92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A touch of flint mixes in with the russet pear notes on the nose. The juicy palate shows of slenderness but also a texture that combines citrus pith, yeast and salt which complements the overriding juiciness well. This is light, dry and full of flavor. *Editor's Choice* (AK)" (07/2019) 90 points James Suckling: "A fresh array of pear and apple aromas with background notes of pepper and spice. The palate has a glossy and juicy feel with a ton of ripe stone-fruit flavor on offer." (09/2019)

This is fresh, minerally and crisp, with that classic Grüner white pepper lift to the nose and tangy green apple and snap pea flavors on the palate. In an easy to open, liter-sized bottle, it's a refreshing go-to for a variety of green salads or veggie dishes, and is particularly complementary to dishes featuring asparagus, Brussels sprouts, or artichoke. The Etz family has been in the wine business since 1898, and the estate is now in the fourth generation. With nearly 40 hectares of vineyard in production, the Etz estate prides itself on synthesizing t...

Decanter: "Quite firm at first, but the white stone fruit and orange blossom notes open with time in the glass. The palate is creamy but wth crisp balancing acidity and a taught grassy, mineral line. Not the most complex, but very well priced from a top producer focused on sustainable farming and low-intervention winemaking. (TG)" (03/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Floral and fresh. A little tight and taut at the moment. Needs a bit of time to open out. 16+/20 points. (JR)" (03/2018)

2018 Nigl "Freiheit" Grüner Veltliner Kremstal Niederösterreich

Wine Enthusiast: "The nose combines subtle yeast with notes of ripe pear peel. The palate adds lemony highlights that dominate the slender and ever so slightly savory palate. This is dry and refreshing." (07/2019)

David Schildknecht writes: "Erwin Poller is as meticulous and tenaciously hard-working, pensive and visionary, as any grower in Austria, and despite farming in the unglamorous Weinviertel renders some of his country’s most delicious and fascinating--not to mention best-value--wines. Poller makes a strong case from historical research as well as in the glass for the long-standing viticultural potential of Röschitz and its environs, near the Weinviertel’s western edge. But in truth, there are clearly numerous localities and corners of this vast region simp...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine's ripe pear fruit and leesy yeastiness make it seem like a raw tank sample. On the palate, the yeastiness expresses itself as savory texture, framing fresh lemon notes and peppery highlights. The finish is dry and long. (AK)" (04/2019) 90 points James Suckling: "A very lively Grüner Veltliner with nice spritz, plus enough pear and green-pepper character to satisfy. Refreshing and very clean at the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. " (09/2018) Wine Spectator: "Very racy, displaying cinnamon, apple, mineral, and tr...

93 points James Suckling: "Really attractive complexity here with grilled-lemon and pastry notes, as well as yellow peaches and mirabelles. The palate has good textural appeal with a very sleek, fresh and impressively dry, detailed impression. Gruner veltliner with roughly 10% of inter-planted varieties, including Welschriesling, Muskat Ottonel, Weissburgunder, Neuburger, Furmint. Clever wine. Delicious too!" (09/2019) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This shows a slight reduction at first, but those flavors add to the complexity of this silky, focused and w...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe pear, hay and yeast on the nose promise both fruit and savoriness. The palate adds lively apple freshness and combines pear and yeast in a fruity embrace. This is easy and dry but full of interest. (AK)" (07/2019)

Grüner Veltliner (50% of the vineyard area) and Riesling (25%) are their most important varieties. Others are Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Zweigelt. Every wine is different, but the typical Mayr wine is elegant, gives drinking pleasure, and carries as much of what makes this particular variety and location so special.

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From one of the oldest vineyard designations in Europe (first mentioned in 511 AD) and grown on clay, loess and paragneiss soils, the 2017 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel displays a clear and subtle bouquet of white fruits, almonds, cinnamon, stewed apples and a dash of fresh lemon juice. Very elegant and beautifully balanced on the palate, this is a dense, well-structured and persistent Veltliner with a fine, crystalline acidity and a long and intense finish. It was bottled at the end of April and tas...

Winemaker's Notes: "Brilliant, bright straw color, with a savory nose on entry, showing herbs fresh from the garden, warm, spicy white pepper, and ginger tea. The fresh fruit that layers itself in between the initial aroma and your first, actual taste is full of yellow plum and honeydew melon, and red apple. Accents of rich vanilla and nutmeg abound. The palate is equally warm and emollient - full, rich and fleshy, with a spine of great acid to back it up. This Grüner will age stupendously, and continue to evolve in its complexity and balanced weight."
Price: $21.95

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Based on 80% Grüner Veltliner and 20% Chardonnay (including a tiny bit of Riesling), the 2017 Hausmarke is clear, intense and fresh in its ripe and concentrated lemon fruit and crushed stone aromas. Sourced in the calcareous Leithaberg region, this blend is dense, spicy and quite powerful but fresh and lemony/fruity, stony and floral flavored. It has a clear, fresh and persistent finish that reveals fine tannins and mineral structure with lasting salinity and freshness. Excellent again! Picked in the middle of Se...

The Nigl estate is located in the Krems Valley of Austria and the buildings date back to the 12th century and was once held by Prince Starhemberg. During most of the 20th century the property was vacant until 1994 when it was purchased by the Nigl family who opened a winery. Most of the vineyards are planted to Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller completing the wine selection. Winery notes: "Tropical nose, dense complex fragrance, rich, powerful, fleshy structure, wonderfully extract sweetness, multi-layered, a successful ...

93 points Vinous: "Tatomer's 2018 Grüner Veltliner Meeresboden is loaded with a whole range of citrus, orchard fruit and floral notes. Beautifully textured and generous the Meeresboden has a bit more richness and volume, which really brings out the flavors nicely. This is a fabulous showing. (AG)" (09/2019)

97 points James Suckling: "Still slightly funky from long lees contact, this is very deep and complex with an entire universe of herbal and vegetal aromas. Then, an almost endless, cool finish of radical minerality. Made from organically grown grapes. Long aging potential." (10/2018) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Here is a distinct version, with hints of toasted hazelnut and cinnamon, followed by peach, white plum and chamomile notes. Well-crafted, with harmony, character and precision. Finishes with cream detail and hints of white chocolate. Better to wa...

Winery notes: Loam and clay loam soils. Planted in 1972 as Cabernet Sauvignon. Grafted over to Gruner in 2008, Own Rooted. This wine is driven by minerality with wonderful acidity. A beautiful greenish hue. Jasmine, juniper, white pepper and lime. Medium body and very well focused. Amazing with grilled sausages, charcuterie, pickled vegetables, asparagus and sautéed pea shoots. Grüner Veltliner is known as the most food-friendly wine varietal in the world. 100% stainless steel. Aged on the lees. Fresh, vibrant, lots of acidity. Lower in alcohol. Super Fo...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark yellow-golden colored 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Spiegel 1ÖTW Vincent is clear, fresh and precise on the slightly flinty nose. On the palate, this is a very elegant, fresh and crunchy Spiegel with just 12.5% alcohol. Its is less complex and long than the fabulous 2017 Ried Lamm but stimulating, fresh and grippy. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg, Kamptal, September 2018. Drink through 2030. (SR)" (12/2018) K&L Notes: Proprietor Willi Bründlmayer places great importance on the ecological balance of his viney...
