Stephan Reinhardt writes: "Helmut Dönnhoff can be really proud. His son Cornelius, responsible for the wines in recent years, has bottled probably the best wine series in the history of the domaine."

From one of the greatest Riesling producers in the world, this 2018 estate bottling is a gorgeous example of the character of Nahe Riesling. Fruit and spice intermingle with stony soil tones in an utterly charming wine. The easy-going nature of the 2018 vintage also comes through in the wine's openly inviting profile. You could easily lay this down for a while, but why wait? It's awesome now.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mellow notes of ripe apple have a wonderfully spiky lemon headiness. The more air this gets, the purer the lemon appears. The palate benefits from that same lemon directness. The body is taut and streamlined, seamed with fruit but all bundled around that concentrated lightning lemon core. A full-fruited, wonderfully direct expression of Riesling, the finish on this wine is taut, refreshing and dry. Drink now through 2030. (AK)" (09/2018) 91 points Vinous: "Dark straw with golden tinges. Deep, honeyed aromas of chamomile, pom...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "A selection of Riesling named for the estate’s founder, this grows on clay-limestone soils, mostly around the village of Eguisheim. It’s a rich wine with enough limestone abrasion to the acidity that it feels clean and fresh, the generously concentrated flavors of lemon and golden apple edged with bitter notes of quinine, dandelion greens and lemon zest. Tingling with energy." (04/2018) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Delightful peachy notes define the fruity friendly nose. The palate adds zesty lemon to this rich fruit to create...

92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of sliced apple, apricot and pear follow through to a full body, bright acidity and a stone, slate and light sea salt aftertaste. Solid white. Drink now. " (10/2017) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A pleasantly fruity hint of russet-pear peel hits the nose first, followed by notes of lemon. Likewise, the palate combines tart freshness and fruity juiciness. The light palate is brisk and dry, showing a clean finish, with just a touch of zestiness." (09/2017) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Riesling Zöbing is a med...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Representing one of his only wines that could be salvaged from the hail that ravaged this village, Richter’s 2011 Veldenzer Elisenberg Riesling Kabinett displays fresh lime, pear, and apple on a silken palate and finishes with simple but bright and refreshing juiciness – a wine so frank and pure as to entirely belie the beating that Veldenz’s vines took in August. Plan to enjoy it by 2015. (DS)" (04/2013) Wine & Spirits: "From a vineyard on the south bank of the Mosel, east of Brauneberg, this is as fresh and floral as a...

91-92 points John Gilman: "There are only two Kabinetten from the Scharzhofberg this year, with an old vine bottling also produced. The “regular” Kabinett (this sobriquet seems rather inappropriate when discussing an Egon Müller wine!) is 9.5 percent in alcohol, carries around fifty grams per liter of residual sugar and has acids of 8.5 grams and very low pH this year. The wine is young and very promising, offering up scents of apple, lime, petrol, slate, wild yeasts and an exotic touch of violet in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, ful...

91 points James Suckling: "Attractive aromas of flowers and stone fruit here,. This has a very fresh feel. The palate is succulent, precise and elegantly delivered with some honey, ripe peaches and hints of mangoes. Seamless, concentrated and dry. Drink now." (09/2019)

96 points James Suckling: "A phenomenal wine with roasted pineapple, dried pear, apple and mineral. Full body, incredible depth of fruit and liveliness with electrifying acidity. It goes on for minutes. Production was half. " (09/2015) 95 points Vinous: "Bright, pale straw-yellow. Deep, intense aromas of yellow apple, mirabelle, jasmine and anise. Dense, suave and tangy, showing a lovely light touch and noteworthy lift to its flavors of apple, pear, minerals and flowers thanks to eye-watering acidity. Finishes cool, vibrant and palate-staining, with li...

92 points John Gilman: "We do not see too many Kabinetten bottlings from the Braune Kupp vineyard these days, as this is a lower vineyard down by the river, and therefore really well positioned for botrytis, but in 2018 Egon Müller was able to produce a bit of Kabinetten as well. This is a lovely wine in the making, offering up a very stylish nose of pear, a touch of white cherry, fresh mint, slate, white flowers and a lovely base of slate. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish, long and complex, with a fine core of fruit, impressive focus and grip and...

96 points James Suckling: "Beautiful clarity of aromas in the grapefruit and lime-peel zone. Then abundant stony, flinty, wet rock complexity. Immensely fresh palate, this is full of life and has a very long, seamless run to a dry, flavorsome finish. Drink or hold. *Top 100 New Zealand Wines of 2018*" (10/2018) K&L Notes: #21 on James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of New Zealand 2018. Rippon was the dream of Rolfe and Lois Mills, pioneers of wine in Central Otago. The first commercial vintage was produced in 1988. Winemaker Nick Mills, son of Rolfe and Lois...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a warm parcel named after the nearby community of Birkenfeld whose nobility once owned it, the “two star” 2006 Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese smells of peach preserves, spiced apple, and root beer. It is opulently rich and creamy with honey and caramel leavened by lime citricity. While lacking the mineral interest, clarity or sense of weightlessness conveyed by this year’s “one star” Spatlese, this represents a refined expression of very pure fruit and noble rot and should be capable of at l...

95 points Bob Campbell: "From one of Marlborough's oldest vineyards this dry, but certainly not austere, riesling has punchy lime, citrus blossom and subtle oyster-shell flavours. Quite a concentrated riesling that's delicious now but should develop well in bottle." (11/2019) 95 points Sam Kim: "Offering terrific precision and clarity, the wine shows delicate aromas of fresh apple, lemon peel and lime sorbet on the nose, leading to a brilliantly focused palate that's bright and persistent. It's exquisitely composed and styled with classic structure, en...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Wet stone and fresh lemon are faint but distinct on the nose. A pure lemon flavor streaks across the slender, taut palate, with a comet-like spray of freshness. This wine is dry and, if it weren't for juicy glimpses of ripe lemon, would be almost austere. (AK)" (08/2018) 91 points Vinous: "Pale straw with green tinges. Lemon, minerals and fresh herbs on the nose and palate. Juicy and vibrant, delivering zingy, lemony bite on the long finish. Boasts lively but harmonious acidity that really extends the fresh citrus and stony ...

93 points Wine Spectator: "The gorgeous, mineral-laced nose leads to a mouthwatering range of Honeycrisp apple, nectarine, ginger pastry cream, lemon curd, smoke and star anise flavors in this long and creamy white. Supple, displaying beautiful tension from the finely meshed, racy acidity." (12/2018) 92 points James Suckling: "Lots of spice, clove and lemon-rind character on the nose. Full-bodied, layered and flavorful with plenty of citrus and spice on the aftertaste. Yet remains subtle and fine. " (12/2016) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Slight smoke mixes in the nose of this wine, with lifted mandarin-peel notes. The dry palate is streamlined and has uncommon lightness. It's weightless but concentrated, with full and bright citrus lift and a lively core brimming with lemon, bergamot and lime. The finish is wonderfully clean. This will drink well through 2024, at least. (AK)" (11/2016) 90 points James Suckling: "In contrast to the “Classic” this is still quite closed, due to the influence of the clay-rich Keuper marl soil of the Schoenenbourg. Dominant aroma...

91 points Decanter: "This is one of the most widely distributed wines of the Dönnhoff estate in the Nahe, and it showcases their pristine, clear-cut but expressive style of Riesling. Fermented in large oak but matured in stainless steel, it once again is a celebration of vibrant citrus, lemon, lime and grapefruit but with an added bounce of juicy tropical fruit at the centre. It displays the signature Dönnhoff tautness. (AK)" (04/2019) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Tonschiefer was also bottled a few days prior to my arrival at the estate, but again,...

95 points James Suckling: " Resounding clarity of aromas and flavors here with bright lemons, yuzu, white pepper, cloves and orange zest. Immaculately mineral and fine on the medium-bodied palate with driving acidity and deeply cast, citrus and green-fruit flavors. The sweetness is almost an afterthought, but it’s certainly there. Stunning. " (10/2019) 93 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Juffer Auslese has not botrytis in it, as it was made from beautiful golden and shriveled berries this year. The wine is a beauty in the making, offering up a very pure a...

94 points James Suckling: "Almost baroque in its lushness (everything from ripe banana, apricot and cassis), but there's also a firm acidity behind all the extravagance that makes the finish breathtakingly fresh. A powerful wine that is begging for you to pair it with shrimp and chili. The acidity finish is like whiplash. " (07/2017) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Ohligsberger Spätlese is very intense and fruity on the nose, provided with ripe Riesling and wet slate flavors. Round, lush and mouthfilling, this is a beautifully fine, ...

While widely known for crafting classic Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet, Chateau Montelena also crafts this crisp Riesling from remote Potter Valley in Mendocino County. It's typically off-dry in style, like Kabinett, but certainly isn't "sweet." Notes from winemaker Matt Crafton: "Ripe apple and pear along with a touch of ginger initially dominate the subtle tropical and floral aromas that characterize this Riesling. With some patience, however, the bouquet transitions to rose petals, fresh peach, and pineapple, all of which should be familiar to t...

From the producer: "The Berres family is recorded to have resided and worked in the vineyards of Ürzig since the year 1510. Markus Berres, 21st generation, has taken the helm of this prestigious Mittel Mosel estate beginning with the 2004 vintage, and is in the process of effecting one of the most significant renaissances in recent German wine history. Upon secularization of the Mosel by Napoleon, one of the first great private wine estates to be established was that of Peter Nicolay in Ürzig, including the finest sites in Ürzig, Erden, Wehlen, Graach a...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Opening with a lovely mix of apricot, green apple and petrol, this wine offers enviable structure, complexity and balance. Lush on the midpalate, it never loses focus, retaining mineral-like stoniness and linear, fresh acidity. *Editors' Choice* (VB)" (12/2019) 91 points James Suckling: "Grapefruit, kiwi fruit, fresh cloves, spices and smoke are the main attraction on the nose. A tangy core of stone and green fruit is supported by crunchy acidity on the palate, which is medium-to full-bodied and delicious. " (05/2019) K&L...

The Lafond vineyard is a valued source of fruit for such Riesling revivalists as Tatomer and Maiden Stoen. Santa Barbara Winery's 2016 version has a pH of 3.03. Winemaker's comments: "This is the last crop from our old Block of Riesling. Planted in 1972, this 46 year old Block was declining from drought and nematodes. Aged 'Sur Lie' with 'Batonage' for mid palate texture. The concentrated fruit is carried with bright acidity. It will develop with age for years." Best Riesling 2019 Monterey International Wine Competition, 94 points.

91-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Goldtröpfchen Kabinett is attractively reductive yet super precise and clear on the nose where ripe, concentrated white peach aromas are displayed. The palate is ripe, lush and salty-piquant, with lots of gusto and sensual character but also finesse, elegance and precision. There are coolish flinty notes on the nose and palate. This a gorgeous wine with very good length, energy and concentration. From lower, flatter and warmer plots with bigger, less concentrated grapes. Tasted as a sample some days b...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese is very clear and nicely reductive on the flinty and limey nose. Lush, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a beautifully mineral and complex Sonnenuhr with a long and intensely aromatic but always refined and refreshing mineral finish. This is a fabulous Spätlese from the Juffer. (SR)" (04/2018) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "This feels as stony and sculpted as the slope it grows on, a particularly vertiginous section of the south-facing Juffer hillside. It n...

95 points James Suckling: "This is still a bit closed, but the lemon-curd and lemon-jelly character on the nose, the finely etched flavors on the medium-bodied palate, then the very long and creamy yet super-clean finish, all announce a great dry riesling. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (09/2011) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Very aromatic, with a complex array of floral aromas, while the palate shows hints of jasmine, rambutan, persimmon and coriander. Silky in texture and expansive, with emerging acidity and minerality midpalate that bri...

Wine Spectator: "Direct but lovely to drink, with well-integrated acidity and notes of peach. The finish is inviting and moderately long. (AZ, Web Only-2019)"

96 points John Gilman: "The 2013 vintage of Clos Ste. Hune is one of the finest young vintages of this great wine that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. As the US importer was out of sample bottles of this wine, Jean Trimbach very kindly intervened and arranged for a sample magnum to be sent, which made some of my friends very happy when I shared it with them! The wine is nicely cool in profile in 2013, coming in at 12.5 percent octane and offering up beautiful precision in its youthful bouquet of pink grapefruit, tart orange, a touch of petrol, a b...

95 points John Gilman: "Oliver Haag’s 2018 Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spätlese was clearly one of the finest examples of this Prädikat that I tasted during my ten day visit to the region and I cannot recall ever tasting a better young vintage of Spätlese from this estate! The brilliant bouquet soars from the glass in a youthful blend of lime, pear, gorgeous, very salty slate minerality, violets, bee pollen and an exotic touch of fresh mint in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, laser-like and tensile, with beautiful complexity and filigree, ...

2017 Pierre Sparr Riesling Grande Reserve Alsace
Top Pick!
Wine Enthusiast: "An aromatic hint of lime on the nose of this wine promises freshness. The palate, however, focuses on mellow notes of fresh red apple. The body is slender, refreshing and has a juicy, dry finish. (AK)" (08/2019)
Price: $16.99

94 points Bob Campbell: "Concentrated, high-energy riesling with lime, citrus, apricot, feijoa and subtle floral flavours. A touch of sweetness is perfectly balanced by punchy acidity to give the wine some pleasing tension and help drive a lengthy finish. Medium-dry." (11/2019) K&L Notes: Joe Czerwinski writes in the Wine Advocate: "Since purchasing the winery in 2003, Anna and Jason Flowerday have been the owners of the oldest vines in Marlborough—the site's original Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Riesling date back to 1979. The 11-hectare certified b...

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sourced from old vines, the 2018 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese was harvested in the third week of October as the very last "regular" wine (so 3.5 weeks after the Kabinett). It is based on completely healthy fruit and was vinified entirely in traditional fuders. Offering a deep and flinty bouquet, this is a lush, elegant, highly refined and stimulating Spätlese with a salty-piquant finish. Tasted from the cask in March 2019. (SR)" (06/2019) 92 points John Gilman: "The grapes for the Elisenberger Spätlese wer...

91 points Vinous: "Bedrock's 2017 Riesling Wirz Vineyard Old Vine is a gorgeous wine full of character. Lime, white flowers, mint and bright saline notes all run through this super-expressive, nuanced Riesling. (AG)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Wirz vineyard was planted in 1963. It grows on its own roots, in decomposed granite and limestone soils in the rugged and remote Cienega Valley. Winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson has delicately coaxed this liquid sense of place into bottle, and it is very special place at that.

Stephan Reinhardt writes: "The course for the next generation has also been set. Christian Vogt (previously Karthäuserhof, Ruwer) is the new cellar master, starting with the 2017 harvest. In order to face the challenges of fungal diseases and other infections, Selbach (vineyard manager: Frank Prüm) is changing over to "gentle pruning" that is reducing the cutting surfaces and respecting the crowns of the vine. By a special pruning technique, a healthier and longer life of the vines can be ensured. Grape varieties such as Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir wer...

91 points James Suckling: "This is a blend of many parcels of younger vines and higher-elevation plantings and it has a very fresh, vibrant and vivid lemon-citrus nose with a succulent, smooth and intense palate. Elegant and very impressive. Drink now." (09/2019)

Jancis Robinson: " Less fruit on the nose than the Spring bottling, but superbly ripe citrus on the palate with honey, lemon zest and long floral notes. Steely tone too. (RH)" (01/2019) K&L Notes: Lisa Perrotti-Brown writes: "Winemaker Mac Forbes, formerly with Mount Mary, has now gone out on his own purchasing fruit from across Yarra Valley and crafting wines to his own unique style."

94 points John Gilman: "The 1976 Scharzhofberger Spätlese continues to drink beautifully well, and amazingly still has many years of beautiful life ahead of it. Both the nose and the palate have begun to dry a bit at age thirty, and now offer about Kabinett level sweetness, but with all of the haunting complexity and breed that thirty years in the bottle can bring in a wine built to age. The bouquet is a beautiful mélange of lemon curd, baked peaches, new leather, sweet corn, stony minerality and a nice topnote of lavender. On the palate the wine is medi...

92 points John Gilman: "The 2018 Rausch Kabinett was scheduled for bottling on April 1st and was showing beautifully at the time of my visit. The bouquet is already showing some of the classical filigree of this Prädikat level at its best, offering up scents of grapefruit, pear, salty slate, white flowers, a hint of Rausch mossiness and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, crisp and complex, with fine mineral drive, excellent focus and grip and the delicate stop on the long finish of a classic example of Kabinett. Fine juice in the m...

John Gilman: "The 2018 Scharzhof QbA was bottled a bit earlier than anything else in the cellars this year, as the mise for this wine was on the last day of February of 2019. The wine carries twenty-eight grams of residual sugar this year and is 10.5 percent alcohol, so it is a bit fuller-bodied in personality than the 2017. However, the wine is lovely in 2018, offering up a classic nose of green apple, petrol, pear, wild yeasts and a fine base of slate minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full and nicely mineral in personality, with good, broad s...

Connoisseurs Guide: "One of the early proponents of dry Riesling in California, Trefethen has come up again with a wonderfully fresh and well-focused rendition that, while absent evident sweetness, lacks for nothing in the way of convincing Riesling fruit. Redolent of green apples and juicy limes and showing a lightly minerally note or two, it avoids in entirety the compromising bitterness that often appears in drier versions. It will prove a most versatile partner to savory seafood preparations as well as milder chicken recipes, and it is certain to age...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Kirschheck Spätlese is a lovely example of the vintage, offering up a very pretty bouquet of white cherries, apple, wild yeasts, a touch of sea salts, bee pollen, apple blossoms and a superb base of minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and dancing, with a juicy core, great cut and grip and a long, vibrant and perfectly balanced finish. This is going to be delicious to drink in its youth, but will have no trouble keeping several decades." (08/2018) 93 points James Suckling: "A juicy and elegant wine th...
