95 points Wine Enthusiast: "There’s a pure focus to this bottling that will benefit cellaring. Aromas of roasted black plum, black pepper and lavender lead into a palate loaded with iron shavings, graphite, charred beef and taut elderberry fruit. It’s tight, and ready for years of enjoyment. Drink now through 2035. *Cellar Selection* (MK) " (11/2020)

This 14-hectare estate has belonged to the Gaussen family for six generations. Located in one of the warmer and drier parts of Bandol, its soils are heavy in clay and limestone, meaning that most of the vineyard labor is done by hand out of necessity. Produced from old vines (and therefore from smaller grapes) the resulting wines are full and flavorful. When drunk young, the flavors of this wine are licorice, morello cherry and blackcurrant; and after 10 years of good keeping they have the aromas of leather, undergrowth, licorice, truffles, venison.

2018 Bodegas Olivares "Altos de la Hoya" Jumilla
New!
90 points Decanter: "Made from ungrafted old vines planted at 825m, this characterful red offers plenty of bang for your buck. Intense, fruity nose with fresh blackberries, plums and baked fruit plus earthy, herbal tones. The concentrated palate is packed with dark plum and mulberry fruit, underpinned by fresh acidity and gently framed by spicy notes from six months in French oak. (JS)" (09/2020) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2018 Altos de la Hoya was produced with Monastrell grapes from old ungrafted vines. It has a creamy and bals...

Guillaume and Soledad Tari run this beautiful estate in the elevated seaside appellation of Bandol. Bandol is an incredible micro-climate with its concave shaped vineyards that gain the exposure of the sun and the cooling effects of the seaside breezes, all while making powerfully rich Mourvedre based wines that evolve beautifully over the years. The Bandol is a blend of 65% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache and 10% Cinsault with an average vine age of 25 years. Just starting to develop, the Begude offers up deep black fruited flavors accompanied by notes of anis...

2018 Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell (Silver Label) Jumilla
New!
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Monastrell from their own old, non-irrigated vines fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months. This is the first vintage that is certified organic. There were some challenges, but they resulted in a fresh and balanced wine with integrated oak and a juicy and round palate. They have introduced optical sorting of the grapes, and perhaps that's why there is more precision and purity. They cannot do manual sorting at this price point, but optical sorting seems like a good alte...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Mourvèdre Harrison Clarke Vineyard is medium to deep ruby-purple with jammy blueberry, black cherry, cassis, olive and fried bacon notes plus lilac, black raisin, fried herbs and granite tinges. Medium to full-bodied, it fleshes out in the mouth with oodles of ripe fruits and meaty layers, firm, pleasantly chewy tannins and great juicy acidity, finishing long. This has a nice interplay of savory nuances with dense, lush fruits. (EB)" (09/2019) 93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Mourvèdre Harrison Clarke Viney...

97 points Decanter: "Complex nose with deep black berry fruits, spice and hints of polish. Really lovely texture with layers of creamy red and black fruits, spices and powerful but super fine tannins. Great expression of the appellation; powerfully long. (DWWA 2020)" (10/2020) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine comes from the highest point of the Bégude estate, a 1,200-foot elevation overlooking the Mediterranean. Wood aged and offering spiciness as well as acidity and red fruits, the wine is almost entirely produced from structured Mourvèdre. Tanni...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Mourvèdre-dominated 2017 l’Ancely is a rockingly good wine, and there aren’t many better Mourvèdre out there. Lots of blueberry and wild strawberry fruits as well as notes of spiced meats, herbes de Provence, and peppery garrigue notes all soar from the glass of this full-bodied red. Offering a layered, seamless texture, good acidity, and enough structure to warrant 2-4 years of bottle age, it’s going to have 15+ years of prime drinking from cold cellars. 96+" (06/2020) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 La C...

Winemaker's Notes: "Mr. Natural is the umbrella we are using for our new series of zero/zero wines. Our first bottlings under this label hail from a century-old planting of Mourvedre, and some 80's Pinot from the remote Lime Kiln Valley in the midst of a 19th Century limestone and active granite quarry blessed with amazing limestone, granite, and dolomite soils. While our approach has always favored minimal intervention in winemaking to allow the quality of the site to shine through, it's a rare vineyard that boasts the perfect confluence of factors that...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Also 100% Monastrell but a selection of old, head-trained vines, the 2016 Mira Salinas was brought up in a mix of new, once-, and twice-used barrels. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by a Bandol-like bouquet of smoked black fruits, earth, meat, and spice. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, has beautiful fruit, good acidity, and plenty of tannins, and it's a classic, balanced Monastrell that more than over-delivers at the price. These are custom cuvées for Jorge Ordonez that are only brought into the US." (09/2019) 90 points R...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "From one of the Sierra Foothills’ most respected vineyards, this starts out leathery, then turns electric, lifted and bright. The red cherry flavors flash sweet and sour, almost citrusy, with a peppery crunch and mildly floral, nimble tannins. For smoked chicken." From Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant: "When Lucie "Lulu" Tempier married Lucien Peyraud in 1936, her father gave them Domaine Tempier, an active farm that had been in the family since 1834, near Le Plan du Castellet, just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol. Tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol (a wedding gift from his father-in-law) inspired Lucien to research the terroir of Bandol extensively. Up until that point, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been systematically replanted to higher-yielding varietals. Howeve...

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2012 L'Aventure "Les Demoiselles" Paso Robles Rhône Blend (95JD, 95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another smoking effort is the 2012 Cuvee Les Demoiselles, which is 80% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah that was aged in 40% new French oak. It sports an inky purple color to go with brilliant notes of black cherry, earth, licorice and big minerality on the nose. One of the more tight, backward and reserved 2012s from the estate, it has full-bodied richness and superb concentration, but needs another year or three to open up and flesh out. It should have an easy 12-15 years of overall longevity. Unfortunately, there are only five barrels of this to go around. (JD) 95+" (08/2014)
