1998 Ledaig 18 Year Old Gordon & Macphail "Connoisseur's Choice" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $130)

The excellent peated expression from the Tobermory distillery is even better when aged for years in high quality casks. Gordon & Macphail's Connoisseur Choice is a vintage expression of the smoky island whisky aged for 18 years in refill sherry hogs head. The salty, intense spirit loves the used sherry and the resulting whisky is one of the finest we've seen from Ledaig under any label. Now consider that the distillery bottlings at 18+ years command well over $150+ in most markets and you'll see what an incredible value this special bottling is. If you'r ...Read More »

1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The excellent Tamdhu distillery is one we've worked with previously, but the spirit itself doesn't make it to the open market too often. The distillery, near the village of Knockando, has wide onion-shaped stills. Couple that with classic wooden washbacks and you've got one of the most reliable malts on the market. Part of why we don't see more of this excellent spirit on the open market is that the blenders do value the quality and consistency so highly. Since Tamdhu's purchase by Ian Macleod (owners of the Chiefton's Brand) in 2011, their revamped dist ...Read More »

1998 Chateau de Vacquié 20 Year Old Unfiltered Haut-Armagnac (750ml)

Easily one of the most picturesque properties in the Gers, Chateau Vacquie has extreme potential thanks to its special terroir and passionate proprietor. There's absolutely nothing typical about Chateau Vacquie or its owner Bruno Compagnon. While the area is not particularly renowned for great brandy, this special domaine has been identified by experts as being of exceptional quality. Most notably Aubert De Villaine, a friend of Bruno's who's personally examined the domaine and declared it be one of the finest in the southwest. Bruno was successful busin ...Read More »

1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

91 points Vinous: "(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring. ( ...Read More »

1998 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

92 points Wine & Spirits: "(No tasting note given.)" (04/2002) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This opaque purple-colored, muscular, full-bodied, classically made St.-Julien displays impressive concentration, chewy, highly-extracted flavors of black fruits, iron, earth, and spicy wood, and a powerful mouth-feel. A pure, uncompromising, traditionally-styled wine, it is to be admired for its authenticity, class, and quality. (RP)" (04/2001) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. 1998 Raymond-Lafon, Sauternes (375ml)

Robert Parker says: "Raymond-Lafon is a name to watch in the Sauternes district, particularly if one is looking for a wine that is close to the brilliance and majestic richness of Yquem for less than one-third the price. This small estate abuts Yquem's vineyard and has an excellent reputation." The estate of Raymond-Lafon fell into neglect, and it was not until 1972 that Pierre Meslier, the manager of Yquem, purchased this vineyard and began to rebuild this wine's once fabulous reputation. With a tiny yield of 9 hectoliters per hectare (even less than Y ...Read More »

1998 M. Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage Rouge

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Chapoutier's Ermitage l'Ermite possesses a transparent character that almost allows the taster to see through the wine's multiple levels. What stands out is the liqueur of granite liquid minerality. The elegant 1998 Ermitage l'Ermite rouge is light, but exquisitely balanced, with subtle notes of smoke and black currants. The flavors unfold gently and gracefully, with nothing overstated. The power is restrained, the tannin is well-integrated, and the acidity is barely noticeable. 1998 Ledaig PX Cask Finish Isle Of Mull Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

"As a naturally rich, smoky malt, Ledaig has an inherent compatibility with Sherry casks. Pedro Ximénex is one of the sweetest of all sherry varietals, and it’s this sticky sweetness which balances the peat on the nose and first taste, whilst setting the dram up for that kick of velvet smoke we love Ledaig for." Kirstie McCallum, Senior Blender 2 long years of finishing in fresh PX casks results in a sweetness that plays perfectly with the rich and smoky nature of 20+ year old Ledaig. 1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

Goes for minutes on the palate. Still very reserved and not giving all it has. Give it much more bottle time to realize its wonderful style. One of the sleepers of the vintage. Prominent acidity keeps it compact and racy, a mouthwatering wine for Nantucket Bay scallops." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 1998 Lafite Rothschild is deep garnet with a hint of brick and gorgeous notions of sandalwood, crème de cassis, smoked meats, black pepper and garrigue with touches of chargrill, dried herbs and mincemeat pie. Medium-bodied, soft and plush on the palate, it has tons of mouth-filling savory and plum preserves flavors and a very long, savory finish. Delicious now, it should keep for 15-20 more years. 1998 Forman Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red-ruby. Very complex aromas of cherry, redcurrant, tobacco, smoke and violet; if the '99 is claret-like, this is a bit more Burgundian on the nose. Sweet and supple; very nicely balanced but possesses less stuffing than the '99. Lovely inner-mouth florals call to mind a wine from Pauillac. The oak tannins are a bit more apparent on the finish, as there less density in the middle palate. But very successful and stylish for this difficult vintage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine still possesses a dense, youthful, plum/garnet color to the rim, with very little lightening. The first vintage for Pavie under Chantal and Gérard Perse, the 1998 is full-bodied, showing lots of cedar wood, forest floor, roasted herbs, black cherry and blackcurrant and new saddle leather. 1998 Gaja "Sperss" Nebbiolo Langhe
Bid on this bottle of 1998 Gaja "Sperss" Nebbiolo Langhe (95RP, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the things I have learned over the years is that you can count on Angelo Gaja to make a strong showing in just about any tasting. Yes, I know, Sperss is not Barolo (a small percentage of Barbera is added), but at its core the wine captures the essence of Serralunga and is as representative of these hillside vineyards as any Barolo. Dark tar, smoke, leather, spices, menthol and black cherries all make an appearance in this muscular, full-throttle wine. While the vast majority of 1998 Barolos can be enjoyed today, the 1998 Sperss could use another few years in the cellar. It isn't a crime to open a bottle today, but this is one of the few 1998s that still has upside potential. Simply put, the 1998 Sperss is a jewel. (AG)" (03/2009)

1998 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz

91 points Robert Parker: "A distinctive Shiraz, the black/purple-colored 1998's (600 cases produced) explosive aromatic bouquet is reminiscent of the Maryland-produced Old Bay spice (used with abundance on the local steamed crabs). The spicy note is accompanied by aromas of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Rich and backward, with fabulous concentration, it will improve significantly with another 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for a minimum of 12-15 years." (02/2000)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (92JG, 91ST). John Gilman: "It had been a few years since I last tasted the 1998 Drouhin Griotte, but the wine is evolving beautifully and is very much showing as I had hoped when first tasting it out of barrel back in 2000. The nose continues to offer up a lovely aromatic blend defined by its transparency down to the soil, as it delivers notes of red and black cherries, a touch of blood orange, a discreet streak of vegetality reminiscent of the 1991s, game and an outstanding base of soil. On the palate the wine remains medium-full, deep and intensely flavored, with cool fruit tones, fine focus and balance, lovely mid-palate depth, fine grip and still a bit of tannin to resolve on the long, complex and classy finish. Still a few years away, the 1998 Drouhin Griotte remains on track to be an extremely complex and refined middleweight at its zenith. (Drink between 2012-2030) 92+" (09/2008)
