2016 Kaiken "Ultra" Malbec Mendoza Las Rocas

94 points James Suckling: "A soft and round-textured red with stones and blackberries. Full body, subtle chocolate and berry character and hazelnut undertones. Turns rich on the finish. A blend of top vineyards. " (05/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Ultra Malbec is heady, ripe and faintly oaky, defining the house style in an approachable entry-level red. (LG)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Aurelio Montes, founder and winemaker of Chile's renowned Montes winery, established Kaiken after falling in love with Argentina's terrior-driven wines. 2015 Zorzal "Eggo -Tinto de Tiza" Mendoza

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The one blend in the Eggo range is the 2015 Eggo Tinto de Tiza, which mixes Malbec with 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in 2,000-liter egg-shaped cement vats where the wine matured for almost one year. This feels quite complete and balanced, with good ripeness while keeping the balance and poise. The palate is juicy and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and a bittersweet finish akin to sour cherries. Very tasty and long. Super. Incredible for the price. 16,000 bottles were filled in January ...Read More »

2015 Catena DV "Tinto Histórico" Mendoza

I like the tea and bark at the finish." (06/2017) 91 points Decanter: "Classy and gently perfumed with aromas of plums, blackberries, cherries, sweet spices and flowers. Excellent fruit concentration with ripe tannins and savoury flavours." 2015 Bodega Mendel "Estate" Malbec Mendoza

93 points James Suckling: "(aged in 40% new oak; from vines averaging 89 years of age): Deep, bright medium ruby. Very ripe on the nose, offering scents of singed black raspberry, licorice and Baker's chocolate. Fatter and less refined than the 2015 Cabernet but the superripe dark berry, plum, spice and chocolate flavors spread out nicely to saturate the palate. Finishes with dense, broad, smooth tannins and very good length." (06/2017) 91 points Vinous: "(aged in 40% new oak; from vines averaging 89 years of age): Deep, bright medium ruby. 2017 Viña Cobos "Felino" Malbec Mendoza

This Malbec is always a terrific value, showcasing Mendoza fruit with a California style, and at a great price. No wonder, since Viña Cobos founder Paul Hobbs is a renowned maker of "cult" Cabernet and Pinot Noir in California. He got his start in Argentina back in the 1990s, consulting for Nicolas Catena.

92 points James Suckling: "Lots of red fruit here with flowers such as roses and lilacs. Medium body, soft and round tannins yet this is refined and vibrant. Linear backbone here. Drink now." (06/2017) K&L Notes: Pascual Toso is one of the oldest wineries in Argentina, founded in Mendoza in 1890 by Italian immigrant Pascual Toso. They make a variety of wines from Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, ranging from prestigious, single-vineyard blends to easy-drinking table wines. 2015 Catena Appellation Malbec La Consulta

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For now the whole appellation range comes from single vineyards, and the 2015 Appellation La Consulta Malbec is sourced from an old 25-hectare vineyard in the banks of the Tunuyán river in the higher part of La Consulta, very close to Altamira, where the soils have clay and boulders from the river. This part of the Valle de Uco in a cool vintage like 2015 produced a serious, cold Malbec, less expressive in the nose but with a mineral sensation and a palate where the tannins are extremely fine. It developed a note ...Read More »

2013 Carmelo Patti Malbec Lujan de Cuyo

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Malbec is also from Perdriel in Luján de Cuyo. Everything here ferments with indigenous yeasts and the wines mature in well-seasoned oak barrels. A traditional, old-style winemaker who is a keeper of the traditions. As he's now selling younger wines like this one, the nose is quite fresh with grapy aromas and notes of red currants that are quite bright and fruit-driven. The palate is medium-bodied and has good acidity that provides liveliness and a tasty finish. A naked, noteworthy Malbec. 12,000 bottles ...Read More »

2015 Catena Appellation Malbec Lunlunta

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I also tasted the 2015 Appellation Lunlunta Malbec, a cooler vintage that resulted in a more austere and stony wine, incredibly mineral for the price range. The nose takes time to take off, and it's more subtle than the 2014, but in the same spectrum of aromas. There is good freshness and elegance here, with ultra-fine tannins and very good acidity. A bargain. (LG) 91+" (12/2016) 90 points Vinous: "Bright, dark red. Sexy scents of blackberry and violet. Juicy and firmly built but not especially fleshy or deep. ...Read More »

2015 Benmarco Malbec Uco Valley

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are more notes of aromatic herbs (thyme mainly) in the nose of the 2015 Benmarco Malbec, from a year with an extra degree of freshness compared with 2014. This is also sourced from Los Chacayes and matured in used oak barrels. The palate shows great balance, very fine tannins and a fine thread of acidity going through its core, lifting it up and giving it length. 2017 Gen del Alma "Ji Ji Ji" Malbec/Pinot Noir Gualtallary

Gen d'A is yet another Michelini brothers project, started by Gerardo Michelini and his wife Andrea Mufatto. They use fruit grown on a single vineyard in Gualtallary (within the Tupungato sub-zone). In contrast with the prior vintage, this 2017 is a bit brawnier, showcasing Malbec perhaps a bit more than Pinot, but still with lovely dark berry fruit flavors and an impressive, sturdy structure. Expressive, interesting wine from the new wave in Argentina!

1994 Bodega Weinert "Tonel Unico" Malbec Mendoza

Given its large, well used assortment of wooden toneles and fouders, housed in a no frills winery in the heart of Mendoza's primera zona, it is easy to compare Weinert to such wine world traditionalist stalwarts as Lopez de Heredia in Rioja, or Lebanon's Chateau Musar (whose wines are brought in by Weinert's US importer). The famous tonel unico bottling is from a single, 60 year old Malbec vineyard, fermented and aged in a single tonel for 24 years prior to bottling. That's right, 24 years! A truly original bottling in the world of wine.

It was bottled after 12 to 15 months in used oak barrels. (LG)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Based in the Zonda Valley of San Juan, a high altitude (nearly 4,000 feet asl) area with extremely rocky soils that are naturally high in potassium, Bodgas Borbore makes fresh, mineral wines in this little known viticultural area of Argentina. 2015 Dominio del Plata "Crios de Susana Balbo" Malbec Mendoza (Previously $12)

Crios means offspring (as in children). Susana selected a word to express the notion that these are wines that haven't quite 'grown up' to the same level of maturity as her more expensive Susana Balbo signature label wines, but they receive the same loving care and attention throughout the winemaking process. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The three hands represent Susana and her two children.

2015 Chakana "Ayni" Malbec Paraje Altamira Uco Valley (Previously $45)

As have several other notable wineries in Argentina, Chakana has recently taken a closer look at their winemaking approach and the overal style of their wines, choosing to create wines with more pronounced mineral expression, higher acidity, perhaps a bit less richly fruited and absolutely less marked by new oak than in the past.
