96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 reveals layer upon layer of honeyed pineapple-and orange-scented and -flavored fruit, vibrant acidity, high levels of botrytis, and a fabulously long, yet well-focused finish. It is a great wine. (RP)" (12/1997) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Youthful yellow color, with aromas of sliced lemons, lemon tart, and tropical fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with medium sweetness and a lively fruity finish. Lots of dried fruit and spicy botrytis character. Refined and balanced. (JS, Web Only-2009)" Jancis Robinson...

95 points Wine Spectator: "Out of this world. A triumph. Not very dark in color, but shows loads of smoky tobacco, grilled meat and ripe fruit. Full-bodied, with huge, ripe, velvety tannins and a finish that goes on for minutes. Seductive wine. -- Piedmont retrospective." (12/2000) 93 points Vinous: "Giacosa's 1988 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano is a wine famously plagued by huge amounts of bottle variation, but this was as good an example as I have ever tasted. The next wine was one of Giacosa's all-time masterpieces, but a rare wine few have had th...

93 points James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish. Not very dense. This pales compared with the other top Pauillacs. I never thought this was a perfect win...

96 points Vinous: "The 1988 Monfortino is a real stunner. From bottle, I have never truly loved the 1988, but from magnum, well, it is another story. Fresh, translucent and vibrant on the palate, the 1988 has a classic sense of structure that borrows elements from the 1970 and 1987. Tasted again at the end of the dinner, the 1988 is in a great place now. Tasted from magnum. (AG)" (05/2014) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1988 Barolo Riserva Monfortino—Burnished dense ruby. The 1988 offers classic evolved aromas of spices, chocolate, animal, a...

Decanter: "Lots of fruit on the palate, very good acidity and balance. Has a real sheen. (18) " (01/1997) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The backward 1988 Pavie is a structured, tannic wine, balanced nicely by elegant, ripe, tobacco and black cherry-scented fruit, good acidity, and a long, spicy, tannic finish. (RP)" (02/1993) Vinous: "The 1988 Pavie is a vintage I have met a couple of times before, this predating Gérard Perse’s acquisition in 1997. It has an attractive old school nose of light black fruit, roof tiles and cedar; a little diffuse but...

1988 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Back In Stock!
92 points John Gilman: "1988 is a vintage of good, but hardly remarkable ripeness, and in the context of all the other stellar vintages in this decade in Bordeaux, it stands out a bit stylistically. However, at least with the Pichon-Lalande, the 1988 is hardly a weak link and the wine is outstanding in its very classical styling and proportions. The bouquet offers up a lovely, cool fruit blend of cassis, dark berries, menthol, tobacco leaf, gravel, cigar smoke and a judicious foundation of toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and impec...

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Mosel (90WS). Wine Spectator: "No note given. " (09/1989)
Starting Bid: $85.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Le Gallais (Egon Müller) Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese Mosel (94JG). John Gilman: "The ’88 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese from Le Gallais is a fully mature, fresh and beautiful bottle of wine from this extremely underrated vintage. The bouquet is deep, complex and compelling, as it soars from the glass in a mélange of pear, yellow plum, lime, a gentle base of slate, notes of petrol and a lovely topnote of lime blossom. On the palate the wine is medium-full, round and silky, with lovely brilliance and focus, and outstanding length on the complex and classy finish. Great juice in that classic, understated and very refined style that is the hallmark of this bottling. " (03/2007)
Starting Bid: $500.00

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (93JS, 92WS). James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015)
Starting Bid: $660.00

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese (95JG). John Gilman: "The 1988 vintage is one of my absolute favorites for current drinking, as the wines have aged beautifully and the vast majority of the higher Prädikat level bottlings are just now beginning to reach their apogees of drinkability. The AP #27 Auslese was not an auction bottling in 1988, and this is a brilliant example of the vintage, but one I would be inclined to give another few years in the cellar to allow it to fully peak. The bouquet offers up a beautiful mélange of lime zest, orange, a great base of complex, slate-derived soil tones, candied violets, honeycomb and gentle, blossoming notes of petrol. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and tensile, with a lovely core of fruit, great purity and focus and stunning length and grip on the utterly complete finish. A great bottle of wine with decades and decades of life ahead of it." (06/2009)
Starting Bid: $360.00

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (96WS, 93JG, 92RP). Wine Spectator: "What a beautiful and complete wine, with dark chocolate, crushed blackberry, cedar and raspberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a beautiful licorice, tar and fruit aftertaste. Long and complex. Will improve with age. (JS, Web Only-2009)"
Starting Bid: $375.00

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (94WS, 92RP). Wine Spectator: "Aromas of iodine, pipe tobacco and red fruits follow through to a full body, with soft and silky tannins and intense flavors of tar, berry, and licorice. Beautiful texture too. Long and seductive. Really excellent. (JS, Web-2009)"
Starting Bid: $82.00
