Don Mateo "K&L Exclusive" Pechuga Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
The Vieyras are widely regarded as one of Michoacán's very best distillers, but this special bottling, unlike the standard Don Mateo, is Delia's special recipe. Delia Vargas Vieyra is literally the quintessential Mexican matriarch. She welcomed us at the Vinyata when we visited in February and was feeding us immediately. This special batch of Pechuga (despite what the labels say) began with a blend of Cupreata and Cenizo. Roasted over sustainably harvested (no green wood) Pine and Oak with a tiny bit of mesquite as a starter. Crushed manually and ferment...

The patriarche, Ambrosio Martinez Blas, has been working in the palenque since he was a young boy and plans to leave the distillery to his son. The refrescador sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as form further rectifyi...

Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as they form, further rectifying the spirit slightly, but also adding depth. The result are some of...

Berta Vazquez, one of Mexico's few female distillers, made this excpetional espadin from 9-year-old agaves. Horse drawn tahona crushed the agave after cooking in an earthen oven covered with volcanic rocks and fired with oak and guamuchil. Double distilled on copper alambiques in 2018, the resulting spirit is incredibly flavorful. It has a savory scent like a fresh cut rubber tree and a texture and weight that is oily but not resiny. The fruit flavors abound and the finish lasts forever.

El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

Pacifica is the DO approved agave for Sonora's Bacanora, but Lupe sits on the Chihuahua side of the border. He's been making this spirit since before the DO for Bacanora formed in 2000 and he himself refers to it as Bacanora, although you won't find that anywhere on the label.

El Mero Mero is distilled and bottled in San Dionisio Ocotepec by Justino Garcia Cruz. Roasted in traditional pits and pressed with tahona, the Tepeztate is one of the finest around. The fermentation is completed naturally in open wooden vats and all the solids are included in fermentation and the first distillation in small copper pots. The second distillation is completed to proof so no water is added before bottling. The label was created in Oaxaca by the TAGA (a Work Shop of Graphic Artists in the Jataltco neighborhood of Oaxaca City) and is inspired...

The Clande brand celebrates the great Maestro Sotoleros who distill Sotol from the Desert Spoon and Lechuguilla (mezcal) from Agave in Mexico's northern states. Here distillation was prohibited in the 1900s and the Vinata owners were persecuted and incarcerated. Clande celebrates those old masters who continued the tradition in secret - the clandestine distiller. The project supports small local producers and protect the sustainability of the Sotol plant. This special distiller, Bienvenido Fernandez, has been producing Sotol and Lechuguilla (mezcal) for ...

Mezcal Nacional is expertly crafted from sustainably harvested agaves to produce truly premium mezcales that are complex and elegant. Yuu Baal is one of the best new mezcal labels we've seen from Oaxaca in the last few years, originating from the town of San Juan del Rio - one of the region's most well-regarded distillation centers. Madrecuixe is one of the most coveted and complex of the mezcal wild agaves and the immediate aromas from the...

Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) or Candido Reyes makes some of Bruxo's best stuff. His wild harvest Tobala is one of the family's most limited production offerings. The small rare wild agave tend to grow in cooler shaded areas, typically under oak trees. Few other agave feature the incredible finesse and elegance that a solid Tobala exudes, and Tio Conejo is making one of the very best. Exceptional even by Bruxo's wildly high standards.

It all began at John Rexer's Bohemian artist refuge, Café No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala. Opened in 2003, Café No Se became the heart of a thriving expat and artisan community of Antigua. As John's business grew, his interest in Mezcal led him to "import" the mystical spirit in very "creative" ways. His customers took to the spirit and to satisfy the growing demand, he was forced to access less seemly trade routes, hence the name Illegal. Needless to say John has gone legit, but his nose for quality has not changed. I often don't care for oak aged mezc...

From Mezcal Reviews: "Rey Campero Arroqueno is made from the massive agave Arroqueno, which can take over 20 years to reach maturity. This mezcal is made by Romulo in Candelaria Yegole. This mezcal is traditionally produced and is only released in limited quantities due to the small supply of agave Arroqueno. Rey Campero is very conscious of the need to keep this wild agave alive for future generations, so they do not over harvest."

Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadin is the first of what will likely be a series of several “field blends” from maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. The concept of the field blend is that the mezcalero uses whatever agave is ready, rather than waiting for a large amount of a single varietal to make a batch of mezcal.
