1998 Haut Franquet, Moulis

We discovered this wine on our 2017 Bordeaux trip and it has finally arrived. A neighbor of Poujeaux, I must admit i have never seen the property, but what they did in 1998 is commendable. Some 1998 left bank wines are a bit coarse and tough-this, like the Poujeaux, is elegant and fruit driven. Perfect hamburger wine.

1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1998 Tamdhu 20 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single First Fill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The excellent Tamdhu distillery is one we've worked with previously, but the spirit itself doesn't make it to the open market too often. The distillery, near the village of Knockando, has wide onion-shaped stills. Couple that with classic wooden washbacks and you've got one of the most reliable malts on the market. Part of why we don't see more of this excellent spirit on the open market is that the blenders do value the quality and consistency so highly. Since Tamdhu's purchase by Ian Macleod (owners of the Chiefton's Brand) in 2011, their revamped dist ...Read More »

1998 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

92 points Wine & Spirits: "(No tasting note given.)" (04/2002) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This opaque purple-colored, muscular, full-bodied, classically made St.-Julien displays impressive concentration, chewy, highly-extracted flavors of black fruits, iron, earth, and spicy wood, and a powerful mouth-feel. A pure, uncompromising, traditionally-styled wine, it is to be admired for its authenticity, class, and quality. (RP)" (04/2001) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. 1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac Top Pick!
1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

91 points Vinous: "(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring. ( ...Read More »

1998 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was bottled in late June, has turned out even better that I thought last year. It boasts a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to an expressive bouquet of cassis, minerals, and smoke. This multi-textured, round wine exhibits sweet, well-integrated tannin, a great mid-palate and finish, as well as spectacular purity and palate presence. 1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "A big, rich wine with huge amounts of fruit oozing out of the glass. Great concentration and intensity, with licorice flavors from the Mourvèdre, finishing with chewy tannins. A great year for this wine, which should age well for 15 to 20 years." (12/2001) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Very youthful, with a juicy blast of red plum and fig fruit flavors on a racy frame, this also has plenty of spice, tar, plum cake and mineral in reserve, as the finish shows more structure and slowly darkens with time in the glass. 1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan

94 points Wine Spectator: "I love the nose on this wine; multidimensional, with flowers, sweet blackberry and citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with superclassy tannins that are polished and very refined. Goes for minutes on the palate. Still very reserved and not giving all it has. Give it much more bottle time to realize its wonderful style. One of the sleepers of the vintage. (JS, Web-2009)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1998 Haut-Bailly is a wine that exploits what was a fine vintage in Pessac-Léognan, and appears to ...Read More »

1998 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (5L)

94 points Vinous: "The 1998 Haut Bailly has been a great wine that coincided with the château’s acquisition by the late Bob Wilmers. It has a sublime bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, crushed stone and hints of violet. After twenty years it is still so youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly firm tannin at the beginning, plenty of tarry black fruit, well judged acidity and a finish that to be honest, is not a million miles away from the 1998 Haut-Brion in style. You can see this continuing to evolve for another two decades without difficu ...Read More »

Full-bodied, with peppery fruit and mineral on the palate, big, young tannins and a long, long finish. Ultrarich. Re-mortgage for this one. (JS)" (09/2004) Jancis Robinson: "Maturing concentrated ruby. Brooding and quite drawn back with a hint of oak. Intense palate with layers and layers of cherry and Mon Chéri cherry chocolates. 1998 Clos l'Eglise, Pomerol

The dazzlingly explosive aromatic display is followed by a creamy-textured, medium to full-bodied, beautifully-layered wine with no hard edges. A supple texture leads to a finish with notes of caramel and spice that lingers for over 40 seconds. This is a gorgeous, complex Pomerol. (10/2000) 91 points Robert Parker: "The 1998 Solengo is a terrific offering. An intriguing blend aged in 100% new French oak for 16 months prior to bottling, it boasts an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a classic black currant and blackberry-scented bouquet infused with high quality, toasty oak, and elements of roasted espresso. 1998 Araujo "Eisele Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard was bottled earlier than usual as this vintage is not as massive or concentrated as its predecessors. To my palate, the 1998 is good, although I am not convinced it will be long lived. There are 2,300 cases of this 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit-Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc blend. Best in decades. Best after 2008." (01/2001) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This might have a chance of hitting a magical outstanding score, as the wine still seems to be holding back much of its potential. 1998 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz

91 points Robert Parker: "A distinctive Shiraz, the black/purple-colored 1998's (600 cases produced) explosive aromatic bouquet is reminiscent of the Maryland-produced Old Bay spice (used with abundance on the local steamed crabs). The spicy note is accompanied by aromas of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Rich and backward, with fabulous concentration, it will improve significantly with another 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for a minimum of 12-15 years." (02/2000)

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, the Merlot quite expressive here and imparting a seductive smooth texture. Bid on this bottle of 1998 Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru (96ST, 95VN, 94BH, 94JG). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated red-ruby. Essence of crushed red raspberry on the nose, complicated by blood orange, rose petal, cocoa powder and nutmeg: I think I could identify this as Musigny in a wind storm. Texture of liquid velvet but with superb grip: high-pitched but fleshy, serious but not austere, and endless on the back end. A wine with great fruit, finesse and style. Can't get this stuff off my palate, but why would I want to? This Musigny should be spectacular in eight to ten years, but it not impossible to taste right now. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (95JG, 91ST, 90BH). John Gilman: "The 1998 Dujac Clos de la Roche gets my vote as one of the wines of the vintage. It is a complete, elegant and intensely flavored wine that delivers outstanding complexity, breed and dimension in a suave, perfectly balanced format. The nose is pure and perfumed, offering up notes of sweet plums, dark berries, cloves, nutmeg, plenty of soil tones, milk chocolate, developing notes of the forest floor to come, a fine framing of vanillin oak and a topnote redolent of violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, aristocratic, deep and seamless, with a beautiful core of tangy fruit, outstanding fruit/acid balance, and great length and grip on the moderately tannic, palate-staining finish. This gets my vote as the best Dujac wine in a very, very strong lineup of 1998s. (Drink between 2006-2030) 95+" (02/2004)

1998 DRC Domaine de la Romanée Conti La Tâche Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1998 DRC Domaine de la Romanée Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (95BH, 93ST, 93W&S). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Like all of the '98 DRC reds, the clarity is a bit cloudy and not limpid though it does not seem to affect the purity of the aromas that now display some subtle secondary hints on the stunning nose of ripe red and black fruits, oriental spices, tea and leather notes. There is superb intensity to the dense, serious and strikingly complex flavors that are underpinned by ripe tannins and huge length on the balanced, mouth coating and impressively long finish. The personality here is muscular and bold with the ripe acidity framing the flavors and wonderfully focused finale. It's worth pointing out that while this is still on the way up, I was pleasantly surprised at how approachable the '98 LT was even though there is more development potential to realize. Multiple and consistent notes. Drink from 2018+." (04/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 1998 Domaine Arlaud Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. Domaine Arlaud was created in 1942 with the marriage of Joseph Arlaud, a man from Ardèche, and Renée Amiot, a woman from a family with deep roots in the Burgundian wine culture. It's still a family owned and run winery. From the winery: "The Morey Saint Denis from the estates is shaped to be elegant. The wines are tender and delicate. While other wine from the A.C. (Agricultural Cooperative) can demonstrate more tannins." The family’s quarter-acre of vines, running from the bottom of the slope to the top, feed from limestone and red clay, with a portion on white clay.
