Stephan Reinhardt writes: "Helmut Dönnhoff can be really proud. His son Cornelius, responsible for the wines in recent years, has bottled probably the best wine series in the history of the domaine."
Price: $29.99

From one of the greatest Riesling producers in the world, this 2018 estate bottling is a gorgeous example of the character of Nahe Riesling. Fruit and spice intermingle with stony soil tones in an utterly charming wine. The easy-going nature of the 2018 vintage also comes through in the wine's openly inviting profile. You could easily lay this down for a while, but why wait? It's awesome now.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Representing one of his only wines that could be salvaged from the hail that ravaged this village, Richter’s 2011 Veldenzer Elisenberg Riesling Kabinett displays fresh lime, pear, and apple on a silken palate and finishes with simple but bright and refreshing juiciness – a wine so frank and pure as to entirely belie the beating that Veldenz’s vines took in August. Plan to enjoy it by 2015. (DS)" (04/2013) Wine & Spirits: "From a vineyard on the south bank of the Mosel, east of Brauneberg, this is as fresh and floral as a...

91-92 points John Gilman: "There are only two Kabinetten from the Scharzhofberg this year, with an old vine bottling also produced. The “regular” Kabinett (this sobriquet seems rather inappropriate when discussing an Egon Müller wine!) is 9.5 percent in alcohol, carries around fifty grams per liter of residual sugar and has acids of 8.5 grams and very low pH this year. The wine is young and very promising, offering up scents of apple, lime, petrol, slate, wild yeasts and an exotic touch of violet in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, ful...

91 points James Suckling: "Attractive aromas of flowers and stone fruit here,. This has a very fresh feel. The palate is succulent, precise and elegantly delivered with some honey, ripe peaches and hints of mangoes. Seamless, concentrated and dry. Drink now." (09/2019)

92 points John Gilman: "We do not see too many Kabinetten bottlings from the Braune Kupp vineyard these days, as this is a lower vineyard down by the river, and therefore really well positioned for botrytis, but in 2018 Egon Müller was able to produce a bit of Kabinetten as well. This is a lovely wine in the making, offering up a very stylish nose of pear, a touch of white cherry, fresh mint, slate, white flowers and a lovely base of slate. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish, long and complex, with a fine core of fruit, impressive focus and grip and...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a warm parcel named after the nearby community of Birkenfeld whose nobility once owned it, the “two star” 2006 Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese smells of peach preserves, spiced apple, and root beer. It is opulently rich and creamy with honey and caramel leavened by lime citricity. While lacking the mineral interest, clarity or sense of weightlessness conveyed by this year’s “one star” Spatlese, this represents a refined expression of very pure fruit and noble rot and should be capable of at l...

91 points Decanter: "This is one of the most widely distributed wines of the Dönnhoff estate in the Nahe, and it showcases their pristine, clear-cut but expressive style of Riesling. Fermented in large oak but matured in stainless steel, it once again is a celebration of vibrant citrus, lemon, lime and grapefruit but with an added bounce of juicy tropical fruit at the centre. It displays the signature Dönnhoff tautness. (AK)" (04/2019) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Tonschiefer was also bottled a few days prior to my arrival at the estate, but again,...

95 points James Suckling: " Resounding clarity of aromas and flavors here with bright lemons, yuzu, white pepper, cloves and orange zest. Immaculately mineral and fine on the medium-bodied palate with driving acidity and deeply cast, citrus and green-fruit flavors. The sweetness is almost an afterthought, but it’s certainly there. Stunning. " (10/2019) 93 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Juffer Auslese has not botrytis in it, as it was made from beautiful golden and shriveled berries this year. The wine is a beauty in the making, offering up a very pure a...

94 points James Suckling: "Almost baroque in its lushness (everything from ripe banana, apricot and cassis), but there's also a firm acidity behind all the extravagance that makes the finish breathtakingly fresh. A powerful wine that is begging for you to pair it with shrimp and chili. The acidity finish is like whiplash. " (07/2017) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Ohligsberger Spätlese is very intense and fruity on the nose, provided with ripe Riesling and wet slate flavors. Round, lush and mouthfilling, this is a beautifully fine, ...

From the producer: "The Berres family is recorded to have resided and worked in the vineyards of Ürzig since the year 1510. Markus Berres, 21st generation, has taken the helm of this prestigious Mittel Mosel estate beginning with the 2004 vintage, and is in the process of effecting one of the most significant renaissances in recent German wine history. Upon secularization of the Mosel by Napoleon, one of the first great private wine estates to be established was that of Peter Nicolay in Ürzig, including the finest sites in Ürzig, Erden, Wehlen, Graach a...

91-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Goldtröpfchen Kabinett is attractively reductive yet super precise and clear on the nose where ripe, concentrated white peach aromas are displayed. The palate is ripe, lush and salty-piquant, with lots of gusto and sensual character but also finesse, elegance and precision. There are coolish flinty notes on the nose and palate. This a gorgeous wine with very good length, energy and concentration. From lower, flatter and warmer plots with bigger, less concentrated grapes. Tasted as a sample some days b...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese is very clear and nicely reductive on the flinty and limey nose. Lush, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a beautifully mineral and complex Sonnenuhr with a long and intensely aromatic but always refined and refreshing mineral finish. This is a fabulous Spätlese from the Juffer. (SR)" (04/2018) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "This feels as stony and sculpted as the slope it grows on, a particularly vertiginous section of the south-facing Juffer hillside. It n...

95 points James Suckling: "This is still a bit closed, but the lemon-curd and lemon-jelly character on the nose, the finely etched flavors on the medium-bodied palate, then the very long and creamy yet super-clean finish, all announce a great dry riesling. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (09/2011) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Very aromatic, with a complex array of floral aromas, while the palate shows hints of jasmine, rambutan, persimmon and coriander. Silky in texture and expansive, with emerging acidity and minerality midpalate that bri...

Wine Spectator: "Direct but lovely to drink, with well-integrated acidity and notes of peach. The finish is inviting and moderately long. (AZ, Web Only-2019)"

95 points John Gilman: "Oliver Haag’s 2018 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spätlese was clearly one of the finest examples of this Prädikat that I tasted during my ten day visit to the region and I cannot recall ever tasting a better young vintage of Spätlese from this estate! The brilliant bouquet soars from the glass in a youthful blend of lime, pear, gorgeous, very salty slate minerality, violets, bee pollen and an exotic touch of fresh mint in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, laser-like and tensile, with beautiful complexity and filigree, ...

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sourced from old vines, the 2018 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese was harvested in the third week of October as the very last "regular" wine (so 3.5 weeks after the Kabinett). It is based on completely healthy fruit and was vinified entirely in traditional fuders. Offering a deep and flinty bouquet, this is a lush, elegant, highly refined and stimulating Spätlese with a salty-piquant finish. Tasted from the cask in March 2019. (SR)" (06/2019) 92 points John Gilman: "The grapes for the Elisenberger Spätlese wer...

Stephan Reinhardt writes: "The course for the next generation has also been set. Christian Vogt (previously Karthäuserhof, Ruwer) is the new cellar master, starting with the 2017 harvest. In order to face the challenges of fungal diseases and other infections, Selbach (vineyard manager: Frank Prüm) is changing over to "gentle pruning" that is reducing the cutting surfaces and respecting the crowns of the vine. By a special pruning technique, a healthier and longer life of the vines can be ensured. Grape varieties such as Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir wer...

91 points James Suckling: "This is a blend of many parcels of younger vines and higher-elevation plantings and it has a very fresh, vibrant and vivid lemon-citrus nose with a succulent, smooth and intense palate. Elegant and very impressive. Drink now." (09/2019)

94 points John Gilman: "The 1976 Scharzhofberger Spätlese continues to drink beautifully well, and amazingly still has many years of beautiful life ahead of it. Both the nose and the palate have begun to dry a bit at age thirty, and now offer about Kabinett level sweetness, but with all of the haunting complexity and breed that thirty years in the bottle can bring in a wine built to age. The bouquet is a beautiful mélange of lemon curd, baked peaches, new leather, sweet corn, stony minerality and a nice topnote of lavender. On the palate the wine is medi...

92 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Rausch Kabinett was scheduled for bottling on April 1st and was showing beautifully at the time of my visit. The bouquet is already showing some of the classical filigree of this Prädikat level at its best, offering up scents of grapefruit, pear, salty slate, white flowers, a hint of Rausch mossiness and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, crisp and complex, with fine mineral drive, excellent focus and grip and the delicate stop on the long finish of a classic example of Kabinett. Fine juice in the m...

John Gilman: "The 2018 Scharzhof QbA was bottled a bit earlier than anything else in the cellars this year, as the mise for this wine was on the last day of February of 2019. The wine carries twenty-eight grams of residual sugar this year and is 10.5 percent alcohol, so it is a bit fuller-bodied in personality than the 2017. However, the wine is lovely in 2018, offering up a classic nose of green apple, petrol, pear, wild yeasts and a fine base of slate minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full and nicely mineral in personality, with good, broad s...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Kirschheck Spätlese is a lovely example of the vintage, offering up a very pretty bouquet of white cherries, apple, wild yeasts, a touch of sea salts, bee pollen, apple blossoms and a superb base of minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and dancing, with a juicy core, great cut and grip and a long, vibrant and perfectly balanced finish. This is going to be delicious to drink in its youth, but will have no trouble keeping several decades." (08/2018) 93 points James Suckling: "A juicy and elegant wine th...

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From the two oldest plots (80-90 years old and 120 years old), the fuder-fermented 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese offers great precision and aromas of tropical fruit intertwined with very fine slate on the nose. On the palate, the wine is mouth-filling and salty-piquant, with mango and slate flavors on the racy finish. This is dangerous stuff, very dangerous, yet it's also tight and tensioned. This is, for the moment, the finest and most stimulating Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Dangerous. Really dangerous. T...

93 points James Suckling: "The whiff of smoke gives the cassis nose of this wine an extra dimension. Concentrated and racy with a dangerous amount of energy. So juicy and vibrant with a long and very clean finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. " (09/2011) 90 points Vinous: "Intense black currant, elderflower, gooseberry and grapefruit on the nose suggest a Scheurebe-Sauvignon meld, and notes of huckleberry, juniper, and sage on the firm but oily palate reinforce that impression. Even by Scheurebe or Sauvignon standards, this represents ...

94 points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 20 19. The 2018er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese was made from clean fruit harvested at a massive 110° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, pineapple, yellow peach, apricot blossom and almond cream. The wine develops a gorgeous feel of almond cream, pineapple and grapefruit zest on the beautifully playful palate. The finish is nicely fruity and full of zest fruits." (06/2019)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Tight and focused, with peach, sweet corn, vanilla custard and lime notes. Remains elegant, though rich, with good harmony and length. Shows its potential on the aftertaste. Drink now through 2028. (BS)" (04/2008) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese Eisendell emphasizes melons, pears, and honey, giving a rich, lush, drippingly juicy and sweet, yet delicate palate impression, and finishing with impressive refinement and wet stone, smoky, tingling intimations of min...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Alte Reben has a bright citrus color and offers a clear, intense and very elegant nose with fine slate and herbal aromas that are perfectly intertwined with highly elegant Riesling notes. This is a pretty bright and charming Domprobst that is often rather dark, coolish, flintier and not that delicate. The palate is lush, round and sweet but also fresh and mineral, with tension, piquancy and a lovely salty pull. A gorgeous Domprobst with 11.5% alcohol and 21 o...

93pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 09 19. The 2018er Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese was made from partially (40%) botrytized grapes harvested at 105° Oechsle on very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (109 g/l). It offers a complex nose made of apricot, brown sugar, baked pineapple and herbs. The wine develops some attractive flavors of almond cream, pineapple and coconut on the unctuous yet also comparatively zesty palate. It leaves some nicely complex notes of honeyed almond, pear, pineapple and apricot in t...

96 points James Suckling: "This is so exotic but it is also super clean with a ravishing elegance. A very long and complex finish with enormous minerality. Drink or hold." (06/2018) 92 points John Gilman: "The Maximin Herrenberg vineyard is the lower section, closest to the Mosel River, of the larger Herrenberg vineyard in the village of Longuich. This bottling is made from ungrafted vines planted in 1896, as the name suggests, and is 12.5 percent octane in the 2017 vintage. This section of the vineyard is red slate, rather than the blue slate found in...

96 points James Suckling: "This may still be slightly funky from the wild ferment, but it's a Mosel masterpiece. It’s packed with an entire spectrum of fruits ranging from apples to tropical fruits. Delicate herbal notes, too. The major concentration shows at the extremely long, complex finish. Better from 2019 and with long aging potential. " (06/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Spätlese is from a warmer but slatey part of the Hofberg closer to the Mosel and was picked in October (later than the Kabinet...

90 points Vinous: "This is a terrific example of Riesling relishing what I like to call 'hidden sweetness.' The legally halbtrocken level of residual sugar present here not only beautifully supports the flavors of bright, luscious key lime, grapefruit and white peach, but also seems to set off the wine’s mouthwatering sense of salinity (a cleaner and more purely mineral salinity than that expressed in the corresponding legally trocken generic). Sage and basil lend pungent and cooling notes. A silken feel is in itself alluring while also offering a lovely...

94 points James Suckling: "The right edge of reductive funk here and a very fresh array of white-nectarine and lime aromas and succulent flavors. Sublime freshness and drinkability here. Screw cap." (04/2019) 92 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Juffer Kabinett had been bottled a couple of weeks ahead of Prowein and was showing very well at the time of my visit. The wine comes in at nine percent alcohol, with 7.7 grams per liter of acidity and forty-five grams of residual sugar this year. The wine is lovely and really quite classical in its Kabinett sensib...

Fürst makes this easy-going white to be delightful as a picinic wine or aperitif. It is made in a feinherb style which means it's a whisker off-dry, but to be honest doesn't show any notable sweetness at all. Elbling is a historic vinifera grape varietal that was cultivated primarily in the Mosel Valley since Roman times and eventually spread to dominate the extensive plantings of medieval Germany. Very few producers are left making wines from this varietal but Fürst take theirs very seriously and this is a fantastic bottle of wine. Ultimately quaffable,...

94 points James Suckling: "Slightly funky from the wild ferment, but this also has concentrated peaches and blackcurrants. Coupled with succulent sweetness, this makes a serious statement. Needs some time to open up, but it will be very seductive from 2019. Drink or hold. This has long-term aging potential. " (06/2018) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Goldtröpfchen Spätlese is super clear, bright and fresh on the subtle and elegant nose. This is a lean, highly elegant, firm and grippy, persistent and concentrated Spätlese in the Feinh...

Importer's notes: "Müller-Thurgau was created in Switzerland in the 19th century as a hardy, early-ripening grape for table wines. It is now the most widely grown grape in Germany. Borell-Diehl makes it in the classic style: fresh, crisp, limey, and ridiculously easy to drink. A modest 12% alcohol with great acids and no oak (of course), it beats Pinot Grigio at its own game, offering great refreshment in a dry style but also the unique fruitiness of a cool climate aromatic grape. Did we mention it’s in a LITER? 33% more wine!"
Price: $14.99

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "It’s the glorious pale gold color which sets this wine as a star. That color is the forerunner of the rich botrytis and honey aromas, touched with flavors of tropical fruits and mangoes. It is rich, balanced and intense." (01/2004) Wine Spectator: "Ripe and exotic, featuring apricot, honey, spice and citrus notes, very appealing and tasty now. It has firm acidity and an open texture, followed by a long finish... (Web Only-2003)"

A small negociant operation, J&H Selbach works closely with a select group of growers who are nearly all under contract allowing them to closely control the winemaking process and ensure quality. According to importer Terry Theise: "Every single one of these wines is sophisticated and has vinosity and most important, moderate residual sugar for the genre."

90pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 06 19. The 2018er Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett was harvested at 83° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (50 g/l). It offers a comparatively fresh nose of red berry fruits, greengage, apricot blossom, creamy almond and smoky elements. The wine has the juicy and creamy presence of a full-on Spätlese on the nicely playful palate and leaves a mouthwatering feel in the long finish. This may be a Spätlese and not a crispy Kabinett but it is a very nice Spätlese! 2026-2038." (08/2019)
Price: $17.99

98 points James Suckling: "A star is born! Stunning white-peach and herbal nose, then a sensational combination of ripeness and freshness that whips this forward like a jockey driving a racehorse towards the winning post. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certification. This has enormous aging potential. Drink or hold. (NS)" (09/2018) 93 points John Gilman: "The first example of GG from the Höllenpfad was made from a parcel of forty year-old vines in the filet section of the vineyard known as Mühlenberg and comes in with a similar alcohol and...

Wine Spectator: "A fruit-forward dry white sporting currant and apricot notes underscored by fine minerality and zesty acidity, this is seductive, and a perfect intro to the drier side of German Riesling. Drink now through 2024. (AZ)" (05/2019)
