delon family that held it until 1984. The estate's proximity to the estuary of the Gironde and soils of alluvial gravel over sandy clay have produced several vintages of exceptional wines.
