It's products like these that make me question why Armagnac hasn't completely taken over the back bar. The honest truth is that they're not able to produce massive quantities with a similar quality and price ratio. It's not that the grapes aren't there, but it's simply not the most obvious business decision for small producers. By selling lots of young eau-de-vie at a low price, they're robbing themselves of the opportunity to age the stuff and demand significantly higher prices down the road. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of cheap young Arm...

93 points Vinous: "At 20 years old, scoured from barrels throughout Bas-Armagnac, this is the finest of Darroze’s blends. Nutty, with prune, dried apricot and spice, with freshness throughout. Bas-Armagnac, 40% abv. (JW)" (07/2018) K&L Notes: Absolutely stunning Armagnac with incredible richness, spice, and balance. Big wood, lots of spice and vanilla, and a rustic fruit character with seamless execution.

2002 Domaine de Baraillon 16 Year Old Folle Blanche Bas-Armagnac (750ml)
Top Pick!
We've been carrying the Baraillon Armagnacs for three years now and it's been a match made in heaven for K&L, the Claverie family, and our customers—we're their biggest account and their biggest fans. There's something special about walking into the tasting room at Baraillon, which is really just a little hut next to their home with plastic furniture and humble offerings (like fresh fois gros straight from the farm next door). Mr. Baraillon will come in from feeding the pigs wearing rubber boots, while his daughter Laurence stands by quietly, yet does mo...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Maple syrup in color, this has a toffee aroma and flavor, along with notes of dry cocoa, espresso, spice and dried orange peel on the finish. " (12/2012) K&L Notes: An absolutely incredible value from this exceptional producer in Bas-Armagnac. Darroze became famous by sourcing top quality single estate single vintage armagnacs from small producers across Bas-Armagnac. His offerings differe immensley from one another and because of the extreme variation he created the Grands Assemblage. The minimum age of 30 years is list on ...

The special selection from our friends down at Bar Agricole. The picked this excellent Folle Blanche from a wonderful producer in Les Landes, Domaine du Miquer, run by Jacques Lasserre, a veteran of the business and former itinerant distiller. This man is a master of the still, but he also takes great care in the vineyards, favoring the hard work required to cultivate the wonderful and difficult Folle Blanche varietal. He knows every aspect of production from the vineyard to the bottle, and you can tell it right away when you taste his brandy. They are p...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From 'the oldest House in Armagnac' comes a well-balanced sipper that's reminiscent of Bourbon with its deep amber color; its rich, sweet caramel note; and bold finish that tastes of maple-butter sprinkled with clove and cinnamon. (KN)" (12/2012) 93 points Vinous: "Dartigalongue’s XO is burly, with cologne-like aromas, and surprisingly complex for its youth (10-year-old brandies in the blend). Buttery, with flavors of dried plum, candied ginger and walnut, and a spicy finish of clove and cardamom. A Rye drinker’s Armagnac. B...

From the Producer: At Domaine Tariquet, our Bas-Armagnacs are made exclusively from the grapes harvested from the family estate’s vineyards. The distillation takes place in authentic wood fired armagnac alambic using the traditional continuous distillation process. Our hundred-year-old cellar quietly safeguard our barrels or “pieces”, as they are called. Each variety and each vintage are distilled and aged separately for the first years. Vinous: "Aged for 8 years, Clos Martin VSOP is a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc. The nose is muted, a whiff of ginger and crème brulée, but in the mouth big flavors of dried fruit, cocoa, and toffee emerge. Bas-Armagnac, 40% abv. (JW)" (07/2018)

Distillation of eau de vie at Chateau Ravignan dates back officially to at least 1791 during the French Revolution, but by historical account back to 1731. That’s when the ancestor of Josselin de Ravignan purchased the estate and declared on an official record that some of wine made from the property’s grapes would be used for distillation. At that time, however, it wasn’t known as Armagnac. Distilled spirits were used for a number of medicinal purposes, poured into wine for fortification, and given to sailors to help disinfect their water supplies durin...

A harmonious and luxurious blend of vintage armagnacs from 21 to 43 years of age. Named for Vital Du Four, later known as Cardinal du Four, who was noted for his intellect. His celebrated book about his remarkable discoveries has been housed in the Vatican library since the 14th century. His words were the first acknowledgement and celebrate internationally the incredible spirit of Gascogne, "It enlivens the spirit, partaken in moderation, recalls the past to memory, renders men joyous, preserves youth and retards senility. And when retained in the mouth...

From the producer: Once distilled in a copper alambic, the wine gives birth to a transparent eau-de-vie. Kept in tanks and not in casks, the eau-de-vie preserves its crystalline color and benefits from the Blanche Armagnac A.O.C. appellation. At Domaine Tariquet, it is exclusively produced from the Folle Blanche grape, preferred for its finesse and aromatic potential. To be discovered at room temperature, well chilled, neat or in a cocktail. Superb with raw or smoked salmon, caviar, blue cheese or served as a palate cleanser between courses, locally kn...
