It has such purity and power yet it's reserved and beautiful. It's one of the best Calons ever. I drank a bottle with some friends in Manhattan last week and it was the wine of the evening. It was full-bodied with silky tannins and a focused and intense finish. Lots of currant and berry character and hints of dried spices. Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream between two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. As friends, they decided to make a go of winemaking together in a two-car garage on River Road. Fruit for the Riverblock Vineyard was sourced from young vines in the Rochioli vineyard, closest to the river.

Lovely aromatic nose combines redcurrant, underbrush, dried flowers, tobacco and woodsmoke; essence of Barbaresco perfume. Silky and expressive, with less sheer sweetness than the '96 Santo Stefano but very good structure, particularly considering that this wine features a high percentage of the rose clone. Lovely developing flavors suggest that this wine will begin to drink well with another two or three years of bottle aging. Finishes with dusty, slightly hard tannins. (ST)" (11/1998)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just as dark as the Clos Vougeot, but even more prodigiously concentrated, the Richebourg is among the blackest and inkiest (both in color and taste) Pinot Noirs I have tasted. Exhibiting sweet Asian spices and grilled black fruits on the nose, this behemoth is a rich, chewy, rugged, silky-textured wine packed with super-ripe, highly-concentrated ripe berries.
