92 points James Suckling: "Lots of ripe-fruit and smoked-meat character with hints of cried cheese and spice. Some stems. Medium to full body. Rounded, juicy tannins and a fruity finish. Delicious now." (06/2019) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is the most recent Spanish addition to our Direct Import portfolio. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. All of the DOs of Aragon are represented in their lineup—Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano. ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The young and fruit-driven 2018 Garnacha Old Vines was produced with grapes from Calatayud, and it fermented with semi-carbonic maceration and matured in concrete with lees for four months. It's juicy and ripe, with a round palate, fine tannins and a warm finish. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2019. 94 points James Halliday: "Although the alcohol is the same, this has more power, depth and drive than its Barossa Valley counterpart, which momentarily suggests higher alcohol. It's not, but it certainly needs more time, and will repay the patient in spades." (05/2017) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "Peter Leske is the winemaker on the ground for Thistledown, working with UK-based MWs Giles Cook and Fergal Tynan, who founded the firm to explore old-vine grenache in South Australia. The Vagabond comes from a vineyard in Blewitt Springs where 70-year-old bus...

92 points James Halliday: "Red berried fruits, bright and lively, swoosh through the palate, engaging as they go. It's not complex but it's effective. Dry spice, florals and swirls of anise take the idea and run with it. It's not heavy but it's insistent." (09/2016)

94 points James Suckling: "Gorgeous, bright fruit with raspberries, black cherries and lavender with some schist. It’s medium-bodied with very polished and integrated tannins that go on and on. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The regional blend 2019 Camins del Priorat is a blend of 35% Garnacha, 24% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cariñena, 10% Merlot and 3% other varieties. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then put to ferment with the natural yeasts in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concr...

94 points James Halliday: "Light, bright crimson; the inclusion of 9% grenache from McLaren Vale has worked very well, for there's a touch more structure and spine than many Barossa Valley grenaches at this price. The red fruits that are the heart and soul of this wine are delicious." (05/2017) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine offers a perfumed nose of ripe strawberry, cherry and blueberry fruit, with additional notes of herbs and black peppery. The palate brings bright fruit backed by soft, sandy tannins." (04/2019)

92 points James Suckling: "A super brambly red that has abundant rich and ripe, dark berry and cherry aromas. The palate is a riot of fresh dark berries and delivers a very plush, sweetly spiced, powder-dry finish. Drink or hold." (07/2019) Jancis Robinson: "The cooperative of Borja and also the Borsao brand was founded in 1958. Some years later, the cooperatives of Pozuelo and Tabuenca joined to establish a new company called Bodegas Borsao S A. They are one of the main producers of Garnacha in the world. Single varietal of Garnacha. Vineyards of up t...

95 points James Suckling: "A round, fruity red with plum, berry and cherry character. Some orange-peel and floral undertones. Full-bodied. Delicious. Drink or hold." (11/2020) K&L Notes: Artazu is the Navarra project from Artadi. It was inspired by the owners realtionship with California winemaking maverick Randall Graham. Navarra is located along the Camino Santiago as you travel north east from Rioja towards Pamplona. The vineyards for this wine are located at 600m and the soils are clay limestone. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Laurel is a blend of the younger vines, some barrels that were declassified from Clos Erasmus and the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon, and in the low-yielding and dry 2017 vintage, it's 70% Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% alcohol. The wine fermented mostly in concrete and oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of oak vats, concrete, used barriques and amphorae for 16 months. They produce this to be approachable from the moment it's released. The 2017s feel very...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From vines planted in 1910, this wine impresses on multiple levels. Aromas of dark berry, strawberry, dried thyme and turned soil are both rustic and refined. The palate is framed by fresh acidity and a delightful rocky minerality, which give depth to the cranberry, raspberry and herbal flavors. *Editors' Choice* (MK)" (11/2020) 92 points Vinous: "Deep, brilliant red. 2017 David & Nadia Grenache Paardeberg Swartland
Back In Stock!
93 points Vinous: "The 2017 Grenache comes from two dry-farmed vineyards and saw three-and-a-half weeks’ skin contact, including 30% to 50% whole bunches, the remainder destemmed but not crushed, then matured in used oak for 12 months. It has a perfumed bouquet of mineral-rich cranberry and crushed strawberry aromas, very detailed and focused. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied, with sappy red berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove, leading into a natural, white-pepper-infused finish that lingers in the mouth. Classic Swartland Grenache." (09/...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous red 2015 Sedella was cropped from a warm and dry year; despite this, the wine is only 13.5% alcohol and has good freshness. It matured in used French oak barrels for 14 months. For the first time, the wine reminded me of an old Colares, with some earthy and rusty aromas, character and rusticity. It really had the aromatic profile of an old red from Portugal (that I love!). There are notes of iron and licorice, and the palate had pungent flavors and fine-grained but slightly pointy tannins. I guess t...

The viticulture is organic, grape harvest is manual and carefully selected. Vineyards: rocky limestone clay soil of very low fertility. Altitude of the vineyards: 800m above sea level. Spontaneous fermentation, aged 6 months, 1/3 of the grapes fermented and aged respectively in clay amphorae, French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Limited production of 1700 bottles. Jancis Robinson: "82% Grenache, 18% Syrah. 60% from Alban, 32% Stolpman, 8% Shadow Canyon. 400 cases. Mid ruby, still so much red in the colour for an 11-year-old wine. Complex fruit and liquorice but it is still so surprisingly primary on the nose even though there is the beginning of leather. An hour later, much more undergrowth and not at all primary. Aged quite well but rather fragile once opened, ending up with some orange and spice, but the alcohol sticks out more as the texture has got thinner. 96 points James Suckling: "This has such attractive and pure, fresh-raspberry, red-cherry and red-plum aromas with some subtle spice and dried-wood notes. The palate has a succulent, juicy and energetic feel with mouthwateringly fresh red-berry flavors. So tautly focused and approachable yet resilient tannins." (06/2020)

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are a whopping two demi-muids of the stellar 2017 Gigondas L'Argnee Vieilles Vignes in the pipeline, so readers will have to be on their toes to grab a bottle or two. Made from the same pre-Phylloxera parcel of Grenache, it's incredibly intense this vintage, boasting enough purple raspberries, black cherries and Asian spices to send me almost into sensory overload. Yet for all the flavor, this full-bodied wine is velvety-silky in feel, with a long, elegant finish. (JC)" (08/2019) 94-96 points Jeb Dunnu...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "90+ "The 2017 Pegaso Zeta is a juicy, straightforward, open and expressive pure Garnacha, and it's a little riper than the 2016, which was the vintage of the change. But it faithfully represents a warmer year of faster ripening and perhaps a little less complexity. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018." (LG)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: Zeta is from 890-920m at the entry into Cebreros. Produced with 100% traditional, EU organic, bush-trained garnacha vines. The slate and granite soils are blended, givi...

2016 Bodegas Breca Garnacha Calatayud
New!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A step up in price, the 2016 Breca is all Garnacha that was fermented and aged 15 months in older puncheons and demi-muids. It has brilliant notes of kirsch, ripe black raspberries, crushed violets, orange rind, licorice, and spice box. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, and balanced, it's another beautiful wine that has balance, integrated acidity, ripe tannins, and tons of character. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years." (09/2019) 90 points James Suckling: "There’s a wealth of ripe dark-berry and spicy-fruit aro...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Arroyo del Tórtolas achieved full ripeness and 15.5% alcohol despite which the wine doesn't feel warm or too ripe. It's balsamic and aromatic, and although it feels a little shaken by the recent bottling, it feels very complete, with a little more of everything but still in balance. I believe this will make a beautiful bottle of Arroyo del Tórtolas with a few years in bottle. 3,300 bottles were filled in February 2020. (LG)" (04/2020)

Winery Notes: " "Gambrels of the Sky" comes from an Emily Dickinson poem entitled "I dwell in Possibility," and though this feels a little lofty, it seemed appropriate for a wine that is a dedication to my remarkable grandmother, Frances Howard Peterson. Not only did she love poetry, she also loved cooking, science, and wine. A single Grenache-based wine was one of the first my grandmother tried and launched her into the world of vinous possibilities. The 2016 Gambrels is built around the 1880s planting of Grenache at the venerable Gibson Ranch in M...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Tasted with same score in 2002, the following review reflects a tasting in 02/1998) Two of the most decadent wines made on planet Earth are the limited production (about 900 cases of each) of Old Vine Grenache. In 1996, there are three offerings, but I only tasted two, the Blewitt Springs and Kangarilla Vineyard. The opaque blue/black-colored 1996 Old Vine Grenache Blewitt Springs offers a blackberry, cassis, and peppery-scented nose. Explosively sweet black fruit hits the palate with considerable weight and un...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made from 100% Powerline Vineyard (since 2015), the 2017 Grenache The Boy Powerline Vineyard sports a lighter ruby hue as well as Rayas-like notes of decayed flowers, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and cured meats. Seamless, medium-bodied, and beautifully polished, with fine tannins, it's a stunning, Burgundian example of this variety to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years. There are a little over 1,000 cases produced. This is what I call a stacked lineup from K Vintners, and the team of Charles Smith and Brennon Leighton continue to ...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra combines the power and ripeness of the slate soils with the freshness of the year and comes through as balanced and very complete. The oak is perfectly integrated, and the year seems like a breakthrough in the region, more elegant and floral as well as tasty, with very fine tannins and supple flavors. This is superb. 3,120 bottles produced. (LG)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: This is Telmo Rodriguez’s Sierra de Gredos project, named after the Spanish car manufacturer. Take a quick m...

Winemaker's Notes: "This Grenache was sourced from Joe Hattrup’s Elephant Mountain Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills Appellation of Yakima Valley, Washington. At harvest, we foot-stomped a small layer of fruit at the bottom of a tank and layered the remainder of the fruit on top, 100% whole cluster. The tank was then gassed and sealed for 20 days. Once opened, the grapes (mostly still fully intact) were pressed and fermentation was completed with native yeast. This wine was aged in terracotta amphora for 12 months followed by neutral oak for 5 addition...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Com Tu is a Garnacha from La Figuera, from white and red soils (with some more clay). It matured in old 4,000- and 5,000-liter oak vats for one year, a shorter élevage, as it's a lighter year. The fruit is a little riper, and the wine is juicy and has the austere tannins of the limestone soils. It reminds me of a Garnacha from Châteauneuf. 12,000 bottles produced. (LG)" (08/2019)

93 points James Suckling: "Very attractive and fresh wild raspberries and pomegranates with orange rind and licorice. The palate has immense tannin detail and is also super approachable." (06/2019) 92 points James Halliday: "Basso never fails to please. It's a cheery, juicy, lighter-framed wine with squishy raspberries and sweet wild strawberries with an interplay of grainy tannins; then add a savoury infusion. In hip bars, it's called totally smashable." (09/2020)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pegaso Arrebatacapas is the second vintage of the single-vineyard bottling from Cebreros (even though I'm not sure if the 2015 has been released yet). The 2016 is more expressive and elegant than the initial 2015. This goes very much in line with the Pegaso Pizarra, with a little more grip and some more tannins, and it might require a little more time in bottle. There were only 750 bottles produced in 2016. Deep, complex aromas of black cherry, truffle and clove are complicated by flinty minerals. Very dense but juicy, conveying an impression of brooding energy to its flavors of red cherry, smoky plum and aromatic herb. Still youthfully imploded but displays lovely balance, sneaky concentration and a very long, vibrant finish. Well done. (ID)" (06/2016)

Of the 2014 Horsepower "Sur Echalas Vineyard" Walla Walla Valley Grenache,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Reminding me of a hypothetical mix of blood and herbs (blood sausage?), with notes of earth, mushrooms, rose petal and strawberries, the 2014 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard is full-bodied, exotic and seamless, with building tannin and a gorgeous saltiness on the finish. Like these latest 2014s, it opens up with time in the gl

Of the 2017 Sine Qua Non "The Gorgeous Victim" California Grenache,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Medium garnet-purple, this young, bombastic Grenache explodes from the glass with the most incredible perfume: red roses, cinnamon stick, lilacs and crushed black cherries with chocolate box, aniseed, garrigue and dried herbs plus gentle waves of lavender, dusty soil and smoked meats. Full-bodied with an incredibly silky texture, the decadently fruited palate features amazing freshness and vibrancy, finishing with stacks of flavor layers and a provocatively savory/chewy lift coming from the use of whole cluster. Bid on this bottle of 2010 Sine Qua Non "Stockholm Syndrome" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100JD, 100RP, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The current release of the estate vineyard (a.k.a. the extended barrel-aged cuvee), the 2010 Grenache Stockholm Syndrome is an incredible effort that I couldn’t find a fault with. A blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 2% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, all from the Eleven Confession Vineyard, it spent just under 30 months in 22% new and 78% used French oak prior to bottling. Locked and loaded, it knocks it out of the park with its cassis, licorice, smoked duck, spice-box and exotic herb-styled bouquet. The palate follows suit and while it has the expected depth and richness of the estate, it’s seamless, elegant and lively, with perfect balance, ultra-fine tannin and a finish that just won’t quit. It doesn’t get any better and count yourself lucky if you can latch onto a couple of these. It will thrill for 15-20 years. (JD)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2010 Espelt "Vieilles Vignes" Garnacha Emporda (92RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A magnificent custom cuvee for Eric Solomon, this 2010 was made from high-elevation vineyards in the Costa Brava planted in granite. It was fashioned by the brilliant Jean-Marc Lafage, whose wines are reviewed elsewhere in this article. Composed of 100% Grenache aged 3 months in new French oak, it reveals copious aromas of raspberry jam, black currants, kirsch, flowers and forest floor, full body, terrific fruit, lots of complexity already, and a multidimensional mouthfeel. Drink this stunning red over the next 4-5 years." (06/2012)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and classic vintage for this exceptional wine produced from a single vineyard in Montsant. This has a forward personality—open, expressive and showy in the nose—from a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel. Some 6,000 bottles were fil...

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Pignan (Château Rayas) "Réservé" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (93RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Similar to the 1990, although slightly less port-like and without the color saturation of that wine, the full-throttle, robust, intense, rich 1989 Pignan coats the palate with layers of viscous fruit flavors, high alcohol, and an impressive velvety sweetness. This high-octane wine exhibits no signs of going into a closed stage. (RP)" (12/1996)

Wine Spectator: "Loaded with rich, dark layers of black currant, blackberry, truffle, tar, mocha and bittersweet cocoa, this pumps out both fruit and terroir on the gripping finish. Immense in scale and depth, this is hard to lay off now, but should be even more impressive when it drops its muscle to show more elegance (that will take a while, though). Of the 2015 Sine Qua Non "E - Eleven Confessions Vineyard" Sta. Remarkably light on its feet for such a sumptuous wine, the 2015 has so much to offer. Beautifully expressive aromatics make a strong opening impression. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, sweet spice and licorice develop with air, but it is the wine’s overall feel that stands out most. At times, the E is quite powerful, while in other moments it is much more delicate. That contrast makes for an utterly captivating wine. (A
