2017 Domaine Petroni Corse Rouge
Top Pick!
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Niellucciu, Grenache and Syrah come from this 19th-century estate. The wine is structured and firm, ripe with red-berry flavors while also having plenty of acidity. Spicy and fruity, the wine is ready to drink. *Editors' Choice* (RV)" (03/2020) Wine Spectator: "Fresh black cherry and red currant fruit mingles with rosemary, violet and chalk notes. Shows good cut and purity on the finish. (JM)" (11/2019) K&L Notes: Domaine Petroni is an estate on the eastern side of Corsica near Lake Diane. Lake Diane is a famous lagoon, wh...

This 14-hectare estate has belonged to the Gaussen family for six generations. Located in one of the warmer and drier parts of Bandol, its soils are heavy in clay and limestone, meaning that most of the vineyard labor is done by hand out of necessity. Produced from old vines (and therefore from smaller grapes) the resulting wines are full and flavorful. When drunk young, the flavors of this wine are licorice, morello cherry and blackcurrant; and after 10 years of good keeping they have the aromas of leather, undergrowth, licorice, truffles, venison.

Guillaume and Soledad Tari run this beautiful estate in the elevated seaside appellation of Bandol. Bandol is an incredible micro-climate with its concave shaped vineyards that gain the exposure of the sun and the cooling effects of the seaside breezes, all while making powerfully rich Mourvedre based wines that evolve beautifully over the years. The Bandol is a blend of 65% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache and 10% Cinsault with an average vine age of 25 years. Just starting to develop, the Begude offers up deep black fruited flavors accompanied by notes of anis...

97 points Decanter: "Complex nose with deep black berry fruits, spice and hints of polish. Really lovely texture with layers of creamy red and black fruits, spices and powerful but super fine tannins. Great expression of the appellation; powerfully long. (DWWA 2020)" (10/2020) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine comes from the highest point of the Bégude estate, a 1,200-foot elevation overlooking the Mediterranean. Wood aged and offering spiciness as well as acidity and red fruits, the wine is almost entirely produced from structured Mourvèdre. Tanni...

David Schildknecht writes: "On a high, windswept granitic plateau near Monte Grossu (east of Calvi) known as E Prove, Michel Raoust vinifies in the vast former olive processing facility that father-in-law Roger Maestracci converted into a winery when he planted vineyards immediately after World War II. The facility permits the reds extended elevage, including time in large oaken foudres. Extreme diurnal temperature variation along with the influence of wind seems – as with many wines grown in places that share those traits – to favor pronounced phenolics...

From Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant: "When Lucie "Lulu" Tempier married Lucien Peyraud in 1936, her father gave them Domaine Tempier, an active farm that had been in the family since 1834, near Le Plan du Castellet, just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol. Tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol (a wedding gift from his father-in-law) inspired Lucien to research the terroir of Bandol extensively. Up until that point, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been systematically replanted to higher-yielding varietals. Howeve...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 & 2003 Domaine Tempier "La Tourtine" Bandol Tasting Lot, including 1-bottle of 2001 Domaine Tempier "La Tourtine" Bandol (91WS) and 1-bottle of 2003 Domaine Tempier "La Tourtine" Bandol (92JD). Of the 2003 Domaine Tempier "La Tourtine" Bandol ,Jeb Dunnuck writes: "When I first opened this, it showed huge mushroom and earth notes but after a couple hours in the decanter, it was amazingly clean and surprisingly ripe and fruity. Blueberry, blackberry, earth, wood and subtle mushroom notes show up and this would be locked up tight one moment and then singing the next. The palate was medium to full bodied and while very tight, it showed pure, ripe fruit, big structure and subtle tannins on the long finish." (09/2007)

(KM)" (08/2003)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Domaine Trevallon "Les Baux" Coteaux d'Aix (96VN, 94RP). Vinous: "I was totally floored by Domaine de Trévallon's 1990 Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Les Baux. It was fabulous with the beef, but the truth is it would have been great with anything, or nothing at all. Sweet layers of fruit, subtle herbs, cedar, tobacco and spices were all present in the glass, but the wine was really more about textural silkiness and elegance, both of which it showed in spades. Readers lucky enough to still be cellaring bottles can look forward to as much as another decade of fine drinking. What a wine! (AG)" (02/2012)
