98 points Vinous: "Mount Eden’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon represents the essence of what Cabernet Sauvignon is all about in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Deep, powerful and explosive, the 2016 simply has it all. A wine of tremendous depth and intensity. Readers, take note. This is world class Cabernet Sauvignon that in any other region would cost 2-3 times as much. Savory and expansive, with tons of mountain character and remarkable richness from low yields in 2016, the Cabernet Sauvignon is simply off the charts. It’s another utterly breathtaking wine from Mo...

2017 Ridge Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Top Pick!
94 points Vinous: "Ridge’s 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a fabulous choice for readers who want a Monte Bello fix now, without having to wait. Supple, radiant and silky, with tremendous balance, the 2017 is just flat-out delicious and utterly irresistible. Dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, sweet tobacco and a kick of American oak build as this sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon shows its allure. The 2017 is an outrageously beautiful wine. Don’t miss it. (AG)" (09/2020) 93 points Wine & Spirits: "The limestone seabed on which this cabernet grow...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "There’s a fascinating mix of freshness and funk on the nose of this bottling, from crisp red currants and pluots to dried, pepper crusted meat and dusty herbs. It’s lightly bodied on the palate, where earthy flavors of dried sausage and dried clay meet with lightly tart cranberry and tangy pomegranate.(MK)" (01/2021)

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "My favorite in the lineup, the 2017 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is stunning in every way. Gorgeous black raspberry fruits, lots of floral, scorched earth, and sappy herb aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and a great finish all make for one of the most captivating Pinot Noirs in the vintage. It's brilliant today yet should easily evolve for 15 years or more." (09/2020) 95 points Vinous: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is powerful and tightly wound today. That won't be an issue in a few years of cour...

95 points James Suckling: "Loads of forest floor, mushrooms, leaves and dark fruit on the nose. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and chewy tannins. Hints of toasted oak and cedar, too. This is a structured red that needs two or three years to soften, then you can give it a go. Best Santa Cruz Mountains Cab for a long time from here. " (10/2020) K&L Notes: Martin Ray is made in the old Martini & Prati winery by Courtney Benham, founder of Blackstone Winery. 2016 Calera "Muns" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (Previously $50) (Previously $50)
Top Pick!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the second vintage of the Muns Vineyard bottling. The 2016 Pinot Noir Muns Vineyard aged 17 months in 30% new French oak. Pale to medium ruby, it gives up bright aromas of orange peel, fresh cranberries, macerated strawberries, raspberries and blackberries with accents of woodsmoke, underbrush, cured meats and dried tree bark. The palate is light to medium-bodied and delicate with earth-laced fruits, a sturdy frame and great freshness, finishing long and lifted. (EB) " (02/2020) 92 points Vinous: "A new...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pinot Noir has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and notions of eucalyptus, forest floor, cool blueberries, raspberry and sweet strawberry preserves with prosciutto, faint hints of dried herbs, wild blackberries and an orange peel note. The palate is light to medium-bodied with an intense core of perfumed fruit, a soft, grainy frame and juicy acidity, finishing with pretty berry notes. 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "A transparent red in the glass, this bottling is loaded with aromas of incense, juniper and pine needle—much like a walk through the coastal forests—yet offers tart and crisp cranberry and raspberry fruit tones as well. The forest floor and freshly snapped pine flavors are delicious on the palate, where that crisp red fruit keeps begging for recurrent attention. (MK)" (03/2021) Jancis Robinson: "Scents of forest floor and chopped herbs. In the mouth, raspberry and cherry flavours are heavily scented with chopped herbs and gr...

94 points Vinous: "Deep violet. Expansive aromas of black raspberry and blueberry, joined by exotic spice, floral oil and incense notes that build in the glass. Energetic and focused on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur flavors and a spicy jolt of cracked pepper. Closes bright and long, with resonating red fruit and floral notes and smooth, well-judged tannins. 75% whole clusters and no new oak. 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard comes from a mostly southwest-facing vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains (planted to a heritage selection of clones) and was brought up in a mix of new and used French oak. It offers a complex, nuanced style that carries lots of spiced red fruits, forest floor, smoked earth, potpourri, and a touch of sassafras and sagebrush. Complex, medium-bodied, silky, and beautifully balanced on the palate, it checks in behind the 2015 and 2016 but is nevertheless a beautiful, elegant, seamless Pinot Noir t...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Mt Pajaro Vineyard is more upfront and expressive, with lots of bright cherry and raspberry fruit interwoven with notions of scorched earth, chocolate, earth, and dried herbs. It's another medium-bodied, nicely textured, balanced, savory Pinot Noir from this team that's going to benefit from short-term bottle age." (10/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the first vintage of a Mt. Pajaro vineyard designate Pinot Noir—previously this fruit was blended into the Alesia bottling. 91 points Vinous: "Vivid ruby-red. Lively cherry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of cola and candied flowers. Allspice and licorice notes emerge with air and carry onto the palate, which features gently sweet red/blue fruit flavors that show fine definition and spicy lift. Displays strong, fruity thrust on the gently tannic finish, which echoes the spicy note. 91 points Vinous: "The 2018 Pinot Noir (Santa Cruz Mountains) is bright, ethereal and beautifully lifted in the glass. Rosewater, mint, pine, sweet red cherry and orange peel give the 2018 striking aromatic presence. On the palate, the 2018 is nervy and taut, with striking energy and wonderful delineation, but the sweet Pinot fruit gradually emerges over several hours. Hints of cinnamon, star anise and touch of new oak linger. The style reminds me of the wines of northern Piedmont. The 2018 is such a pretty and inviting wine. (AG)" (09/2020) K&L Notes:...

95 points Decanter: "The rocky minerality of the region shows from first sniff through to the lengthy finish. The earthiness is beautifully offset by fleshy red and black fruit, with spice-infused cherry, bittersweet chocolate, espresso and vanilla notes. For all its youthful intensity, the palate is remarkably fresh and bright. (LM)" (07/2018) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ""In all my years, I've never seen a Cabernet vintage like 2015, in terms of yield," Jeffrey Patterson tells me. "We had very low yields. The vines didn't have clusters. ...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A step up over the Anderson Valley release, the 2016 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains Alesia gets fruit from five of the six single vineyards (no Skyline fruit) and it offers a sensational bouquet of ripe cherries, currants, rose petals, conifer trees, and sappy flowers. Complex, medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless, it’s a beautiful, beautiful wine that unquestionably plays in the same league as the single vineyards." It's light to medium-bodied with a silky texture and intense, spicy, earth-accented fruits, framed by grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. 'We are releasing it sooner than usual because it's a great value for wine lists, sort of our mid-appellation wine.' This vintage, the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec. Firm and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated dark berry, bitter cherry, floral pastille, chewing tobacco and succulent herb flavors that deepen, spread out and pick up a hint of cola with aeration. Seamless, focused, lithe and distinctly old school in character, in the best way, finishing impressively long and spicy, with building florality and dusty tannins lending closing grip. 1...

A beautiful Pinot Noir from multi-generational vigneron, Ryan Beauregard. 94 points Wine & Spirits: "In a southeast-facing set of limestone hills, Mills Vineyard often yields warm and spicy fruit. In 2016 it grew a savory, generous pinot, the fruit cradled in scents of creosote and bay laurel, oak and spice, and draped in fine tannins; for pheasant. " (04/2020) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Wild cherry, thyme, sagebrush and light bay leaf aromas converge on the nose of this bottling, which is relatively mellow to start but opens considerable with patience. Roasted cherry, cherry-pit and juniper flavors align on the palate, whi...

95 points Vinous: "The 2014 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard bristles with energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and blood orange give the Alpine its super-appealing aromatic upper register, but there is plenty of depth lurking beneath. Here the flavors are bright and nicely focused, while the richness of the vintage is mostly felt in the dense, potent finish. About as seamless as they come, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a layered texture, and a great finish. As with most of these 2016s, it has some accessibility today, yet it’s going to age gracefully on its balance and overall harmony." 96 points John Gilman: "The 2014 Alpine Hillside bottling of pinot noir from Rhys Vineyards is once again my favorite of this absolutely stellar roster of 2014 pinots from this great Santa Cruz Mountain property. The wine offers up a marvelous nose of black plums, black cherries, espresso, woodsmoke, black minerality, fresh thyme and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and tightly-knit, with a marvelous core, great mineral drive, bright acids and outstanding length and grip on the ripely tannic and laser-like finish. 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Syrah Horseshoe Vineyard is incredibly elegant and finessed. Aging in 25HL cask give the Syrah striking translucence and energy, with less bombastic fruit than in the past, and far greater nuance. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint and sage are all lifted by the 100% whole clusters, while firm yet well-integrated tannins give energy and cut. I can't wait to see how the 2016 ages. The 2016 spent 28 months in oak. (AG)" (10/2019) 94 points John Gilman: "The 2016 Horseshoe Vineyard Syrah from Rhys Vineyards is outstandin...

This is a rich, powerful version of this cuvée and boasts a black/blue color as well as a huge nose of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed rocks, and lead pencil shavings. With some serious structure, full-bodied richness, and a fleshy, opulent texture, this massive Monte Bello is going to be one for the ages." This site has slightly more clay in the soils and the wine is always one of the more rounded and charming in the lineup. Nevertheless, I’ve no doubt it’s going to drink nicely for a decade." 2010 Rhys "Home Vineyard" San Mateo County Pinot Noir
Back In Stock!
95 points Vinous: "Proprietor Kevin Harvey opened a bottle of the 2010 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard to show how the tannins integrate over time. Today, what comes through is a decidedly extroverted voice, with plenty of dark-fleshed stone fruit, game, violet and licorice all pushed forward. The tannins have softened, releasing the perfumed aromatics and layers of racy fruit. Drink through 2022. Of the 2008 Rhys "Horseshoe Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir,Allen Meadows - Burghound writes: "An exceptionally densely fruited nose that is intensely floral and nuanced with stone, spice and soft earth hints complements to perfection the impressively concentrated medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract such that the very firm tannins are rendered almost invisible at present though I suspect that they will become more visible as the baby fat recedes. This broad-scaled effort should age for up to a decade and last several more. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2001 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (97RP, 97VN, 97WE, 95W&S, 95WS). Vinous: "The 2001 Monte Bello is a total turn-on. Racy and hedonistic, especially by Ridge standards, the 2001 makes a strong opening statement with its super-ripe fruit and explosive aromatics. Beams of supporting tannin lie in the background and serve to give the wine its overall shape. Hints of leather, mint and sweet tobacco add perfume throughout. Over the last few years, the 2001 has begun to develop quite a bit of more tertiary notes. It remains one of the most flamboyant (and ripest) Monte Bello ever made. (AG)" (06/2017)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2016 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (98VN, 97JD, 96RP, 96W&S, 96WS, 95JS). Vinous: "One of the highlights in this tasting, the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics, bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly, the 2016 is very primary today, with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that, though, the 2016 pulses with energy and simply exceptional balance. Don't miss it! (AG)" (10/2019)

Of the 2008 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon,Decanter writes: "Ridge has long created a Californian classic; that broke all the rules – a Cabernet based wine grown not in Napa but on greenstone- and limestone-rich soils in the remote corners of the Santa Cruz Mountains, aged not in French oak but American. (Though Paul Draper asserts Bordeaux’s use of French oak is a post-World War I turn.) The Merlot comes from plots on heavier soils. It accounts for 28% of the 2008 which, coming after two drought years, shows great meatiness. Amid the youthful oak toast is bla

Bid on this 3-half-bottle lot of 2004 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (375ml) (94W&S, 93ST, 93VN, 92RP). Wine & Spirits: "Ridge grows one of the most distinctive Cabernets in California at its Monte Bello estate. This vintage represents a selection of 38 percent of the crop, which itself had been naturally restricted by lower than average rainfall, particularly in winter. Ridge doesn't irrigate these vines-nor do they inoculate the juice to start fermentation, which yielded a modest 13.2 percent alcohol in 2004. The fractured limestone in the soil provided just enough moisture to grow this elegant Cabernet, with flavors of wild black cherries and black currants. It feels balanced and firm, dense while weightless, a beauty that will mature for two decades from the vintage, perhaps longer." (12/2007)
Starting Bid: $227.00

Bid on this bottle of 2000 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (95VN, 93DC, 93RP, 92ST). Vinous: "Do you want the good news or the bad news? Well, Ridge's 2000 Monte Bello is still not ready to drink. Huge, rich and voluptuous, but backed up by serious structure, the 2000 is still a very, very young wine. Readers who own the 2000 should be thrilled. With time in the glass, the 2000 starts to open up a little bit aromatically, but the tannins remain imposing. Hints of tobacco, iron, smoke, savory herbs, leather and licorice all add nuance on the close. This dramatic, brooding Monte Bello will likely drink well for another three decades. In 2000, Montebello is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. (AG)" (07/2013)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (97JS, 95JG, 95RP, 94ST, 94VN, 94W&S). James Suckling: "Blueberries, currants and flowers. The nose just pops out. Intense. Full body, with a round and velvety tannin structure and lots of currants, ripe strawberries. Very intense every. Black pepper at the finish. Muscular yet toned. Very structured yet balanced. This needs a minimum of four to five years of aging. Paul Draper says that perhaps this is as great as the legendary 1991. Made for aging." (05/2012)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2015 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (100JS, 98JD, 98VN, 95DC, 95RP, 94CG, 94W&S). James Suckling: "Stunning depth, power, purity and elegance. The blackcurrants and plums are fresh and intense on the nose with blueberries and gently herbal notes, too. The palate has a keenly articulated array of vibrant tannins that hold long, fresh and pure. It invokes a sense of wonderment at the finish. So long and so pure. This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, is just at the start of a wonderful journey." (11/2018)

Of the 2013 Ridge Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon,Wine & Spirits writes: "Ridge’s Estate cabernet is usually a bit chunkier and broader than the Monte Bello blend, rarely as pure and elegant. If that’s the case in 2013, the Monte Bello is going to be a wine for the ages, because the Estate cabernet is stellar. It catches the savory nuances of fruit grown at cool altitude in aromas of cassis and cedar bark, holding that fruit in a matrix of fine limestone-grown tannins and vibrant acidity. That acidity drives a compressed, unstoppable arrow of flavor that’s tense and a bit backward, as a great young cabernet should
