91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This young, fruity wine comes from vines owned by the Pitault-Landry family. It has an edge of tannins and freshly spicy fruits. Smoky, perfumed and packed with berry flavors, the wine will develop further. Drink from 2022. (RV)" (07/2020) K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight ...

Wine Enthusiast: "This is an attractive, black-fruit-flavored wine. Light tannins and acidity are already well integrated and balanced with the fruits. The wine is ready to drink. (RV)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: Established over 50 years ago, the 4th generation of the Denis family now runs this operation. Julien is the winemaker, Stephane in charge of the viticulture and Vincent oversees the administration and sales. Over the last decades the property has grown from 5 to 80 hectares that stretch across the appellation including some very select parcels in...

Wine Spectator: "This fleshy red shows black cherry, spice and herb flavors with firm tannins. It has good concentration and while it's drinkable now, it should improve. " (06/1997) K&L Notes: Joël Taluau was a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, unmarred by the intrusion of oak--which he hasn't used in production since 1986. He was also the first producer in the appellation to begin domaine bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot of Cabernet Franc planted...

Joël Taluau was a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling.

He was also the first producer in the appellation to begin domaine bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot of Cabernet Franc planted in 1934, is prized for its power, depth and grace. This flagship wine is meant to age, and the large format bottle will have helped to preserve freshness.

A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generations. They are a small artisanal producer that oversees every stage of production from start to finish themselves. They have roughly 30 hectares of Cabernet Franc spread out through the Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bo...

Typically when you think Sancerre, you think crisp and chalky white wine. But the region also produces phenomenal Pinot Noir. One of the aspects of Sancerre that makes for great Sauvignon Blanc is the limestone and flint soils, which lend depth of minerality and gorgeous aromatics. These same soil characteristics also make for incredible Pinot Noir with plenty of depth and personality. One of our best new-direct import producers in Sancerre, Aurore Dezat, makes just such a wine. If you love silky, round Pinot Noir with gorgeous dark cherry notes and laye...

2017 La Source du Ruault Saumur-Champigny
Top Pick!
When Jean Noel Millon took over winemaking and farming at his family's estate in 1998, he represented the seventh generation to do so. The 10-hectare farm is certified organic and Millon complements the soil with herbal teas and homemade composts to strengthen the vines' natural defenses. Winery tasting notes: "It is the emblematic wine of the estate with its aromatic expression of red fruit. The palate is crunchy and juicy with ripe, fresh fruit which gives it good drinkability." *organic*

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Impressively saturated ruby-red color. Complex aromas of black raspberry, kirsch, Valrhona chocolate, smoke and gunflint. Tactile and quite concentrated; really dense with extract. Ripe acidity gives the deep flavors lovely clarity. A real fruit essence: the wine somewhat chewy tannins and alcohol are hidden by fruit. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

93 points Vinous: "From one of Baudry’s top limestone sites. Aged 12 months in 2- to 5-year-old barrels, then rests for nine months in cement tanks. Still young and rambunctious, very juicy and full of energy, very like Pinot-like. It’s one of the fruitier Baudry expressions, with lots of black and sour cherry, some blackberry and tomato, and light stoniness on the finish. Give this a year or two and it will pay back your patience. (JW)" (07/2020) K&L Notes: 94-96 pts from Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "This sample was tasted from cement cuve, the wi...

90 points Vinous: "Le Temps des Cerises (or “Cherry Time!” as Jérôme jokes) is Domaine de la Noblaie’s everyday Chinon and represents half of their Cabernet Franc production. Bright ruby. Classic fresh and savory Chinon nose, delivering lots of black pepper, tomato and olive. On the palate, thought, it’s plush and fruity, with fleshy plum and ripe cherry, balanced by chalk and more black pepper. Aged five months in stainless steel. (JR)" (07/2020) K&L Notes: 92-94 Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "Jérôme’s entry-level red cuvée comes from the majority o...

94 points Vinous: "L’Huisserie is full of silex (limestone and flint). Less bright and more autumnal than 2018, offering forest aromas and ripe wild berry. On the palate, lots of ripe plum and blackberry, and on the finish, stony, even a little bloody, with a touch of campfire. Beautifully complex and textured. There’s a good, lean rustic quality to this. Wonderful value for such an accomplished wine. Aged one year in older barrique, then in cement for six months. (JW)" (07/2020) 92 points Decanter: "This wine comes from vines on flinty clay soil at th...

Importer's Notes: Domaine Tessier was founded in 1961 by Roger Tessier, with his son Philippe taking the reins 20 years later in 1981. They are located in the heart of the Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny AOC’s and currently have 23 ha of vines. The vineyard exists in a microclimate that keeps the vineyards cool, situated between the Loire River and the forest of Cheverny, Chambord and Solonge and has been Ecocert certified since 1998. Philippe believes that a wine should be the expression of the place from which it comes and should reflect the climatic condi...

91 points Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "This cuvée brings us to the soils of Bourgueil, another entry-level cuvée analogous to La Source. It used to be called La Coudraye, but the name has been changed now to reflect the sourcing of fruit from a number of other parcels alongside La Coudraye, including three lieux-dits named Les Sables, Les Pins and Les Perrières with mostly sandy soils. I have to own up to an error in my previous tasting note, as Côte 50 refers to the altitude of these various parcels, which sit on the côte at an altitude of 50 metres ...

91 points Vinous: "The 2017 has more complexity and depth than the 2018. Selection from 60- to 70-year-old vines, aged 18 months in cement tank. Classic nose of violet, blackberry, black pepper and even a touch of jalapeño. In the mouth, this is very straight and savory, featuring black cherry, black olive, bay leaf and layers of dark minerality. The finish is attractive and long, full of smoke and tobacco leaf. Baudry's Les Granges may be his workhorse Chinon but it always lands as one of the sexiest and most fulfilling Chinons released each year. From vines aged 30+ years all planted over sand and gravelly soils, this is bright, refreshing and exotic. All fermentation and elevage are done in concrete tanks preserving that vibrant fruit. An outstanding value from one of the leaders in Chinon.
