1997 Hector Macbeth (Glenfiddich) 21 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1997 Hector Macbeth (Glenfiddich) 21 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

There's just no way to describe the feeling of coming across a splendid old cask of Wardhead (trade name for teaspooned Glenfiddich) like this one. You'd expect with the incredible value that these casks offer we'd see more of this type of whisky on the market, but I think suppliers are scared to work with something labelled as a blended malt whisky even when they know it's actually only blended on paper. This magical cask bottled as "Hector Macbeth" was actually distilled at the famous Glenfiddich distillery in Spring of 1997. It was filled into a used ...Read More »

1997 Macduff 21 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The lovely Macduff Distillery -sold locally under the Glen Deveron label- is one of those tragic cases of great malt lost behind the blends. The owners don't spend much time making a fuss of the little distillery, which was built in 1958. Not much of the whisky is sold as malt and mostly it's marketed in France. The distillery located in Banffshire was a crucial element in the popular William Lawson Blend, but recently the owners have revitalized the Glen Deveron brand with a posh new look and some expensive age stated offerings. Despite the great packag ...Read More »

1997 L'Encantada 20 Year Old "Bellair #36" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Independent bottler L'Encantada understands what Armagnac lovers want because that's exactly what they are. This group of Armagnac loving friends realized that some of the region's small estates were throwing away legendary eau-de-vie to blends made by the big négociants. They offered those estates a premium to retain the stocks for bottling as single casks at full strength. Many of these estates had never bottled Armagnac nor had any interested in marketing their precious eau-de-vie. Our friends at L'Encantada realized that the soul of Armagnac exists i ...Read More »

1997 Benrinnes 20 Year Old "Signatory" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

For people who have been following us for a while, you'll remember this special whisky. We've purchased several of these and the 1995 version that's now completely gone. It was always neck and neck with the wonderful 1995 Imperials, which is now 3 times the old price in the warehouse. I was extremely concerned that Signatory would raise the price of this exceptional whisky to unobtainable levels, but after tasting it again from a particularly good cask I knew we had to have this special whisky and keep it reasonable. Benrinnes is one of these unknown Dia ...Read More »

1997 Spring Mountain Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This cuvee of 41,832 bottles possesses a Bordeaux-like austerity, as well as abundant quantities of sweet cassis, cedar, and spice notes in the complex bouquet. The dark ruby color is followed by a dense, concentrated wine with an emphasis on elegance and symmetry as opposed to power and flamboyance. The finish is quite tannic. (RP)" (12/2000) Wine Spectator: "Complex, with smoky oak, ripe sweet black cherry and currant flavors, hints of anise, cedar and spice, sage and mineral. Well focused if drying and austere on the ...Read More »

1997 Suduiraut, Sauternes (Previously $70)

92 points John Gilman: "The 1997 Suduiraut has reached a really lovely plateau in its evolution and is drinking splendidly at age twelve. The bouquet is deep, pure and shows lovely secondary layers of complexity in its mélange of honey, fresh apricot, oranges, crème brulée, soil tones and a gentle framing of buttery oak. With air distinctive notes of clove and marmalade blossomed as well on the nose. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and focused, with a fine core of fruit, lovely, zesty acidity and impressive length and grip on the à point fini ...Read More »

1997 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux

"Malescot has long enjoyed a very favorable reputation, particularly for long lived, traditionally made, firmly styled wines...The well placed vineyards (some of them adjacent to those of Chateau Margaux) now tend to produce medium weight wine that can be compelling because of its combination of elegance and authoritative flavors." 1997 Dow's Vintage Port

95 points Wine Spectator: "Warm and inviting, with a worn leather feel to the mix of dried anise, espresso, bittersweet cocoa, steeped fig and mulled currant notes, which move seamlessly together through the buckwheat-edged finish. There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development.--1997 Vintage Port retrospective (January 2017). Best from 2020 through 2035. 1997 Calera "Mills Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sometimes a young Pinot is deceptive. This wine is young and silky, supple and fruity and has some sharp acidity, but it doesn’t overwhelm. It’s the kind of wine that doesn’t overshadow food. But it’s excellent Pinot. The depth of flavor and long finish suggest aging possibilities, but there’s no reason not to drink and enjoy it now." 1997 Darroze Domaine au Martin Bas Armagnac (750ml)

This small estate outside of Hontanx produces extremely high quality Baco. The nose is ultra rich and decadent. Some dense fruit but bold fresh and dried spices and roasted coffee and toffee flavors. The front is the balance between the mellow and rich, moving toward the roasted dark flavors and a very long spicy finish.

1997 Arietta Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Kongsgaard and his partner, Fritz Hatten (whom readers may know from his association with Christie's auction house), produce the wine called Arietta. In 1997, production was about 450 cases. Beethoven was blaring from speakers situated throughout the winery as I tasted this wine. Kongsgaard says the Arietta may have a Beethoven label, but it is Wagnerian in style. A blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. Its dark ruby/purple/garnet color is followed by copious quantities of briery, berry fruit intermixed with loamy soil, underbrush, and spicy notes. Full-bodied and chewy, with excellent ripeness, this tasty, fleshy, full-throttle Zinfandel should drink well for 5-7 years." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1997 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia (94JH, 94RP, 93VN, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022. (RP)" (10/2002)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1997 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 94WS, 93CG, 91VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 1997 is just short of perfection from this great vintage in Napa Valley. A spectacular wine, it was the first made by Rosemary Cakebread. Production was quite high, as the new plantings started to fully produce, with 4,800+ cases declared. This is wine that fills the olfactory senses with gorgeous ripeness, blueberries, black raspberries, blackberries and cassis, while spring flowers and a touch of oak still lingers in the aromatics. When the wine hits the palate, the extraordinary intensity, purity and multi-dimensional complexity all seem to converge with a cascade of fruit, glycerin and richness. Like most Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignons, it is only 13.8% alcohol. This is a magnificent wine, a young adolescent in the scheme of its potentially fascinating evolution and should have a good 25-3

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness, there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and fruit intensity, and stunning purity. 1997 Turley "Aida" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

90-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard (from 80-year old vines) assaults the palate with such an overload of fruit, tannin, and extract that the taster's first impression is that this is something more than table wine. It is a massive, almost uncivilized, wildly out of control Petite Syrah that will require 10-15 years of cellaring, and last for 30 or more. Production is 3,300 cases, and the wine tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. Earthier on the nose than I recall: wild strawberry, raspberry ad mulberry with just a touch of undergrowth. The palate is animally on the entry, a little rustic, but it coalesces with aeration. 1997 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (3L)
Bid on this 3L-bottle of 1997 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (3L) (100RP, 97WS, 95WE, 94ST). It is a perfect expression of Napa viticulture and wine that should continue to age effortlessly for two decades or more. (RP)" (11/2013)

1997 Turley "Dogtown" Lodi Zinfandel Back In Stock!
1997 Turley "Dogtown" Lodi Zinfandel

89-91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Zinfandel Dogtown (15.3% alcohol) is from a 65-year old vineyard situated on the border of Amador. Its dark ruby/purple/garnet color is followed by copious quantities of briery, berry fruit intermixed with loamy soil, underbrush, and spicy notes. Full-bodied and chewy, with excellent ripeness, this tasty, fleshy, full-throttle Zinfandel should drink well for 5-7 years. As I have stated many times in the past, Turley Cellars' offerings have become the reference point for Zinfandel, as they are the most ...Read More »

1997 Pedroncelli "Three Vineyards" Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
1997 Pedroncelli "Three Vineyards" Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Spectator: "Firm and dense, with black cherry and mineral flavors. Tannins are large on the finish and need time to resolve. " (10/1999) K&L Notes: Wine is in the blood of the Petroncelli family, dating back to selling grapes to home winemakers during Prohibition. After nine decades, they've mastered the art of Bordeaux blends, Zinfandels, and refreshing whites. The Three Vineyards is a blend of estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, with lively redcurrant aromas and a hint of spice.
