2018 Fèlsina "Berardenga" Chianti Classico
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "Perfumed and fresh with cherries, cedar and hints of dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a long, direct finish. Really lively and fresh. Very typical for a top Chianti Classico. " (05/2020) 92 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chianti Classico Berardenga is endowed with so much class. In 2018, the Classico is a bit more restrained than it can be. That mid-weight sense of structure, though, gives the wine quite a bit of early appeal. Even so, I would cellar the 2018 for a few years, as all the elements haven't fully...

2015 Carus Gaudio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "A dense and layered red with lots of chocolate, berry and wood character. Full and chewy. Yet, the tannins are not harsh or overdone." (09/2018)
Price: $29.99

2018 Farnetella Chianti Colli Senesi
Top Pick!
90 points James Suckling: "A delicate, fruity Chianti with cherry and lemon aromas. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fruity finish." (08/2020)
Price: $12.99

95 points James Suckling: "Aromatic and pretty with cherry, spice, walnut and light chocolate character on the nose. Medium to full body, round and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Impressive structure. " (07/2020)
Price: $17.99

91 points James Suckling: "A juicy, very ripe red with plum and currant character. Full body, round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish that verges on jammy, but is still attractive." (07/2019) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Inviting aromas of red-skinned fruit, underbrush and baking spice emerge from the glass. The savory palate offers red plum, cinnamon and star anise alongside velvety tannins. (KO)" (12/2020)
Price: $17.99

James Suckling: "A straightforward, fruity red with berry, cherry and chocolate character. Medium body, round tannins and a medium finish. " (07/2020) K&L Notes: Owned by the Tagliabue family since 1979, the wine growing on the estate dates back to the 17th century. Known for their Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, the name "Salvi" refers to the supposed health-giving effects of this terroir. Villa Poggio Salvi's modern winery is partly subterranean and set within the contours of the hillsides.

93 points Vinous: "The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baroncole is a great example of the year. Dark red and black fruit, smoke, tobacco and licorice wrap around the palate in a racy, voluptuous Chianti loaded with pure class and pedigree. Hints of game, tobacco and cedar add nuance on the finish. (AG)" (09/2014) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright medium red. Pungent, wild aromas of redcurrant, sweet spices, underbrush and flint. Silky and fine-grained, with heady minerality and floral character energizing the redcurra...

Jancis Robinson: "Scented clay, leather and red cherry. Crisp acidity and chewy tannins. Bright enough. Drink 2020 - 2023. (TJ)" (01/2020)

2017 Fèlsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "Plenty of fruit concentration with cherry and strawberry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and lots of concentration. Intense and rich. Give it a year or two to come together." (05/2020) 95 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained...

95 points Decanter: "A selection made from the San Marcellino vineyard which includes a plot of 50-year-old vines. The soil here is extremely rocky, composed mainly of alberese - a hard marl rich in calcium carbonate which tends to give deeply coloured wines. There is a lot to love in this wine. Enticing red and black currants are demurely nuanced with toast and spice. Ample and mouth filling without being heavy, the palate is abundantly layered with velvety textured tannins. Purity of fruit is preserved throughout and this finishes with mouth-watering s...

2017 Fontodi "Filetta di Lamole" Chianti Classico (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Chewy and rich with attractive cherry and dried-strawberry character, as well as intense tannins. Dried flowers, too. This is traditional and structured. Very tight. Needs time to soften." (10/2020) 92 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole is absolutely gorgeous. In 2017, the Filetta di Lamole has a bit more body than usual because of the warmth of the year, and yet it retains its classic sense of energy and mid-weight structure. Crushed red berry, spice, mint, licorice and rose petal all open up in this...

1990 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva 'Il Poggio'
New!
92 points Vinous: "(90% sangiovese and 10% canaiolo nero and colorino; pH 3.32; total acidity 6.0 g/l; 14.3% alcohol): Saturated medium ruby-red. Superripe aromas of redcurrant, strawberry jelly, botanical herbs and mocha, with a slightly candied quality and a whiff of maple butter. Sweet, plush and broad, crammed with ripe red cherry, tea leaf and licorice flavors. This rich, fat, ripe wine finishes creamy-sweet, with melting tannins. Drinking beautifully now, but has the stuffing and acidity to last another 15 years. (ID)" (02/2013) Wine Spectator: "...

2016 Tenuta Santedame (Ruffino) Chianti Classico (Elsewhere $24) (Elsewhere $24)
Top Pick!
Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of dark-skinned fruit, ground pepper and baking spice lead the nose. The straightforward palate offers red plum, star anise and clove alongside smooth tannins. (KO)" (04/2020)
Price: $14.99

93 points Decanter: "It is strange to see a bright red wine, and to smell ripe pinky-yellow peach. But I am told that peach is not such an unusual note for the Sangiovese from this hillcrest, along which the great estates Isole e Olena, Paneretta and Monsanto sit, looking out towards the Tyrrhenian sea. Winemaker Paolo de Marchi is a great fan of the native Canaiolo Nero and blends in 15%, contributing a black/violet colour, breadth, softness and spice to balance the austerity of Sangiovese. A consistently excellent wine. (EO)" (12/2020) 93 points Jame...

2018 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "A racy, fine-tuned Chianti Classico with blackberry, black-cherry and wet-earth aromas. Medium-bodied with medium polished tannins and a long finish. Transparent. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (06/2020) 92 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, mid-weight wine that captures the essence of the estate's high-altitude vineyards. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, licorice, mint, pine and cedar are some of the many aromas and flavors that are woven throughout. The 2018 is gracious, inviting...

2017 Fontodi "Vigna del Sorbo" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
96 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask. (AG) 9...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fragrant and delicious, this opens with aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, blue flower, leather, underbrush and a whiff of French oak. The full-bodied, enveloping palate delivers baked plum, Marasca cherry, licorice and a note of espresso framed in fine-grained enveloping tannins that give it a smooth texture and a weightless finesse. (KO)" (09/2020) 94 points James Suckling: "A rich, layered CC with intense cherry and flower character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish....

93 points James Suckling: "There is some good richness to this Chianti Classico with blackberries, nutmeg, hazelnuts and a touch of spices and Christmas cake. Full body, ripe and round tannins, zesty acidity and a medium to long finish." (06/2018) 92 points Decanter: "Marco Bacci has owned this expansive Castelnuovo Berardenga property since 1998 and has significantly increased the Gran Selezione production since the inaugural 2013 vintage - from 10,000 to 50,000 bottles. The 2016 release is robust and big-boned but with a savoury and mellow personalit...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this iconic vintage. This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. Tar, tobacco and licorice appear as delicate background tones, giving more volume and texture to the wine's sensorial impact. Vigna del Sorbo shows its own precise identity that is fiercely faithful to Sangiovese, but that ...

2015 Castello di Monsanto "Il Poggio" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "First produced in 1962, Il Poggio is an iconic Chianti Classico that stands the test of time. The Bianchi family puts aside 2,000 bottles each vintage in its extensive underground tunnel for release at least 10 years later. Still nascent, the 2015 slowly divulges stunning aromas of cherry blossom, blood orange, eucalyptus, and raspberry. It starts out tight and linear then unravels expanding across the palate with ripe woodland berries underscored by slate. Chalky tannins maintain a firm grip throughout. This will continue to deliver...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Perfumed and loaded with finesse, this fragrant red opens with heady scents of fragrant purple flower, woodland berry, camphor and an earthy whiff of tilled soil. On the savory radiant palate, bright acidity and sleek tannins accompany juicy black cherry, raspberry and star anise. (KO)" (09/2020) 92 points Vinous: "The 2018 Chianti Classico is fabulous. In 2018, the Chianti Classico is a pretty big wine for this estate, but it's also a serious wine that absolutely needs time in bottle to find its center. Black cherry, tobacc...

98 points James Suckling: "This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so." (04/2019) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this icon...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chianti Classico Reserva Rancia is chiseled and focused. It offers a full spectrum of Sangiovese characteristics with balsamic herb and medicinal tones followed by crushed stone and delicate clove or nutmeg. Rancia is equally impressive in the mouth with firm structure and enduring fruit flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. This is one of the nicest collections of new releases by Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s Felsina. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate c...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted young, the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia shows a darker color of fruit (compared to the lither and more delicate 2016 vintage that I tasted at the same time). Sangiovese grapes were naturally concentrated by the heat and dryness of the vintage, and the oak signature is more prominent here (the wine sees 24 months in barrique). I'd definitely suggest putting this wine aside in your cellar to allow for better integration. I kept my open bottle at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and tasted it aga...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Marco Ricasoli’s grandfather planted the San Marcellino vineyard in 1966, and the vines range in age from 20 to 50 years. They impart a deep concentration that feels especially rich and layered in the warm 2015 vintage. The wine opens with bold cherry and blackberry flavors that take on nuances of tobacco, black olive and dried thyme. The tannins are ripe and chewy, holding the flavors firmly together as the wine progresses to a long, elegant finish." (04/2020) 94 points Wine Spectator: "A broad, dense red, with ripe plum, bl...

97 points Decanter: "The south-facing Rancia vineyard reaches altitudes of 420 metres, overlooking the lower-lying vineyards of Colli Senesi. It boasts complex soils of calcareous clay layered with the chalky white limestone-like alberese and schistose galestro. This 2016 vintage is simply stunning. It's stately yet gracious, with personality for days, leading with a sumptuous nose of smoke, exotic spice and iron-rich earth. Ripe fruit coats the mouth yet it remains buoyant and tangy as chalky tannins charge in to frame the palate. A seductive wine with ...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Felsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva (95RP, 95ST, 95VN, 93WE, 91WS, 90DC). Vinous: "The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is cool, inward and reserved at this stage. Much less expressive than it was from barrel, today the 2010 appears to be in a closed phase. There is so much tension in the glass, though, and I can hardly wait to see where the 2010 goes over the coming years. A burst of mineral and floral infused fruit lingers on the polished, nuanced finish. Today, the 2010 seems to bring together the finesse of 2004 with the structure and power of the 2010. A pretty magical combination, if you ask me. (AG) 95+" (08/2013)

Bid on this magnum of 2010 Felsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva (1.5L) (95RP, 95VN, 93WE, 91WS). Vinous: "Bright, fully saturated red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, minerals, sweet spices and violet; the most ethereal nose of any Rancia since the 2006 vintage. Juicy, pure and precise if youthfully tight, offering lovely inner-mouth energy and perfume to the complex flavors of red berries enlivened by orange peel, sweet spices and flowers. Finishes very long and brisk, with juicy acidity that leaves the taste buds vibrating. An absolute beauty, and much less marked by the tobacco, tar and inky notes that have characterized some recent Rancia vintages. For example, even though 2009 and 2010 are both potentially outstanding vintages for Chianti Classico, there is simply no comparison between this wine and the Rancia 2009. (ID)" (09/2014)
