97 points John Gilman: "The 1974 Heitz “Martha’s Vineyard” is rightfully one of the most famous wines ever produced in the history of California, and the wine continues to cruise along beautifully at age forty-three. The bouquet is very deep and impressively complex, soaring from the glass in a blaze of cherries, blood orange, plenty of eucalyptus, spice elements, grilled venison, lovely soil tones, cigar wrapper and hints of petroleum jelly in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and plush at the core, with great focus and gri...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1974 was an 'outstanding' vintage, according to André Tchelistcheff. This comment is backed up by a number of great, long-lived Napa wines I have tasted from this year, including Heitz Martha’s Vineyard and Chappellet. It was a vintage that clearly produced a notably fuller/riper style at Beaulieu. Medium brick-tawny colored, the 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour gives up intense scents of cherry cola, leather, tilled soil, dried cranberries and preserved plums with subtle nuances of eucal...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1974 Sterling "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Patience has never been one of my virtues, but after twenty years this wine still seems formidable, and oh so backward and tough. I am beginning to think the tannin will ultimately win the battle between the wine's fruit and structure. The color remains an impressive saturated plum/garnet, with only a hint of amber at the edge. The tight nose reluctantly offers up earthy, truffle-like scents intertwined with aromas of jammy black-cherries, herbs, and wood. Full body and impressive extract remain hallmarks of this twenty-year old wine. However, the ferocious tannin with its astringent bite is more noticeable than ever. I am not giving up on it as there are still too many impressive components...(RP)" (08/1994)
Starting Bid: $280.00

Bid on this bottle of 1974 Mount Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (94JG). John Gilman: "The 1974 Cabernet from Merry Edwards’ first vintage at the helm at Mount Eden is drinking beautifully out of magnum today, and though it is a bit more powerful in personality than the 1973, it is still a superb example of the vintage. The bouquet is deep, complex and now wide open, offering up scents of cassis, pomegranate, a touch of mint, cigar ash, chipotle peppers, dark soil tones, a touch of spice (vaguely reminiscent of nutmeg) and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a rock solid core of fruit, fine focus and grip, tangy acids and a long, complex, still gently tannic finish. This is a beautiful wine with decades and decades of life still ahead of it (particularly in magnum)." (09/2017)
