1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The excellent Tamdhu distillery is one we've worked with previously, but the spirit itself doesn't make it to the open market too often. The distillery, near the village of Knockando, has wide onion-shaped stills. Couple that with classic wooden washbacks and you've got one of the most reliable malts on the market. Part of why we don't see more of this excellent spirit on the open market is that the blenders do value the quality and consistency so highly. Since Tamdhu's purchase by Ian Macleod (owners of the Chiefton's Brand) in 2011, their revamped dist ...Read More »

1998 Ledaig 18 Year Old Gordon & Macphail "Connoisseur's Choice" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $130) New!
1998 Ledaig 18 Year Old Gordon & Macphail "Connoisseur's Choice" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $130)

The excellent peated expression from the Tobermory distillery is even better when aged for years in high quality casks. Gordon & Macphail's Connoisseur Choice is a vintage expression of the smoky island whisky aged for 18 years in refill sherry hogs head. The salty, intense spirit loves the used sherry and the resulting whisky is one of the finest we've seen from Ledaig under any label. Now consider that the distillery bottlings at 18+ years command well over $150+ in most markets and you'll see what an incredible value this special bottling is. If you'r ...Read More »

1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

91 points Vinous: "(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring. ( ...Read More »

1998 Chateau de Vacquié 20 Year Old Unfiltered Haut-Armagnac (750ml)

Easily one of the most picturesque properties in the Gers, Chateau Vacquie has extreme potential thanks to its special terroir and passionate proprietor. There's absolutely nothing typical about Chateau Vacquie or its owner Bruno Compagnon. While the area is not particularly renowned for great brandy, this special domaine has been identified by experts as being of exceptional quality. Most notably Aubert De Villaine, a friend of Bruno's who's personally examined the domaine and declared it be one of the finest in the southwest. Bruno was successful busin ...Read More »

1998 Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blancs Champagne

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a relatively open vintage, this is a wine that is generous, rounded, full of green fruits, and balanced with a ripe texture. It has weight, but has more to do with sheer pleasure. It could age, maybe over 5 years, but its nutty hints show it is ready to drink. (RV)" (12/2007) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Blanc de Blancs is a gorgeous wine with well-delineated varietal aromas and flavors. From start to finish, this is a wine that exudes refinement and balance. The fruit is sourced from Mesnil, Avize ...Read More »

1998 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

92 points Wine & Spirits: "(No tasting note given.)" (04/2002) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This opaque purple-colored, muscular, full-bodied, classically made St.-Julien displays impressive concentration, chewy, highly-extracted flavors of black fruits, iron, earth, and spicy wood, and a powerful mouth-feel. A pure, uncompromising, traditionally-styled wine, it is to be admired for its authenticity, class, and quality. (RP)" (04/2001) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. 96 points Wine & Spirits: "No tasting note given." (04/2002) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Red-ruby. Deep aromas of cassis, licorice and lead pencil. Deeper than Les Forts but currently rather mute in the middle. Strongly minerally. Offers classic Latour structure and spine. Finishes with sneaky, subtle persistence. (ST) 91+" (05/2001) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Plenty of raspberry, dark chocolate and mint on the nose. Full-bodied, with licorice and sweet tobacco character and a cedar undertone. Outstanding. 1998 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375mL)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe hay, vanilla, and apricot mark the nose; deep orange flavors with cinnamon spice notes and a very smooth mouthfeel are the already promising attributes of this infant. All the right elements are there, and in good balance. " (02/2001) Wine Spectator: "The earthy, waxy flavors slowly give way to the sweet, rich, earthy core of fig and butterscotch flavors. Young and unevolved, it shows promise. (JL)" (12/2001) K&L Notes: Dolce is only produced in those years where the right climatic conditions occur to allow the develo ...Read More »

1998 Quinault l'Enclos, St-Emilion

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Quinault l'Enclos has faded to a pale brick color and gives up mature notes of dried mulberries, raisin cake and prunes with touches of dried roses, star anise, incense, leather and dried mint. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals a wine at its peak or perhaps on the downward slide, depending on your preferred state of "maturity," offering powdery tannins and a lively line of acid to frame the earth and spice-inspired layers, finishing on a lingering aniseed note. (HS)" (11/2000) Vinous: "Good medium ruby. Black fruits, cocoa powder and mint on the slightly reduced nose; shows a port-like grapey quality. 94 points Wine Spectator: "I love the nose on this wine; multidimensional, with flowers, sweet blackberry and citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with superclassy tannins that are polished and very refined. Goes for minutes on the palate. Still very reserved and not giving all it has. Give it much more bottle time to realize its wonderful style. One of the sleepers of the vintage. 1998 Turley "Tofanelli" Napa Valley Zinfandel

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby/garnet-colored, full-bodied 1998 Zinfandel Tofanelli Vineyard (15.9% alcohol) exhibits spice box and berry fruit aromas and flavors, a sweet, luscious texture, soft, low acidity, and gorgeous voluptuousness. Drink it over the next 5-7 years. " (06/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Moderately saturated red-ruby. Aromas of spicy dark berries, menthol and shoe polish. 1998 Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape

It sports a fully mature, amber color (Thierry said it was the "color of the old foudre") to go with classic game, blackberries, figs, spice and dried garrigue. Spicy and ripe...it is an excellent Zinfandel...(RP)" (06/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby-red, with a hint of development at the rim. Pungent aromas of black and green pepper, musky coffee and leather, plus a hint of surmaturite. Offers good sweetness and concentration..." 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Turley's great success is the terrific 1998 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard. Made from one of their oldest vineyards (104-year old vineyard planted in pure sand), whose grapes achieved 15.8% alcohol naturally, it is the finest Duarte yet produced. An explosive nose of black cherry jam ascends from the glass. In the mouth, cherry liqueur notes continue in this full-bodied, super-endowed, luxuriously rich, opulent, fat, juicy Zinfandel. 1998 Forman Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red-ruby. Very complex aromas of cherry, redcurrant, tobacco, smoke and violet; if the '99 is claret-like, this is a bit more Burgundian on the nose. Sweet and supple; very nicely balanced but possesses less stuffing than the '99. Lovely inner-mouth florals call to mind a wine from Pauillac. The oak tannins are a bit more apparent on the finish, as there less density in the middle palate. But very successful and stylish for this difficult vintage. Finishes with soft, slightly dry-edged tannins. (ST)" (05/2001) Wine Spectator: "An earthy, cedary style with moderately ripe cherry, cedar, sage and herb flavors that are well-proportioned, finishing with moderate tannins. 1998 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz

91 points Robert Parker: "A distinctive Shiraz, the black/purple-colored 1998's (600 cases produced) explosive aromatic bouquet is reminiscent of the Maryland-produced Old Bay spice (used with abundance on the local steamed crabs). The spicy note is accompanied by aromas of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Rich and backward, with fabulous concentration, it will improve significantly with another 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for a minimum of 12-15 years." (02/2000)

1998 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

It boasts a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to an expressive bouquet of cassis, minerals, and smoke. This multi-textured, round wine exhibits sweet, well-integrated tannin, a great mid-palate and finish, as well as spectacular purity and palate presence. Consume it now and over the next 15-20 years. 1998 Bourgoin 22 Year Old "Microbarrique" Cognac 375ml

The wonderful micro batch artisanal Cognacs from Bourgoin are some of the most exciting of the new breed of Cognac producer. This special expression was finished in 10-Liter "alligator charred" barrels. The microbarrique's deep char imparts wonderful roundness and exotic flavors. Easy drinking but not at all boring, expect rich aromatics of stone fruit and honey. 1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (5L)

94 points Vinous: "The 1998 Haut Bailly has been a great wine that coincided with the château’s acquisition by the late Bob Wilmers. It has a sublime bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed stone and hints of violet. After twenty years it is still so youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firm tannin at the beginning, plenty of tarry black fruit, well judged acidity and a finish that to be honest, is not a million miles away from the 1998 Haut-Brion in style. You can see this continuing to evolve for another two decades without difficu ...Read More »

They see themselves as revolutionaries in this complex industry, but not in the sense that they're bringing something new or different. Instead, they espouse a return to simpler, more authentic ways of making cognac. To return, reestablish, renew, restore as in our planet's revolution around the sun. 1998 Ledaig PX Cask Finish Isle Of Mull Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

"As a naturally rich, smoky malt, Ledaig has an inherent compatibility with Sherry casks. Pedro Ximénex is one of the sweetest of all sherry varietals, and it’s this sticky sweetness which balances the peat on the nose and first taste, whilst setting the dram up for that kick of velvet smoke we love Ledaig for." Kirstie McCallum, Senior Blender 2 long years of finishing in fresh PX casks results in a sweetness that plays perfectly with the rich and smoky nature of 20+ year old Ledaig. Bid on this bottle of 1998 Tua Rita "Redigaffi" Toscano Rosso (96RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Redigaffi (2,000+ bottles produced) is profound. I do not normally quote dry extract numbers, because taste is more important than the numbers. However, I could not help but notice one of the highest measured dry extract numbers I have ever seen in a wine with the 1998 Redigaffi -- 39 grams per liter! Made from 100% Merlot, aged in 100% new Allier and Troncais French barrels, it is bottled without fining or filtration. This has been a star for Behrens and Hitchcock since they first offered it, and the 1998 appears to be one of the vintage's top efforts. Opaque black/purple-colored, with a knock-out bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, and smoky new oak, this intense, full-bodied, surprisingly powerful offering, from a vineyard near the Araujo's Eisele parcel, is long and atypically rich and concentrated. This small estate abuts Yquem's vineyard and has an excellent reputation." The estate of Raymond-Lafon fell into neglect, and it was not until 1972 that Pierre Meslier, the manager of Yquem, purchased this vineyard and began to rebuild this wine's once fabulous reputation.
