2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "Grown on sandstone and marl, the fruit for this wine is hand-picked, destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts then bottled without filtration or fining after maturation in old foudres. It's a beautifully natural expression of strawberry and raspberry fruits, with a juicy slick of crushed berries flowing across your tongue, ending with some massy, textural tannins. A perfectly balanced, joyful and drinkable expression of 2017 Gigondas with incredible purity. (MW)" (10/2018) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I loved the 2017 Gigondas Ven...

2017 Domaine de Verquière Côtes-du-Rhône
Top Pick!
The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for many generations and is now managed Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was recently certified organic. The Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. Verquière recently returned to us after a long hiatus and we are pleased to have them back.

2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas
Top Pick!
93 points Decanter: "Grown on clay-limestone and marl, the fruit is hand-picked with no destemming, and is aged in old foudres. The wine is pretty, bright and open, with raspberry, strawberry and violet fruits. It's barely medium-bodied, but has a lovely expression of fresh and easy red berry fruits, accompanied by a juicy berry acidity and gentle blackberry-skin tannins on the finish. An easy-going and highly drinkable Gigondas. Just lovely. (MW)" (10/2018) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The classic 2017 Gigondas Tradition cuvée from this estate is a real wi...

Wine Spectator: "Fresh and direct, with a violet and lilac frame around a core of cherry and cassis flavors, all carried by a warm stone note on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 5,250 cases made, 3,800 cases imported. (JM)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: Jacques Coipel worked in the petrol industry until 2002 when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Côtes du Rhone Village Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at around 1,200 feet with a mix of clay, limestone and gravel making up the soils. With c...

91 points Decanter: "An assemblage of two different terroirs: yellow marls overlaid with large pebbles at higher altitude, and clay-limestone on the plain. The fruit is all hand-harvested, destemmed then fermented with gentle extraction. The wine is aged in large oak foudres for four months before bottling. It's deep and juicy, with appealing plum and blueberry fruits. There's more blackberry on the palate, along with dense tannins. It's very well balanced and well structured, with good length. A good value pick among the 2017 Rasteaus. (MW)" (10/2018) ...

Top Pick!
93 points Wine Spectator: "Bright, with cherry, damson plum and raspberry coulis flavors streaming through, flanked by floral and rooibos tea hints and carrying through a racy, sanguine-tinged finish that is sneakily long. Well done. Best from 2020 through 2035. (JM)" (11/2019) K&L Notes: One of our most popular direct imports, the price-to-quality ratio we've found in these wines year after year is simply unbeatable. 2017 Domaine de la Ganse Vacqueyras
Top Pick!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Vacqueyras La Ganse offers the classic ripe yet structured style of the vintage as well as terrific red and black fruits, peppery herbs, and garrigue aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, textured, and with ripe tannins, give bottles another year and it should keep for 7-8." (09/2019) K&L Notes: Coralie Onde is from the winemaking family behind Domaine les Ondines, but opted to start her own project independent of her family estate in 2008. She formed Domaine de la Ganse in Vacqueyras when she purchased some terrif...

2017 Chateau de L'Ou "Infiniment" Côtes Catalanes Rouge
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Cotes Catalanes Infiniment De L'Ou comes from vines around the estate, which is located on the lower plains of the Roussillon, not too far from the Les Aspres region. Awesome notes of blueberries, crushed violets, incense, toasted bread, and spice all give way to a perfumed, sweetly fruited, seamless red that has no hard edges and beautifully polished tannins. Drink through 2027." (09/2019) K&L Notes: Séverine Bourrier came to winemaking through her own passion for the subject, not having the family history associated w...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The primary production of the estate, the 2017 Terrasses du Larzac La Réserve d’O is a blend of 45% each Grenache and Syrah, plus 10% Cinsault. Aged in tank and amphorae, it's a delicious blend of cherries, raspberries and blueberries with garrigue and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky in texture, with only soft, ephemeral tannins on the finish. (JC)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an ...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of Grenache and Syrah that was brought up in a mix of clay tanks and 500-liter barrels, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Compartir offers an awesome nose of black raspberries, crushed flowers, exotic spices, and earth, with just hints of subtle background oak. This full-bodied beauty has tons of charm, a layered, seamless texture, and enough structure to keep for upward of a decade. It’s just another brilliant wine from this great winemaker." (11/2018)

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Soft scents of pressed carnation, plum skin, game meat and curing spice form the nose of this Syrah-Grenache blend. The palate is smooth and creamy at first, but then offers firmly structured tannins that carry through to the dry, gripping close. Ripe fruit flavors abound, with spicy waves of blackberry, plum and boysenberry all dancing through the close. *Best Buy* (LB)" (10/2019) Jeb Dunnuck: "The base red from this estate is the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Château De L'Ou, a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up al...

Top Pick!
90 points Vinous: "Inky ruby. Spice-accented blackberry, licorice and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose, along with a cracked pepper nuance that adds spicy lift. (JR)" (11/2019) Wine Spectator: "A zesty little blend, with medium-bodied cherry and smoky cracked pepper flavors. (TF)" (10/2019)

2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes-du-Rhône
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "Abundant, rich and ripe red fruit with lightly spiced pastry and quite brambly complexity. The palate has a super fleshy, bold and upfront-tannin shape. Fresh and easy." (10/2019) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still not yet bottled for my June visit (it was scheduled to be bottled at the end of the month), the final blend of the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was showing plenty of garrigue and dried-spice notes layered over cherry fruit. Full-bodied, silky textured and long on the finish, it should...

90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Blackberries, currants, Asian spice, and licorice notes all emerge from the 2017 Côtes Du Rhône Villages Plan De Dieu, and it's a fleshy, nicely textured, balanced red. The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah brought up all in concrete tanks. Drink it over the coming 6-7 years." (08/2019) Wine Spectator: "Charming, with a stream of cherry and red currant fruit carried by light sandalwood and tobacco accents. Drink now through 2020. (JM, Web Only-2019)"

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Currant, lavender, garrigue, and pepper spice notes emerge from the 2017 Cotes Du Roussillon Villages Lilac Wine, and it's elegant, balanced and incredibly complete on the palate. With fine tannins, moderate acidity, and a great finish, it's another rock star wine from Jeff Carrel. The blend is 45% Syrah, 30% Carignan, and 25% Grenache, brought up all in larger oak tanks." (09/2019) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A bit floral on the nose, with grapey notes and hints of meat and mocha, the 2017 Lilac Wine delivers ripe...

Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley sitting on the opposite bank of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Domaine de l'Ermitage which produces three terrific values with eminent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named ...

Alain Corcia founded his negociant company back in 1983. Originally focused on bottling Burgundy, they expanded their grower relationships to include wines from the Rhone, Bordeaux and even Champagne. Our relationship with Alain goes back over three decades and he and his wife Patricia have supplied us with some of our greatest values from their respective regions. As a negociant, Alain is very hands on with the wines, making each one in its home region and choosing not to blend across appellations, all the better to reflect each wine's true terroir. ...

2017 Clos de l'Anhel "Lolo de l'Anhel" Corbières
Top Pick!
"My name is Sophie Guiraudon and I am a winemaker since ZERO generation!", says Sophie proudly. Sophie was working in other peoples' wineries in southern France for years. In 2000, Sophie started her own bio-dynamic, organic winery. She wanted to grow grapes that her son could eat right off of the vines. The "Lolo de l'Anhel" is typically a blend of 81% of Carignan, 10% of Syrah, 7% of Grenache Noir, and 2% Mourvèdre. The grapes are hand picked, gently vacuum pressed, and finished with 100% tank aging.

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Longtime readers will know that I love this cuvée, which is year in, year out, one of the great value buys out there. The 2017 Terrasses is even better than the 2016 and ranks with the finest vintages I’ve tasted, matching the stunning 2010. The essence of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, and wildflowers flow to a full-bodied, plump, deep, beautifully layered and sexy wine that has medium to full body, ripe tannins, notable minerality, and a great finish. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that was all destemmed and brought u...

90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the reds, the 2017 The Offering checks in as a blend of 45% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 21% Mourvèdre, and 1% Viognier aged 17 months in 27% new oak. Its ruby/plum color gives way to a great nose of blackberries, ground pepper, herbes de Provence, and licorice. Medium-bodied, with plenty of fruit and good balance, it’s California's answer to an outstanding Côtes du Rhône." (10/2019) K&L Notes: Curt Schalchlin is owner/winemaker/sole employee of Sans Liege, a Cal-Rhône dynamo from the Central Coast. Schalchlin made his first b...

2017 Tablas Creek "Patelin de Tablas" Paso Robles Rhône Blend
Back In Stock!
90-92 points Vinous: "Glass-staining ruby. Perfumed aromas of ripe, spice-tinged dark berries and candied flowers pick up an exotic suggestion of apricot as the wine opens up. Silky and energetic in style, offering sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave touch of Asian spices. Takes a sweet turn on the gently tannic, persistent finish and leaves a note of candied flowers behind. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a great core of black plum and dark berry to the nose of this blend of 48% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 16% Mou...

89-91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lots of spring flowers, sappy underbrush, and ripe black cherry notes emerge from the 2017 Gigondas from Domaine Cecile Chassange. A co-fermented blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, aged in older oak, it displays medium to full body, the charming, moderate depth of the vintage, and ripe, sweet tannins. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate and keep for a decade." (09/2018) 88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Herbal, stemmy notes intrude on mocha and berry flavors in the 2017 Gigondas, a blend of 80% G...

2017 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Top Pick!
95 points Decanter: "At Beaucastel the Grenache and Cinsault are fermented in cement while the Syrah and Mourvèdre are fermented in foudre. The result features finely pixellated fruits of the forest on the nose, with a full-bodied but mightily fresh and lively palate. The Mourvèdre element is strong this year, bringing vibrancy and power. It's firmly savoury, very dry and dramatic. A very tannic year has produced a seriously structured Beaucastel for the long term. (MW)" (10/2018) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another sunny, b...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) shows more classic Mourvèdre notes, with blackcurrants, Asian spices, crushed violets, cured meats, and graphite all giving way to a power packed, opulent, hedonistic 2017 that does everything right. Incredible depth of fruit, building tannins, no hard edges, and a finish to die for are all part of the package." (08/2019) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With its more discreet oak and layers of complexity, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Ma...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Awesome notes of kirsch, camphor, graphite, and crushed flowers as well as plenty of savory minerality emerge from the 2017 Ventoux Il Etait Une Fois, a seamless, medium to full-bodied wine that makes the most of the vintage. This cuvée is always Grenache-dominated (there's 10% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, brought up all in foudre), and I suspect it will keep for 10-15 years." From the producer: "70% SYRAH, 25% PETITE SIRAH, 5% VIOGNIER. Vineyards are all located in Mendocino County - a mix of ancient alluvial soils and volcanic materials at elevations ranging from 700- 1200 feet. Grapes were harvested over a period of a month from mid-September to mid-October for optimal ripeness according to variety and elevation. The grapes were then destemmed into tank for daily pumpovers and an 18 day maceration period. Wild yeast primary fermentation in tank (Syrah & Viognier co-fermented) followed by racking in to a combination of fou...

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even better than I remember it being last year, and potentially edging out the L'Argnée this vintage, the 2017 Gigondas Clos des Tourelles is just flat-out terrific juice. From yields around 15 hectoliters per hectare, it's 80% Grenache and 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, all aged in foudre. Soaring floral notes of rose petals, violets and garrigue appear on the nose, followed by ripe raspberry flavors that flow almost weightlessly across the silky, full-bodied palate. So fine, so elegant, so long, it nearly lef...

94 points Decanter: "Sourced from lieu-dit Les Bédines, the fruit is destemmed and fermented in concrete, then matured 75% in foudre and 25% in demi-muid. Loganberry and bay leaf notes display burgeoning complexity, leading to a very full-bodied and flowing palate with highly polished red berry fruit. It has great finesse in a highly tailored style, with incredible silkiness to the tannins - they're plentiful but super-fine. Captivating and seductive. (MW) " (10/2018) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More elegant as well as more complex, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du...

2017 Jeff Carrel "Les Darons" Languedoc Rouge
Top Pick!
91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Languedoc Les Darons is made from 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan that’s mostly from older vines in the Minervois. It saw a touch of whole clusters in the fermenters and is still aging all in concrete tanks. It's deep purple (almost inky) and offers a sensational perfume of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, ground pepper, and earth. Deep, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and long, it shows the purity and sexiness of the 2017 vintage and is going to be a killer value." (06/2019) 90 points Robert Park...

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, the 2017 Terrasses du Larzac Hissez O is still aging in 400-liter barrels (roughly one-third new). The oak influence isn't hugely obvious, as the concentrated fruit shines brightly here, offering up delicate floral notes and bold blueberries on the nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, the generous fruit is joined by hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings, framed by gentle tannins, which turn silky on the long, licorice-tinged finish. (09/2019) K&L Notes: Coralie Onde was from a winemaking family but opted to start her own project independent of her family estate, Domaine les Ondines. 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Réserve is largely in the same ballpark and has terrific notes of blackberries, smoked earth, garrigue, and pepper. It’s based on 80% Grenache and 10% Syrah and Mourvèdre brought up in foudre and cuve tronconique tanks. More concentrated as well as focused, it's medium to full-bodied, has brilliant concentration, ripe, present tannins, and a great finish. It's another awesome wine from this estate." 2017 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the strongest wines in the vintage is the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Vincent Avril. This beauty has everything you could ask for. As with the 2018, the blend is heavily shifted toward Mourvèdre, and it offers a mammoth bouquet of black cherries, graphite, cured meats, Asian spices, and assorted garrigue-like nuances. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, it stays straight and focused on the palate (whereas the 2016 is more expansive and voluptuous), with a stacked mid-palate, ripe, silky tannins, and fabulous length. You’...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A gem of a Côtes Du Rhône, the 2017 Mon Coeur from the Chave family sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as a ripe, perfumed bouquet of black raspberries, garrigue, melted licorice, and ground pepper. This medium to full-bodied, exuberant, undeniably sumptuous 2017 is ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years." (12/2019) 90 points Vinous: "Deep ruby. 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Including more Syrah, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Prestige is 70% Grenache 20% Mourvèdre, and the rest Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties. With thrilling purity of fruit, notes of black raspberries, blackberries, ground pepper, garrigue, and a distinct sense of minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, sweet tannins, a beautifully opulent texture, and a great finish. Domaine de Cabasse was a highly regarded producer making wines from the Rhone villages of Sablet, Gigondas and Seguret. The family decided to sell their property in 2012 but there was one lone family member who didn't want to see it go. Scraping together enough money, Nicolas Haeni was able to buy just the Seguret vineyard and make that the focus of his new project, "Malmont." This remarkable site is very difficult to farm and the vineyard itself is named Malmont meaning "bad mountain." When it was developed as a site under Cabasse's ownership, they ...

96 points James Suckling: "Immediately a sense of darker fruit in this vintage. The nose has closed up a little since tasting in barrel. It has some reserved, sanguine notes and an essence-like, raspberry core. Some stones and chalk here, too. Very long and focused palate. The grenache is singing here. Dense but soft and supple tannins, the product of thick, healthy skins. Best from 2025." (10/2019) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As always, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape sees a small amount of stems, and the blend is 60% Grenache, 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdr...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More closed, yet still loaded with potential, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Reserve offers a tight, reserved bouquet of cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with ample spice box, mineral, and meaty notes developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated, and straight on the palate, it has beautiful depth and richness, yet needs 4-5 years of bottle age." (08/2019) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "...Hints of cedar and vanilla from aging in 20% new demi-muids accent ripe black cherries in this full-bodied,...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Even better (as well as a perfect wine), the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud checks in as a nominal blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was brought up in demi-muids. It reveals a deep purple color as well as heavenly notes of blackberry and currant fruits intermixed with loads of cured meats, spice box, Asian spices, and a distinct loamy soil and minerality. Always more structured and powerful than the Reserve Auguste Favier release (no doubt due to the Mourvèdre component), it hits the palate with ful...

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled, the 2017 Vinsobres Les Hauts De Julien is stunning stuff that offers a Syrah-driven profile that boasts a saturated purple color, notes of black fruits, liquid violets, ground pepper, and grilled meat, full-bodied richness, a layered texture, and a great finish. Savvy readers will snatch this up and it will keep for at least 10-12 years." (08/2019) 94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like the les Cornuds bottling, the 2017 Vinsobres Les Hauts de Julien is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah. It's co-...
