Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Zuri grapes, this is classic Txakoli: zippy, crisp, tart green apple flavors are enlivened by a lovely sparkle from the CO2 retained in tank during fermentation.

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just before it was bottled, I tasted a sample of the new 2019 Rosé produced with Garnacha from Campo de Borja. It's a very pale pink and has a perfumed nose with notes of flowers and white fruit. They harvested early and achieved a wine of 14% alcohol (a bit high for my liking), denoting a warm and dry year, but the wine feels in balance. It's quite bright, with delicate aromas of dried flowers, subtle and elegant. The palate is tasty, with pungent flavors and good depth. It was kept with fine lees for two mon...

2019 Bodegas Lanzaga (Telmo Rodríguez) "LZ" Rioja
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Very pretty and aromatic with plum and orange peel with floral undertones. Medium to full body, with very fine tannins and a beautiful, fine-grained finish. Drinkable now, but a year or two will real show it off. From organically grown grapes. " (09/2020) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It was not an easy vintage in Rioja, where they saw drought, bad fruit setting and minor damage from frost and hail, all of which caused a reduction in yields. But the end of the season was dry, the grapes were healthy, and based on ...

92 points James Suckling: "So much pink-grapefruit and fresh white-peach character on the nose. Medium-bodied and very energetic with lively fruit and acidity. Fun to taste. Drink now." (10/2020)

Marta Castro produces this tasty Albariño from vines located in the Salnés Valley town of Ribadumia, just a bit inland from Cambados. Given five months of lees aging in the tank, this is an Albariño with juicy stone fruit flavors, a round texture, and well balanced acidity. Delicious, representative, and a good value in Albariño.

Produced from 100% estate-grown, organically cultivated Xarel-lo, from their oldest plants (40+ years old), this is the taste of well farmed Xarel-lo: salty, with a touch of the ever-present fennel that grows wildly in the zone. The Garriga family, with Toni and Jordi currently at the helm, have been farming this land since the 17th century. While their cava is among our most popular sparkling wines in the store, it is absolutely worth emphasizing that their still wines are also incredibly well made and delicious.

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. This is made from 100% Tempranillo grown in iron rich clay soils. In fact, this red t...

Based in the Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a truly original bodega producing tasty, characterful wine for laughably low prices. They grow all their own grapes in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and visible snow covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Rosado is made from Garnacha and white Viura grapes in a typical "clarete" style for which this ...

La Nevera is a wine blended and packaged in Aldeanueva, Rioja, and it consists primarily of Viura, the backbone to Rioja white wines. It is crisp, mineral, refreshing and (the best part!) available exclusively as a three liter bag in box. The bag in box, long a popular format in Europe, has finally started to catch on here. And with good reason, as it allows you to open a box and enjoy its contents for days, even weeks, with no drop off in flavor. For the equivalent of $6.25 per bottle, this is one white value that you do not want to miss! Keep it around...

Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Beltza grapes, this rosé shows a lovely balance between fresh red berries, hints of watermelon, a very subtle, pleasant bitterness and fizzy quality. It's delicious with cured cheeses (something slightly smoky like Idiazabal works really well), charcuterie, anchovies or your favorite cured ham ...

This is a delicious, clean and fresh, forward style of Rioja, packed in a 3-liter bag-in-box for maximum value. The bag-in-box, long a popular format in Europe, has finally started to catch on in the United States. And with good reason, as it allows you to open a box and enjoy its contents for days, even weeks, with no drop off in flavor. For the equivalent of $6.25 per bottle, this is one red value that you do not want to miss!

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2019 Zárate is their entry-level Albariño, a vintage with structure and acidity, still very young, a powerful vintage with more of everything and probably a long-distance runner. It's varietal and clean, characterful, powerful and with a long, tasty finish, vibrant and almost salty. 64,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2020. (LG)" (06/2020)

90 points Vinous: "Deep, shimmering violet. Spice-accented cherry, blackberry and licorice scents are complemented by a hint of cracked pepper. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering dark berry and cherry compote flavors that take on a floral nuance with aeration. Shows good energy and lift on the clinging finish, which features rounded tannins and a suggestion of bitter cherry. All stainless steel. (JR)" (02/2021) K&L Notes: Bodegas Torremorón is a small co-op located in the hamlet of Quintanamanvirgo. Located in the north-central part of Ribera del Du...

The Bodegas Casa Monte Pío is a small family winery that was established in 1979. It is located in the Salnes Valley which is considered the heart of the Rias Baixas region. The vines are planted in primarily granitic sandy soils and they are farmed organically with some biodynamic principles. They are obsessed with the healthy of their soils and vines. This obsession is seen in the ripeness and purity of their fruit which is contrasted by the classic mineral salinity which the region is known for.

92 points James Suckling: "This is a very pretty white with dense, ripe fruit and freshness at the same time. It’s full-bodied and flavorful with a creamy texture and lively acidity." (11/2020) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This white is sneaky intense. Subtle aromas of chalk and heather give way to expressive flavors of pear, mango and sea salt. Well-integrated acidity provides a firm structure that gives way to a long, juicy finish. (TM)" (12/2020) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Maruxa Godello was produced with purchased grapes and those fro...

Bodegas La Cana is the newest joint project from Jorge Ordonez and the Gil family of Jumilla. The vines were planted in 1966 in the northern part of Rias Baixas close to the Atlantic ocean. The classic sandy soils of the region and cool climate produce a vibrant wine of tremendous acidity and complexity. The wine is partially barrel fermented and all of it spends time sur lie to enhance the richness of the varietal. It has a range of citrus flavors, stony minerality and a mouthwatering finish.

While the 2019 Rosado has yet to be professionally reviewed, this bottling from Bermejos has been a consistent 90+ point performer, with the 2018 garnering the following review from Vinous' Josh Raynolds: "Pale translucent orange. Mineral-accented red berries and blood orange on the incisive nose, along with subtle herb and floral nuances in the background. Juicy and light on its feet, offering intense bitter cherry, red currant and orange pith flavors that tighten up on the back half. Finishes with firm, minerally cut, leaving a sexy floral note behind....

Produced from Diego grapes, grown in the volcanic soils of the Lanzarote D.O., this is simultaneously bright and creamy, with a mineral quality that leaves a tasty and slightly drier impression than their other white from Malvasia grapes. Delicious Canary white!

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first Albariño to be bottled is the 2019 Leirana, which I was also able to compare with the 2018 vintage. It's the one that represents the character of the Valle del Salnés, as it's produced with grapes from different villages across the valley. This ferments in a combination of 60% stainless steel vats and 40% oak foudres, where the wine matures for six months. Contrary to what I've seen at other addresses, this 2019 is very closed and backward; it's a vintage with very high acidity, citrus and salt. This is...

2019 Edetària "Via Edetana" Blanca Terra Alta

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Kinki is different from the 2018, as the red grapes were riper and had more aromatic influence, a little wilder and with a saline twist. But there's better acidity here. It was bottled one week before I tasted it, and the wine was showing well. It's a lot more serious than the initial 2018, which might have have been a little radical. This feels more complex and has depth, clout and nuance. Surprisingly enough, there is more freshness, too, and a more defined palate with more precision. I still see the s...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The regular Albariño is one of the most reliable among the more available wines, and it tends to show well early on and also age nicely for a few years in bottle. The 2019 Albariño de Fefiñanes feels unusually expressive and ready, very approachable, with a harmonious nose but with none of that reductive character often found in the early bottled wines. It's floral, varietal, aromatic and clean, with a balanced palate combining volume with great freshness. I tend to like this wine two or three years after the har...

Zarate is legendary in the Salnes sub-zone of Rias Baixas. They were the first to bottle single vineyard Albariños, highlighting different terroirs within the region. Their wines are always amongst the most linear, acid forward, and structured of Albariños. Palomar is a small parcel of ungrafted vines that date back to the 1850's. The wine is aged in a single large (2200L) neutral barrel where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. This is elevated Albariño, with more richness depth and texture without loss of purity, precision and the clas Val de Salne...
