5 Sentidos Espadin "Batch ESALB01-19" K&L Exclusive (Alberto Martinez) Santa Catarina Albarradas Uncertified Oaxacan Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
5 Sentidos started as the house spirit of the acclaimed restaurant in Oaxaca city "El Destilado" and has become a platform to uplift numerous traditional producers who otherwise wouldn't be able to sell their products on the international stage. There's a stigma in Mexico of exporting uncertified agave spirits, driven by the idea that mezcal's denomination of origin is synonymous with quality. In fact, the system shuts out many traditional producers and allows countless industrial practices that should be considered inferior. That's why many of the great...

Rey Campero Tepextate + Pulquero K&L Exclusive Single Batch Lot#D5001-TP Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This single batch of Rey Campero mezcal yeilded roughly 264 bottles, half of which remained in Mexico. The other half is exclusive to K&L. Distilled in October 2017, this batch has been resting for 30 months in glass before being bottled. This extended resting process gives this particular batch an increased sense of smoothness and elegance while carrying all of the robust flavors of Tepextate (A. Marmorata) and Pulquero (A. Atrovirens) agaves. This unique field blend of 50% Tepextate ( A. marmorata) and 50% Pulequero (A. atrovirens) was a one time produ...

This unique agave spirit is made in exceedingly small batches from the rare Sierra Negra agave. The character is unlike any other agave spirit. It has a nose reminiscent of Manzanilla sherry and aging under flor. It is salty and bursting with menthol and eucalyptus notes. It's fresh and dusty at the same time. There is a bit of dried fruit and nuttiness. The acidity is tremendous. We're hard pressed to pick favorites among the Cinco Sentidos lineup, but this is it.

Wine Enthusiast: "This single-village mezcal made from wild mountain maguey (agave) has a clean, peppery flavor and high, sweet fragrance with a peppery zing. Tobalá is a special variety of wild mountain maguey (agave) that is smaller in size with larger leaves than the more widely cultivated espadin (sword) or azul (blue) agave varieties. This 143-liter batch (176 bottles) of Jabali (A. Convallis) was produced by maestro mezcalero Alberto Martinez and his son-in-law Reynaldo. The two fo them wild harvested 326 pinas of mature Jabali at altitudes as high as 8000 feet above sea level. The pinas were roased underground in a conical oven with encino oak, dried banana leaves, and acacia leaves for 11 days. Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. Their small community of Mengoli de Morelos happens to have some of Oaxaca's best distillers. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as f...

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

From Mezcal Reviews: "Rey Campero Sierra Negra is a newer release from Casa Sanchez. Due to the extreme limited availability of the agave Sierra Negra, this mezcal was originally only available in Mexico, but a batch first came into the US in 2018. The agave Sierra Negra takes about 25 years to mature and it is no longer commonly used in mezcal due to over harvesting and a general lack of availability."

Originating from the town of Zoquitlan, this is one of the rarer Silvestre agaves and the first we've stocked in the store. The flavor of the Agave recalls Tobala with tons of tropical fruit and citrus. That said there's much more earthy gravel and pepper. Richly textured and ultra dense, the smoke is the perfect frame to the wild flavors of this special plant. Mineral and spice build on the finish leaving you with a long lingering finish.
