92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good dark ruby; slightly hazy. Sappy aromas of black cherry, currant, espresso and earth. Silky and stuffed with fruit. Acidity (from the substantial Petit Verdot component?) is still a bit pronounced, but this wine has the sheer extract to harmonize with bottle aging. Quite powerfully structured and very long on the aftertaste, though not as subtle as the regular '96. (ST)" (06/1999)
