1978 Palacios "Glorioso" Reserva 4o Año Rioja

Palacios is one of the lesser known names for older bottlings of Rioja, though of course many are familiar with Alvaro Palacios and his similarly named bodega, Palacios Remondo, for their very good modern day bottlings. This cuarto año bottling refers to the fact that this sees three years of barrel ageing, and is released in its fourth year and it hails from the very solid 1978 vintage, one of the decade's best.

1978 Mount Eden Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Mount Eden Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon . Jeb Dunnuck provides an overview: "Located on the warmer, eastern/northern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mount Eden Vineyards is one of the most historic estates in California. In addition, their wines have one of the longest track records in the region for aging beautifully. Originally planted in 1945, the estate covers roughly 40 acres today and Jeffrey Patterson makes the wines. Under their Mount Eden label, they release three Chardonnays, a single Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Their Domaine Eden label is focused on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a vineyard lying just to the south of the estate, and also includes Bordeaux varieties from throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains."

1978 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Margaux, Margaux (93RP, 89WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Chateau Margaux is a significant wine for two reasons: that is was the first under the Mentzelopoulos family after acquiring the property and also, it was their best wine in many years. Today it is still going strong. Clear in color, it has quite a deep garnet core. The nose is very seductive with black fruit, leather, scorched earth, a hint of lavender all beautifully defined and quintessentially Margaux. The medium-bodied palate has exquisite balance, the acidity nicely judged, still a little masculine and 'solid' compared to the subsequent vintages under Paul Pontallier, yet fresh and vital. Sure, there is a grittiness and a touch of rusticity towards the finish, but all in all, this represents a great 1978 Left Bank and a signpost that the First Growth was back on the right track after a dismal run of vintages during the 1970s. Tasted May 2016. (NM)" (10/2016)

Of the 1978 Conn Creek "Lot 1" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon,John Gilman writes: "The 1978 Conn Creek “Lot One” cabernet sauvignon is really a lovely example of the vintage that is drinking very well at age thirty-five, but still has a bit of backend tannin and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The deep, pure and complex nose wafts from the glass in a fine blend of black cherries, cassis, cigar smoke, a nice touch of eucalyptus, a beautifully complex base of Rutherford Bench soil tones and incipient notes of the chipotle peppers to come with further bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with beautiful balance and delineation, a superb core, good acids and still a bit of backend tann

1978 Diamond Creek "Lake Vineyard" Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Diamond Creek "Lake Vineyard" Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (97WS). Wine Spectator: "An extraordinary wine, atypical for Diamond Creek with its lush, rich, fleshy texture and opulent fruit. Still young and vibrant, with complex currant, anise, plum and cherry flavors, this remains my favorite of the many Diamond Creek Cabernets.--1978 California Cabernet retrospective. (JL)" (11/1998)

1978 William Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1978 William Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (92RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This winery's debut release is also its best wine to date. The nose, which is subdued, has not been as beaten up by sterile filtration as some of the more recent vintages. Spicy, with vividly pure cassis aromas, this rich, concentrated, generously endowed wine is big and highly extracted. While not yet fully mature, it is quite enjoyable to drink. (RP)" (04/1992)
