1991 John McCrae (Balvenie) 26 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1991 John McCrae (Balvenie) 26 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

We've discussed the practice of "teaspooning" at K&L several times before and it's critically important to understanding just how special this cask of whisky is. There are some producers who freely sell or trade their single malt and are happy to have their name used in the sale of that whisky. But there are also producers who carefully guard their name, as is their prerogative, but who still end up selling or trading whisky with the independent bottler market. To guard their distillery name, they "teaspoon" casks before selling them. This is simply the ...Read More »

1991 Invergordon 26 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) Top Pick!
1991 Invergordon 26 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)

Invergordon is a grain distillery situated north of Inverness on the Cormarty Firth. They've specialized in production of grain whisky for blends, but like so many things in whisky, with a little time comes greatness. We've snagged this cask of 26 year old grain whisky to showcase just how complex single grain can be on its own. It is the kind of dram you can come back to over and over again and pick apart the intricacies that only two and a half decades in cask can provide. Think of this like over-proofed, over-aged bourbon, but for under $100 bucks and ...Read More »

1991 Cameronbridge 26 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)

This is a sister cask to our huge hit with the 25 year old Cameronrbridge earlier in the year. The only difference is it comes in a year older this time. Cameronbridge is one of Diageo's workhorse grain whisky distilleries, creating the backbone for its world famous brands like Johnnie Walker and White Horse, while simultaneously serving as the home for grain neutral products like Tanqueray and Pimm's. The dual purpose site is one of the biggest producers of spirit in the UK and because of that volume we can secure incredible pricing on very old whisky. ...Read More »

1991 Quinta do Noval "Nacional" Vintage Port (Previously $500)

Wine Spectator: "Refined and well crafted. Dark purple, with fresh floral and grapey aromas and flavors. Medium body, medium sweetness and firm tannins. (JS)" (07/1994) K&L Notes: 93 points from Roy Hersh: "1991 Quinta do Noval Nacional - rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique bal ...Read More »

1991 Palmer, Margaux

Decanter: "Overall, I very much liked the nose of this wine, which seemed at first to show just a hint of roasted bell pepper. The April frosts of this vintage challenged many vintners but, as Duroux explained, Palmer's terroir handled that challenge very well. Small quantities of wine, but very good. It seemed to improve in the glass and displayed a real smoothness on the palate. Surprisingly good. Three stars going on four." (01/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Palmer's 1991 is a noteworthy effort. The deep ruby/purple color is followed by aroma ...Read More »

1991 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Opus One's 1991 is a gorgeously rich, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine with a knock-out nose of smoke, cassis, vanilla, and a whiff of herbs and licorice. Full-bodied, with surprisingly supple, concentrated, chocolatey, cassis, and blackcurrant flavors that ooze across the palate, this voluptuously-textured example of Opus One is atypical in a vintage that produced so many backward wines. There is no question the wine possesses plenty of tannin, but it is admirably concealed by the copious quantities of concentrat ...Read More »

1991 Seavey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Historically, this old vineyard can trace its origins to the 1870s... I previously recommended the 1991 (600 cases), and after re-tasting it I am even more impressed with this extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon. It possesses an opaque black/purple color, a huge nose of sweet black fruits (primarily cassis and black-raspberries), full body, exceptional concentration, and well-integrated tannin and acidity. It is a massive, yet pure Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk now but promises to be even better by the turn o ...Read More »

1991 Caymus "Special Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Healthy dark color, wonderful youthful vitality. Rich mocha, chocolate, black cherry and spice flavors, elegant and polished, with softening tannins and dusty, cedary oak adding dimension. Excellent balance." (12/2002) 92 points Vinous: "Bright medium red, showing remarkably little amber at the rim. Mellow nose offers aromas of raspberry, mocha, brown spices and sandalwood. Spicy and reasonably sweet, but with a slight acid edge giving shape to its red berry, spice and cocoa flavors; neither black in its flavor profile nor pa ...Read More »

1991 Contino Reserva Rioja

Jay S Miller writes: "Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (C.V.N.E.) is known colloquially to most Spanish wine drinkers as Cune. The company was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asua brothers and still remains in control of their direct descendants. In the 1920s ownership started Vina Real and in 2004 a new winery was built in Laguardia. In 1973 Contino was created to further the concept of the single estate winery and has since been one of the principal leaders in the resurrection of the nearly extinct Graciano grape. The Contino wines are made exclusi ...Read More »

1991 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1991 marked the last vintage with Tony Soter and Mia Klein. The year was the most abundant in Spottswoode’s history, producing 5,852 cases of a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc. Interestingly, this was also one of the great early stars in the tasting, showing that high yields can (when conditions are perfect – and they were in 1991, with a long growing season with plenty of sunshine, but no real extreme heat waves). This wine still has a dense, ruby/bluish-purple color, full body, a stunning ...Read More »

1991 Silver Oak "Bonny's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

93 points, ranked #27 on the Top 100 Wine of 1996 and given a 'Cellar Selection' designation by Wine Spectator: "Dark, rich and complex, with tiers of polished currant, cherry, herb, dill and tea flavors. A delicious mouthful of Cabernet that packs in lots of flavor yet manages to remain elegant and not overly tannic. Picks up a complex tarry note on the aftertaste." (09/06) Also received 90 points from Robert Parker: "The 1991 Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (the last release from this single vineyard) reveals a tell-tale bell pepper aroma, rich, c ...Read More »

1991 Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I had a chance to do a mini-vertical of the Etude Cabernet Sauvignons, and all of them performed extremely well. Most of them appeared to need additional cellaring, and each of them suggested to me that they have another two decades of life. I rated the 1991, 95 (an awesome wine). As insiders know, these wines are the handcrafted products of one of California's most influential and successful winemakers/consultants, Tony Soter. Soter has a superb list of clients, including Araujo Estate, Dalla Valle, and Viader. ...Read More »

1991 Pichon Lalande, Pauillac

Jancis Robinson: "45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot. Very small vintage (20-25% of the usual crop) due to the hard frost 21 Apr. Serious frost damage to new shoots. Slightly bricky rim but garnet core. Fresh and cedary but less fragrant than the 1996. A little sappy and nutty. Touch of undergrowth on the nose and comes through more on the palate. Dry, fine tannins, fully resolved and sweet. Some sweetness of undergrowth and red fruit. Just enough fruit to be in balance now but I wouldn't keep it much longer. Good fo ...Read More »

1991 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points John Gilman: "The 1991 vintage has long been touted as one of the great recent vintages for Cabernet Sauvignon, and this is certainly evident in the '91 Martha's Vineyard. The nose is deep, ripe and absolutely classic in its aromatic mélange of red and black cherries, mint, tobacco, a touch of chocolate, lovely soil tones and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate the wines is deep, full-bodied, pure and quite powerful in style, with a great core of pure fruit, a lovely signature of soil, ripe tannins and impeccable balance on the very, very ...Read More »

1991 Groth "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (scuffed label)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Racy, curious, yet highly individualized style. Strong herbaceous streak, but there are currant, mint, black cherry and bell pepper flavors that are long, complex and concentrated on the finish. (JL, Web-2002)" K&L Notes: The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that make up Groth's Oakville Cabernet blend are grown on estate vineyards grown in the Oakville AVA, in the heart of the Napa Valley.

1991 Gentaz-Dervieux "Côte Brune Cuvée Réservée" Côte-Rôtie
Bid on this bottle of 1991 Gentaz-Dervieux "Côte Brune Cuvée Réservée" Côte-Rôtie (97JG, 94ST, 94VN, 90RP). John Gilman: "I still have a few bottles of the 1991 Gentaz Côte Brune in my cellar and I will not be planning on opening a bottle for at least another five to ten years, as this is a remarkably young wine still at age twenty-two! The young and beautifully complex nose soars from the glass in a magical mélange of cassis, black pepper, smoked meats, stony soil tones, black raspberries and a smoky topnote redolent of bonfires. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a very stony signature of soil, firm, ripe tannins and a very, very long, poised and youthful finish that still shows just a bit of its youthful stemminess. This will ultimately be one of the greatest vintages ever produced by Monsieur Gentaz in his long career, but I would definitely keep it tucked away in the cellar for several more years to come, as there are layers and layers of

Extremely long, with mouthwatering acidity acting like a perfect set of backup singers, staying buried deep on the finish to augment and push the flavors and aromas gently. Bid on this bottle of 1991 Domaine Ponsot "Clos de la Roche" Vieilles Vignes (97RP, 96BH, 94JG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ponsot's 1991 Clos de la Roche-Vieilles Vignes (55-year old vines that produced 1/2 ton per hectare) is a mind-boggling wine that rivals virtually anything produced in Burgundy over the last several decades. It offers an amazingly sweet bouquet redolent with aromas of crushed black-raspberries, black-cherries, and underlying earthy, truffle-like notes. Awesomely rich, dense, and full-bodied, this spectacular low acid, multidimensional wine has a blockbuster finish. While drinkable now, it should age effortlessly. (RP)" (12/1993)
