94-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This bright, dark ruby-colored wine is exceptional. Its enticing nose reveals extraordinarily refined aromas of a myriad of flowers soaked in cherries, blueberries and traces of sweet mocha. This oily-textured, full-bodied, perfectly harmonious, and compellingly delineated wine could not be any more elegant. It possesses awesome depth, concentration, and purity in its violet and cherry cream pie-flavored personality. Moreover, its formidably long finish displays a strong yet satiny backbone. I predict it will ...

Wine Spectator: "Elegant and refined, with a pretty core of spicy plum, black cherry and currant, picking up smoky, toasty oak nuances, finishing with a lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot." (10/1998) K&L Notes: Oroppas, which comprises some of the winery's top vineyard lots, has been a successful part of St. Clement's portfolio since the 1991 vintage.

92 points Wine Spectator: "This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant, mint and spices. Full-bodied, soft and velvety, with a fruit finish. Starting to drink well now. (JS, Web Only-2007)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastille...

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Sappy, superripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice and mint; shows an almost medicinal austerity. Thick and ripe but quite closed, even musclebound, today, and dominated by its rather tough spine. A more classic Laurel Glen vintage, with a very firm Bordeaux-like structure. Finishes with tougher tannins and late notes of bitter cherry and espresso. Likely to be long-lived. 92(+?) points" (06/1999) Wine Spectator: "Tight and intense, with a firm, concentrated band of currant, anise...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. (RP)" (04/1999) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's Inte...

Wine Spectator: "An enjoyable wine, without pretension. Berry character, and dried-herb undertone. Medium-bodied, with velvety tannins and a pleasant, fruity aftertaste. (JS)" (01/1999)

1996 Cain "Five" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Back In Stock!
91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Complex aromas of cassis, plum, black pepper, black olive and leather. Plush, pliant and seamless yet quite firm, with youthful flavors of cassis, plum and leather. Dense and solidly structured, with sound acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins and noteworthy persistence. (ST)" (06/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This proprietary red wine is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. A complex nose of cedar, black fruits, tobacco...

Wine Spectator: "Starts out tight, with a lean, cedary band of cherry and currant, but then the flavors open up, turning more supple and revealing more depth and complexity." (12/1999)

1996 Moët & Chandon "Cuvée Dom Pérignon" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The brilliant 1996 Dom Perignon, which has largely disappeared from the marketplace, may be the finest young example of DP I have ever tasted. Notes of crushed rocks, honeysuckle, lemon oil, orange marmalade, and white pear provide a stunning aromatic display as well as palate impression. Great acidity and huge flavor intensity backed up by vibrant acidity make this an exquisite Champagne. It should drink well for 20-25 years, possibly longer. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drink...

Robert Parker said of this wine: "This is another immensely impressive wine emanating from the Pisoni Vineyard in the Santa Lucia highlands. Given the high quality of all the Pisoni Pinot Noirs made by many different producers (Ojai, Peter Michael, Siduri, etc.), it appears I need to visit this vineyard on a future trip. There is no doubting the serious fruit coming out of this source. The color is a dark ruby/purple, and the nose offers up loamy soil scents intermixed with gobs of black cherry/plum-like fruit notes. The wine displays medium to full body...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clark Claudon's 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dark purple color, followed by a classic, Bordeaux-like nose of cassis, lead pencil, and smoky new oak. A wine of considerable complexity and elegance, with outstanding purity, richness, and nicely integrated wood and tannin, this is a classic, backward yet promising, symmetrical Cabernet that can be drunk early in life, or cellared for 15+ years. Impressive! (RP)" (08/1999)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very bright ruby-red. Superripe, sappy aromas of black raspberry, cassis, black cherry, chocolate, mint and minerals. Great sweetness and almost painful flavor intensity in the mouth; utterly primary yet lush and accessible. This is still a baby but is already compelling. Has fruit of steel. Finishes with superb, subtle persistence and firm but fine tannins that spread out over the entire palate. " (11/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense plum-colored 1996 Reserva exhibits an o...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive. Dark purple in color, with lots of pretty plum, floral and berry aromas. Full-bodied, with very racy tannins and a long, long, fruity finish. Reserved, it needs time. (JS)" (02/1999) Jancis Robinson: "Putty/linseed on the nose and very sweet, round and rich. Flattering, lovely, smoky, exciting! Dense. Very, very good! Long, concentrated, explosive. 18.5/20 points (JR)" (07/2009) K&L Notes: Quinta do Vesuvio maintains the traditional method of treading grapes in granite "lagares," with to 50 people locking arms a...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Expressive, pungent aromas of roasted black raspberry and dark chocolate, with floral, menthol and spice notes. A major mouthful of suave, generous, but sharply defined fruit; thoroughly ripe, sweet dark berry, chocolate and game flavors coat the entire palate. A complex minerally quality emerged with aeration. Very concentrated and very long; finishes with firm but ripe and even tannins. Try this wine alongside a flight of top California Cabs. (ST) 93+" (11/1999) 90 points Robe...

A full-bodied, deep and complex wine that's similar to their classic '94 Isosceles. Justin Winery is a family owned and operated winery making estate grown wines since 1982. Robert Parker… 'Justin Vineyards and Winery is quickly taking its place among the top producers of California red wines. Owner Justin Baldwin owns a 65-acre vineyard west of the town of Paso Robles dedicated largely to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay… Paso Robles remains an obscure California viticultural region, but if this region's other wineries begin...

89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full ruby-red. Plum, raspberry jam, blackberry liqueur, and spicy, smoky oak on the nose; slightly syrupy in the style of the vintage. Plump and soft in the middle, but given shape by a slight edge of acidity..." According to the Wine Spectator: "...herb, chocolate, bell pepper and currant flavors, this turns supple and polished, finishes with a leathery currant flavor. Best from 2000 through 2007. 700 cases made." (09/99)

91 points Wine Spectator: "Dark, rich and seductive, with a pretty core of earthy cherry, currant and plum flavors, picking up traces of herb and sage on the finish. Wonderful sense of balance and finesse." (10/1999) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full ruby. Cassis, shoe polish and menthol on the nose. Supple and full; offers a more layered texture and more complexity than the cabernet franc. Still, in a rather soft style but with guts. Finishes with good length and more thoroughly buffered tannins." (06/1999)

1996 Conterno Fantino "Sori Ginestra" Barolo
Back In Stock!
93 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of blackberry, plum and Indian spices. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a lovely velvety finish. Fabulous.--1996 Piedmont retrospective. Best after 2007. (JS, Web-2007)" 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The ruby/purple-colored, mineral-dominated 1996 Barolo Sori Ginestra offers spicy oak in the nose, as well as attractive black cherry fruit intertwined with prunes, and toasty oak. With moderate levels of glycerin, full body, high tannin, excellent purity as well as superb richness and extract, this layere...

Wine Spectator: "This offers pure black cherry, cassis and currant on the nose and is sweet and ripe on the palate. Rich and well-balanced, with a touch of coffee bean and cedar that fold in on the palate. The finish is smooth, with just the right amount of tannins.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective. –JL (Web Only - 2007)"

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine is dark ruby-colored and offers a nose of extraordinary purity, depth and richness. Scents of gravel, earth, violets, perfume, jammy blueberries, cassis liqueur, black cherries, and hints of road tar are followed by a velvety-textured, full-bodied, and magnificently concentrated wine. Candied cherries, stones, rosemary, spicy oak, Asian spices, and hints of chocolate can be found in this blockbuster's powerful yet graceful flavor profile and substantial finish. Armed with virtually perfect balance an...

88-90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very good deep red. Red cherry, raspberry, oak spice, toffee, sweet butter and a hint of raisin on the nose. Silky and fruity, with lovely sweetness and firm supporting acidity, but rather closed at present. Finishes with fine but firm tannins and bright, lingering cherry flavor. Perhaps less expressive today than the '97 but more penetrating. This is developing nicely." (06/1998) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Medium ruby-garnet color. Aromas of sweet basil and other fresh herbs, with plum underton...

95 points Vinous: "A head-turning beauty, the 1996 Dom Ruinart Rosé boasts gorgeous, resonant fruit to match its considerable structure and intensity. Although quite pretty and expressive, the 1996 has enough balance to develop gracefully in bottle for years to come. (AG)" (10/2014) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* Pale pink in color, this is stylish rosé. It has the intense acidity of the 1996 vintage, meaning that it still tastes young, crisp, vibrant. The only suggestion that this is 14 years old is in the slight toastiness. But it sho...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Delivers plenty of ripe, complex black cherry, currant, berry and mineral flavors and frames them with sage, cedary oak and spicy nuances. A complex and compelling style that's rich and lively, with a long, complex aftertaste. Best from 2000 through 2007. 912 cases made." (10/98)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The single vineyard red wine, the 1996 Marlstone Vineyard, an 8,000 case blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 10% Malbec. Dark ruby-colored and medium-bodied, with notes of black cherries, spicy new oak, leather, and earth, it is an elegantly-styled wine to drink over the next 10-12 years. (RP)" (12/2000) Wine Spectator: "Elegant and complex, with ripe, supple plum, currant, herb and berry, framed by soft tannins and herbal notes. (JL)" (02/2000) K&L Notes: Delicious Bordeaux-style blend from powerhouse C...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Firm, rich and complex, with concentrated plum, black cherry and blackberry, balanced with toasty oak and minerally tannins. Best from 2002 through 2010." (10/2000)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated dark ruby color. Penetrating, pungent aromas of blackcurrant, flowers, coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco and black pepper; distinct note of crystallized but not cooked fruit. Lush and thick in the mouth, but black fruit flavor is quite penetrating thanks to strong acids. This is the estate's flagship wine, from vines replanted in 1991. Very impressive. (ST) 91+" (09/1998) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine exhibits a Medoc-like personality, with notes of black currants, che...

91 points from Tanzer: "Healthy pale color. Ethereal, highly complex nose combines floral and herbal scents with notes of pineapple, marzipan, mint and spicy oak. Moderately viscous, sweet and shapely; concentrated and fresh. Like the '97, this is silky and suave. The very long, ripe finish hints at honey and caramel." (Aug/98)
Price: $29.99

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Why can't wines such as this be made in 15,000-20,000 case quantities? This is a limited production (about 100 cases) cuvee produced exclusively for the American importer. A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, and aged 18 months in small barrels, of which 45% were new, it is a superb, explosively rich, opaque purple-colored wine with a knock-out nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with floral notes, toast, anise, and dried herbs. Full-bodied and marvelously concentrated, with well-integrated acidity and tannin...

Enticing aromas of raspberry, plum, nutty oak and game; offers a Burgundian tang. Lush, silky and layered; has the intensity and concentration to wear its acids and tannins gr...

(JL)" (11/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense plum/purple-colored 1996 Profile Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of Merryvale's finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) boasts a persistent sweet, ripe blackberry, prune, and licorice-scented nose. With full body, an opulent texture, a chewy, fleshy personality, and adequate underlying acid...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The opaque-colored, slightly internationally styled 1996 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations exhibits toasty new oak and plenty of black currant fruit. The wine is surprisingly powerful and structured for a 1996, as well as dense and backward. This intense, impressively-endowed Chateauneuf needs several years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2012. (RP)" (02/1999) Wine Spectator: "Fairly racy, but also shows vanilla, mocha, smoke and toasty accents. Dark-colored, extracted, with supple tannins and plenty of ...

Full mouthfeel and medium-to-full tannins on the moderately long finish." (03/2000) K&L Notes: This wine from the owners’ namesake vineyard in Rutherford Bench is a big rich and supple cab with ripe black cherry and dark raspberry fruit in mouthwatering concentrations without moving into ‘overblown’ or unbalanced characteristics.
