Bowmore "Old Malt Cask" 21 Year Old K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Bowmore offers one of the most unusual dichotomies in Scotland. They make some of the finest whisky available, they floor malt roughly a quarter of their barley in-house, they have vast stocks of exceptional whisky, yet the core expressions from the distillery always seem a touch lack luster. They're filtered and proofed way back, sure, but the raw materials are so good that you wouldn't expect it present so glaringly. This is where the independent cask market thrives. The freedom to bottle at full proof and without filtration or additives allows for the...

2013 Bowmore 5 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Refill Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
We already know the greatness that can be young Islay. It's always a surprise the depth of flavor that can come from a punchy 5 or 6 year Caol Ila, Staoisha or Octomore. But we have never been offered such a youthful example of this famous old distillery. For me, Bowmore is truly one of the greats. Hand malting more than 25% of the production and responsible for some of true legends. The modern distillery bottlings tend to keep things VERY safe. But the Bowmore we come across on the independent market these days is almost always exceptional. I'm convince...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot-still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: What happens when you take one of the great single malt distillers of all time, put him in a room with an old Sc...

91 points Whisky Advocate: "Distilled from Scottish barley, this is the first permanent age-statement Port Charlotte bottling. First and second-fill American oak and French wine casks were used for aging. Rock pools, lemon juice, caramel, but little overt peat on the nose. The palate boasts big orchard fruit notes, smoky coconut, and brine. Again, the peat is quite muted. Long and spicy in the drying, peaty finish. (GS, Fall 2018)" K&L Notes: The first permanent release of Port Charlotte 10 Year. Apparently, they've got enough whisky to keep this going ...

Light, clean, fresh Bruichladdich whisky at 100 proof, made from entirely Scottish barley. The new Classic Laddie drinks more like the old Rocks expression with its fruity demeanor and profile that was definitely meant for a glass of ice. There's just a hint of phenolic action on the finish with a lovely coating of sweet grains and soft vanilla. Well done!

Single malt whisky has the unique ability to capture and preserve a snapshot in time. This edition of our Black Art, 07.1, is symbolic of a moment in time that should not be forgotten. Signifying the end of an era, 1994 was the year Bruichladdich was closed for what could have been the last time.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Islay single malt was finished in Sherry casks, delivering a ruddy hue and brisk, smoky scent with a hint of sea air salinity. Peat and iodine lead the palate, evolving into mouthwatering olive brine, kalamata olive and unsweetened chocolate, finishing long and dry with hints of ash, clove and black pepper. A splash of water integrates the cocoa and peat tones. (KN)" (12/2019) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Darkest now has an age statement of 15 years old. This new release is an improvement from the original Darkest, both ...

Valinch & Mallet descend from a long tradition of Italian bottlers of fine single malt and rum. This tradition, one of the first outside of Scotland to truly value the unique and sublime potential that single cask spirits offer, is becoming the norm for highly engaged consumers around the world. The two men who founded the company, Fabrio Ermoli and David Romano, came together from two very different professions over this common passion. This shared belief that selecting a single cask is not a science, but in fact art. It's an expression of one's tastes ...

That pure Islay barley flavor--even more so, as it's organically grown! The distillery notes: "The whisky we distill from the organic barley of Mid Coul reflects the complex natural flavours of the landscape. Just as our stillmen refuse to abandon the traditional crafts of distillation in favour of automation or industrialisation, so farmer William Rose rejects the use of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilisers. Crop rotation is key. Our barley must take its turn in a seven year farm cycle that also produces organic cattle, sheep, oats, beans,...

The heavily peated malt for this whisky came from three farmers in Islay. Port Charlotte is a small coastal town about two miles south of Bruichladdich Distillery where this whisky is produced in a Victorian era still house. Notes from the distiller: "The sweetness of the oak and the barley are matched beautifully by the dry peat smoke. Islay grown, the barley seems more distinct and brings through the peach and apple typical of our spirit."

The very last casks from 1984 distilled at the Bruichladdich distillery by previous owners and retained in their inventory throughout the distillery's rebirth. Matured in first-fill bourbon casks for 32 years before being bottled at a natural cask strength of 44.7%. Only 3,000 bottles were produced of this very special and rare offering.

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Perfect for peat-lovers: This burnished gold single malt leads with peat smoke on nose and palate, though it’s laced with mellow hints of honey, ginger and clove sweet heat, finishing long and drying with—you guessed it, plenty of peat. (KN)" (12/2019) K&L Notes: The distillery is located in the capital of Islay on the shores of Loch Indaal. Founded in 1779, it is the oldest on this majestic and windswept island. It is one of an ever-decreasing handful of distilleries that still produce their own floor-malted barley. The com...

The final seven casks from the '86 vintage aged in Oloroso sherry butts until being transfered to fresh Fernando di Castilla Pedro Ximinez casks for 4 years of additional maturation. This tiny release of some of Bruichladdich's oldest stocks are proof that the unpeated Islay can age just as gracefully as some of her smokey neighbors. Only 4200 bottles of this special whisky were produced and sold exclusively in the US so expect the international collectors to be on the hunt.

From the bottler: "Here we have another whisky from the excellent Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, but you might note that we’ve spelt their name incorrectly on the label - we’ve written it as “Port Charlotte”. Ah, you see, that is because Bruichladdich use the Port Charlotte name for whisky they’ve produced using heavily peated barley (though not super-extreme-silly levels of peat - that’s their Octomore bottlings). As such, we’ve given centre stage to the 5 molecules that produce the phenolic compounds in peated whisky."
